Look at my beautiful Shush Sisters

Though they spend most of their time in their sheltered winter quarters, if the weather is nice, The Shush Sisters still come out each day for a walk. Sheila has dressed up for her outing and put a bow tie on her tail!! friday-007

No,  it is TonTon behind her.  Though Ton appears to be wearing a brown top hat so this shot just gets worse and worse. friday-002

Both Charlotte and Sheila are growing up into very nice looking piggies.  For those of you who are new, these are Hereford Pigs  Charlotte has the white face and sticky uppy ears. Sheila has brown smudges on her droopy ears.  Charlotte is in more shots than Sheila because Sheila is almost always walking right at my heel like a well trained dog. I need to call the swine herd and make an appointment for Charlotte with the Boar. Not a very delicate thought is it.(?)  Does a rhetorical question have a question mark?friday-004

Minty is also difficult to get a shot of as she is almost always standing on the other side of me, at her own heel. friday-013

And what have we here. (?) A chook escaping back INto the chook house. Which of you chickens was playing with a ball inside, even though we have talked about this before and who broke a window? I will have to fix that tomorrow.  Two more eggs today! Joy. friday-017

The Daily View.

Good morning everyone. Today is shopping day so The Matriarch and I will take her big jeep into town and fill it with  supplies for the next few weeks.  We always start at the feed store and finish at the grocery store. The list is long.  Not my favourite way to spend a day as you know but it is not as cold this morning and most of the ice has melted off the roads, so it is a good idea to just get it over and done with.

Have a lovely day. And if you are in Aussie I hope you find somewhere cool for the next week or so. The temperatures there sound scorching.

Six years ago I relocated from my job in the film industry in London to the Midwest USA. Together my husband and I are developing our property into a small sustainable farm. We are passionate about good clean food and healthy animals and healthy land. Being frugal, and bucking the consumer trend sounds scary but is actually fun. It is simple. And we really love our simple life. It is a good life.

  1. It is hot and we are not in the hot zones!!

  2. Wonderful little tour today, C…Those Shush Sisters sure have grown!
Temperatures are moderating here, too. The ice should be gone in a day or two, with any luck.
Happy (?) Shopping, and watch out for black ice!

I am crazy about your pigs and yes another heat wave….

    • cecilia says:

Australia gets so hot and is designed to burn, almost all those trees need extreme heat for the seeds to germinate, though the theory makes no sense to me, burn all the bush so new bush can grow.. I need to have a chat with the designer about that idea. There are houses and people in the way now!. Hopefully it is not for too too long. try to stay cool.. silly thing to say i know.. c

  4. I adore coming here to look at your pictures. ADORE.

  5. Kristy says:

Good luck shopping today. That’s our plan for tomorrow. Never fun and particularly less so in the cold. The Daily View looks especially pretty today. Very crisp. You can feel the cold through the pic.

  6. vivinfrance says:

Can’t wait to see what you’ll do with new piglets in the Spring! Tonton is a consummate actor!

  7. Think of it as calling a dating service?

  8. Loving the piggies in the snow! Glorious

  9. terry1954 says:

I agree, shopping for needs is not my cup of tea, but it has to be done

  10. Love that chook. It looks fresh indeed over there. Keep warm, Celi and your menagerie!

  11. Karen says:

Ahh, it looks like everyone is enjoying being out and about in the sunshine.

  12. grammomsblog says:

“get it over and done with” – my sediments exactly!

  13. Loved the tour today. The sisters are huge! We are headed into “town” as well, to run errands and get some shopping done. Have a lovely day! :)

  14. Equus says:

    They ARE beautiful .

  15. garybuie01 says:

How come Sheila isn’t getting a chance at a romantic interlude with the boar? Those girls really look bonnie against the snow!

  16. Nanster says:

The sun is right on the spot where the blue crumply car was !

Those shush sisters have a special place on the farmy ..

  17. Mad Dog says:

Great Shush picture and 2 eggs!

  18. sonsothunder says:

    They are a beautiful pair…
Now that you mentioned…visiting the Boar, I think I know why my childhood memories of what papa, and the other men called a “Breeding”, don’t include the presence of a “Woman” around…of course, Papa, nor the other farmers watching seemed squeamish at all…
Had I raised any question…they would probably have answered something similar to the answer they always gave to someone who said…Eeeewww, how can you stand the smell of those pigs everyday?
“Smells Like Money To Me” they’d retort…without even as much as a hint of humor in their voice.
    ~Happy New Year~

  19. I grow more fond of pigs, the more I see of them. Our daughter keeps her pony, for the moment, with some others at a nearby smallholding. They have a pair of Gloucester Old Spots there that are as charming and seductive as your two Hereford girls:).

  20. Leanne says:

    TWO eggs WHOOP WHOOP

  21. I love feed stores! Especially in the winter.Enjoy the day

  22. They´re looking gorgeous and hurrah for the 100% increase in egg production ;)

  23. Knock, knock.. Smidge here.. Charlotte and Sheila look so endearing.. and I love how they traipse around with you.. Your skiff of snow is similar to ours here in BC today. We’ve a view of a lake, though:) xx

  24. belocchio says:

A wintery day for The Farmy. How I love to visit. To admire the lovely Shush sisters. Share the excitement of two more eggs, and look over Celi’s shoulder as she writes her long, long shopping list. Have a most excellent week-end Celi. Hugs V.

  25. sorrygnat says:

Sheila has a wisp of Nureyev in her delicate lifting of what I assume to be a hefty paw – she must feel that tiny black bow and her sturdy tail curling around it in love; oh the wonder of points of view! adored the post; sorry for the heat in Australia, have 2 young women friends in Adelaid, and my best friend, their mom and her husband, moving there in the future. Best to all

  26. I know how you detest shopping, so I hope it is not too painful. You really ought to show us your town sometime. I would like to see what surrounds the Farmy.

Also, that chook in the window image is such a great shot with those jolts of red in an otherwise colorless scene. Excellent work.

  27. Misky says:

My mum always said, ‘Let’s fly this coop” so the photo with the chooks made me smile. Good morning, c.

  28. TasteFood says:

    What a gleaming day.

  29. The Piggy sisters are beautiful!

  30. colonialist says:

The grandkids would simply love your furry/hairy/feathery friends! I don’t think they would like the temperature, though. Although today it was a little chilly for swimming after a late coldish front. (Still shirtsleeves and bare feet with open window at 22h47, though!)

  31. Juliet says:

The daily view is looking very picturesque these days. Love the Shush sisters out for a walk, and the discovery of another egg! Have a good shopping trip. At least you can do it all in one day, and you have company.

  32. I agree with Juliet, the daily view is just gorgeous today. Just seeing it is cooling – and it is bloody hot here today! xx

  33. ChgoJohn says:

The sight of you walking about the farmy with Minty on one side and Sheila the other must be something to see — and seeing it with my mind’s eye gave me a chuckle. Lucky TonTon isn’t the jealous type.
I’m reaching the point where a trip to a grocery store will be needed soon. I avoid them on the weekends and will venture out Monday or Tuesday. It will be nice to get out a bit.
I hope you had a successful day at the markets. Have a good evening & night, Celi.

  34. Eha says:

Two more eggs and a very contented animal family and the darn shopping will be over by the time you read our posts: love the fact that feed has to come first! Actually the burning of the land IS necessary here in Oz to regenerate life, but us humans have gotten in the way of nature! I’m in a cool zone: just on 40 C yesterday, better today and from tomorrow anything is in the cards! So far comparatively lucky: no known loss of life, about 100 houses gone, 5000 people evacuated, 1000 by boats > Hobart [all this in Tasmania]. Twenty fairly contained fires in NSW, a couple of biggies in Victoria & SA – all lucky, as today’s temps inland not above 44 -45 C [38 C = 100 F]. Actually would love to be walking with the Shush Sisters on that itty-bitty snow :) !

  35. pattisj says:

I guess no one tattled, or is that cackled, as to who was playing ball and broke the window.

  36. nruit says:

It’s all relative, isn’t it! Love your Shush sisters. That’s how we loved our 2 piggie girls this past year. Good luck with the romantic interlude!

  37. barb19 says:

Your snowy pictures look so tempting and cooling – we are sitting on 31 today in the Land Down Under, heading for high 30′s by the middle of next week. Can I come and stay with you? I would love to cool down in some of your snow – the Shush sisters seem to be enjoying it very much.
Good luck with your shopping trip.

  38. Great photo of the Shush sisters! And TonTon!

  39. Is there anyone out there who loves to shop, especially for groceries? Not me. So once you put your order in, can they deliver your farmy needs? Just wondering? That would be awesome. Take care, BAM

    • cecilia says:

If they would deliver groceries out here I would be ALL OVER IT!! That would be like the bestest thing in the world for me.. especially if they carry them into the kitchen. in fact if I had a van I would start a business but that would kind of defeat the purpose wouldn’t it! morning bam.. c

  40. Rhetorical question is easier for me verbally. Let’s google the question mark.
We catch a ferry to do our major shopping. Personally, I love it. If it includes the feed store and food co-op and I’m not rushed by bored cohorts or pressed to catch the next ferry back.
Best of luck with Charlotte’s ‘servicing’. The girls look strong and hearty by the way. Not that I know a stitch about raising pigs- but from a layperson – they are big and plump looking but still agile. That seems like a good thing. Maybe I should take my own advice. (?)

  41. What a cool image to have captured! I think they do need question marks, I always use them, doesn’t anyone else? ;)
