He likes to Kiss them.

When we were walking we stopped to listen to the rustle of the dried winter grasses and investigated tracks in the snow, and peeped into empty nests and ran up and down the pathways through the wild grass.

On the way back even Minty crept up for a cuddle.

Bless our sheep for welcoming the children to the Farmy. Good sheep. kids-and-cows-032

Isn’t it wonderful how our horizons can change. And our lives expand just with a nod and a smile.  Saying Yes.

Good morning. I am glad we went for our Nature Walk yesterday because this morning we have freezing drizzle. So it will be inside playtime this today and we all know who will come out of her box for that!

You all have a lovely day.

PS. I was making wooly mattresses for the dogs this time last year.  Though this year Mama’s fleece was saved and spun. Hopefully very soon I shall take it all over to a loom and begin to make a blanket.  I really must find the time to do that.

I am a New Zealander living in America. For ten years I was a High School Teacher of Drama in New Zealand. Then I travelled to work in Europe. Six years ago I relocated from my job in the film industry in London to the Midwest USA. Together my husband and I are developing our property into a small sustainable farm. We are passionate about good clean food and healthy animals and healthy land. Being frugal, and bucking the consumer trend sounds scary but is actually fun. It is simple. And we really love our simple life. It is a good life.

  1. Hey! That bucket looks familiar…as does the pose!
So wonderful, to share the Farmy with those kids…

Aaww- some sheepies. Lucky children they’ll enjoy these opputunities! Going back to the Bees thought you might like this blog today http://beekeeperlinda.blogspot.c0m/2013/02. Laura

  3. Oh, sweet, sweet, hairy! Those children are never going to forget this experience of the time they’ve spent with you and the animals on the farmy. :)

  4. vivinfrance says:

You do have fun, even while working like a don’t-know-what. I should love a kiss from Hairy McLary as opposed to hairy Jock!

  5. The two sheep in our neighbouring field are very good with the grandchildren. They are suspicious of all humans as they have seen a lot of their chums killed by smiling bipeds. Taking them brioche or croissant seems to remove all their fears, however. Maybe the Silence of Lambs involved more croissants and bread than I ever imagined. Hannibal Levure.

  6. Lynda says:

A lovely day was had by all it seems. So glad for those children, and for you!

  7. The outside of an animal is good for the inside of a person! Have a great day Celi.

  8. I can simply see the exuberance of these children in your images, especially the fourth, my fav.

  9. He does look rather kissable!

  10. jaz says:

such a wonderful experience for the kids and what fun for you and the animals!

  11. ChgoJohn says:

Animals must be able to recognize children much the same way they recognize the young of their own kind. What they do with that knowledge obviously varies but it seems to bring out the best in your sheep. Just look at Hairy! Hard to believe Old Kissy Face is, in reality, the Scourge of many a barn door!
What a mess of a day! I was to head to the Italian market but I think that will wait until tomorrow. We’re lucky though. This storm is going to bring as much as 2 feet of snow as it hits the East Coast. We certainly dodged that bullet! Enjoy your day with your new pupils.

  12. Equus says:

Well I didn’t think I could fall any more in love with Hairy than I have already, but I was wrong, wrong, wrong.

  13. Marmepurl says:

I had been wonering what became of Mama’s lovely spun wool. I am happy to know that it hasn’t been forgotten.

  14. Mad Dog says:

Hairy is a terrible flirt :-)

  15. dayphoto says:

Nothing better than kisses from the sheep! I know, because I was raised with sheep!

It’s wonderful how children can turn a routine day into something to treasure. Thank you for the smile that I’m wearing right now. xx

  17. I love to see the children with the opportunity to love on the animals…and receive in return. My 5-year old granddaughter went to a “local” farm with her Kindergarten this week and the photos my daughter shared of Sophia holding a chick melted my heart. Love was exchanged! I really enjoyed seeing these children experience the farmy, Celi. Debra

  18. Eva Taylor says:

We’re expecting 30-40cm of snow today, I honestly hope it misses us. What lovely sheep for being so nice to the children.

  19. belocchio says:

Sweet photographs of the children and the animals. How fortunate these children are to be able to experience farm life first hand. How fortunate there is a Miss Celi in their life. V

I envy those kiddies being able to wiggle their fingers in all that lovely wool!

  21. EllaDee says:

Hairy is such a lad! You have given these kids (and I dare say many others) something wonderful, memorable which they will keep with them forever… I know this because my farm days loom large despite being many years ago :)

  22. Aaaand…. now my children want a sheep. In particular, a sheep that gives kisses. They’ve been waiting (mostly) patiently for a year, and will have to wait at least one more, before we can go and find the rescue dog who is no doubt also waiting (mostly) patiently to meet us…. We are learning how to be grateful for the smiles in the meantime. Slowly. :-)

  23. Fabulous pictures. And we have news – we’re going to be operating restaurant from a rare breed farm.

  24. Awe, sweet sheep. :)
The photo of all 3 children in the field~precious. …and the light…

  25. pattisj says:

Minty has gotten all grown up! Aw, Hairy is so sweet.

  26. Juliet says:

So sweet to see the kids enjoying the animals.

  27. Eha says:

Your blog this morning has made me feel goosebumpy all over: what a gloriously happy photo of the three kids in the field. And Hairy’s gentle kiss obviously was not repulsed :) ! Lucky, lucky children . . .

  28. Chris says:

These photos of the children and the Farmy lovelies are exquisite! I love the first and the fourth…oh and the one of Hairy giving lil girl a smooch is too precious!! :)

  29. This is one of my favorite posts!

  30. So sweet! All our animals love kids, even adolescents. If only the parents gave them half the break the animals do … ;)

  31. When sheep are acclimated to people contact they can be incredibly winsome. Hairy is king of cuddly! How lovely. :)

  32. How sweet! I think it’s great that kids are comfortable around animals and vice versa. =D

  33. Kristy says:

Miss A is on my lap as I’m reading this one. She said I’ve been to a petting zoo. I explained to her that this wasn’t a zoo, but a real farm. She was quite blown away by that fact. LOL. Mr. N spent his early preschool years in a rural community, so this wouldn’t be new to him. Miss A, however, apparently I need to get her out of the city a bit more. ;)

  34. What a sweetheart is that Hairy MacLairy. He’s all ready for Valentine’s Day!

  35. I am so happy to have found your blog, through Spirit Lights The Way. I wish I could come and live with you.
