BACK ON THE FARM

Back on the farm and everyone is safe and sound.

I had the hay cut by the hay man on Thursday which naturally meant it rained all day yesterday but never mind. It is interesting what does not bother me at the moment.

We all had a good fright in my family and this puts much in perspective. But all is well now and on the mend so we can focus back on the farm once again.

Molly’s piglets are very little but look good. They did not get their iron shots within those first four days so I am watching them carefully. But they seem vigorous enough. I put in more soil and sweet iron and they have all been nibbling at it.

There are indeed eight!

Today I have a few friends come down from Chicago to give me a hand getting everything back in order. There was rain while I was away too and the garden has disappeared into weeds but I think we can recover it. We will pick the monster zucchini and ripe tomatoes and cook and clean and make sense of it all.

Last night I locked both the chickens and the ducks into their respective houses. They have all been loose while I have been gone and the chickens were laying all over the place. The pullets have started laying but nothing from the ducks yet.

It is cool and overcast and wet but the rain is probably finished for now. So the hay will start to dry and the heat will return they say. I don’t care. None of this bothers me now. Things have been brought sharply into perspective.

I can hear the ducks calling.

I hope you have a great day.

  1. Iron shots for piglets? I learn so much reading your blogs. I enjoy your entries yet what I like very is learning little things like this.

  2. Thrilled to see you back, and with good reports. Perspective is quite a gift — a thought that many are reflecting on here as we mark the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Harvey. Family, community, personal friendships and relationships: they all order themselves differently in the face of real challenges.

  3. What a bonus to return to 8 healthy piglets. Mollie is a great mother and so are you! I’m so glad the crisis has been weathered, and I hope you can rein in the wandering chooks.

  4. I’m glad things turned out ok … I’m guessing and that there were no major issues on the farm on your return. The ducks look so ‘grown up’ and the piglets are cute as a button. Welcome home.

  5. Hello, Ceci! Oddly enough, your being away and not sending photos of the farmy gave the rest of us a chance to share in your delight of seeing how much the ducks have grown, how beautiful the little piggies are, and feel the deep, satisfying breath of ‘Home Again’ comfort. Even though there is a lot to do, a change in perspective is a spurt of growth! Enjoy!! Welcome home, and may I say this – we ALL missed you greatly, worried with you about your family, and ran through airline and train terminals with you, in our hearts.

  6. Duck calls are so happy, yet matter-of-fact. Feed me feed me feed me, and hello hello hello!! It’s a wonderful welcome home to hear all of that quacking. Here’s to good weather and great friends to help you whoop things back into order!

  7. I am pleased that the problems got sorted..very pleased.

There is no doubt in my mind that every venture needs the guidance of a good woman.Men try their best but it doesnt quite reach the mark. But then without their help things would have been chaotic…

It is good to have you back again…and bringing those from the windy city with you will soon sort out weeds and feeds

  8. Glad things are more settled with your family, I am so happy to be back on the farm sharing the animals lives through your eyes. Laura

  9. Hi and welcome back. I am glad all is turning out OK. Glad you were able to go and be present with your family in person. I’m also happy to catch up on the farm news. We all missed you and were anxious for the well-being of your NZ family.
