Up in the hills of Sacramento

I have reached SACRAMENTO and have been gently transported to the Big House somewhere  up in the hills.

We did a lot of this yesterday.

But today it is quiet and I will soon crank the big empty kitchen into gear. You will be thrilled to learn that  I  have  joined the masses and am forced to BUY my own food.  No gardens and  freezers and cupboards brimming with home grown food. Now I shall have to go out and shoulder my way up a Californian supermarket aisle and find some food in there.  Yesterday was not a big eating day.  This morning has dawned clear and bright and I am in the mood to make a Monster Mama Salad.

So as soon as one of these sleepy buggers gets their sorry arses out of bed (I am still in a different time zone in my little Paddington Bear Brain.) I shall request a driver and a super market and then we will make a Monster Mama Salad with Omelettes  and caramelised onions for brunch.  Tomorrow is the wedding! So I want everyone well fed and ready for the big day.

The garden here is all trees. Beautiful.

It interests me that so many people do not cook. In fact there is a whole generation of people who do not cook. How they sustain themselves I do not know!  However  the kitchen in this house in the hills is huge and purring quietly, in anticipation of a big wake up!

  1. Love this phrase: “…and shoulder my way up a California supermarket aisle…”
You have a way with words and photos that is poetic and engaging and draws the reader in. I look forward to your remaining Ca. posts.

  2. Sounds like you´ll just have to go with the flow and enjoy a few naughty things and then get back into your lovely routine as soon as you can. Do your children cook?! Have a wonderful wedding celebration with your family!

    • When I get over to my sons house, he is a great cook, and we often work in the kitchen together. This is johns family that I am with now and only The Matriarch and I cook.. c

  3. Have a great time. Glad you’ve experienced what most of us have to suffer (and pay for!) in the way of food shopping. We grow what we can, and I mostly shop in the little village shop and the Saturday market, but once in a while a supermarket stock-up is necessary and I loathe it.

  4. Most days I can cook from the pantry, fridge and freezer. Can’t even imagine going shopping every day, though I used to when I lived in Metropolis! (SoCal)

  5. Paddington Bear Brain – tee hee 😉
Yes, most people these days I’ve found do NOT cook – it’s a strange way to live – like gassing one’s car up with diesel fuel when it’s not a diesel engine you’ve got. We are spoiled here in Hawaii, as we shop what produce we do not grow at the farmer’s market – all local, all organic. Even the meat here is grass fed on the hills above our house.
Hope you have fun while you are there – and that all those folks appreciate your wonderful cooking! I know I would!

    • how bela i have only been to hawaii once and spent most of it sleeping on a beach.. and the food was wonderful ..NZ is like that too,, we can see where our food is growing.. c

  6. Have a nice and enjoyable time dear Cecilia, and Happiness to the new couple too! I can imagine how would be so nice and so delicious foods because you are there. They are so lucky. And as always you captured so nice photographs, Thank you, with my love, nia

  7. It’s not just our children’s generation that doesn’t cook – I can’t tell you how many women our own age have never done anything harder than browning ground beef or grilling a steak…Once, a customer picked up a prime rib she’d ordered, and said,”Now, tell me how to cook this. I have company coming tonight…”
Best wishes to the happy couple!

  8. I didn’t cook for seven years. My husband either did all of the cooking, or I did all of the ordering. Shameful, I know! But then I had kids who needed to eat real food… you know how that goes 🙂 Have a lovely time at the wedding. Congratulations!

  9. Happy that you made the trip safely. You are right, so many people don’t cook anymore. They buy prepared food that they reheat and more often than not go out to eat. Good luck at a supermarket.
