Salsa Verde and the Piggies are Put through their Paces.

Remember these from the garden. Tomatillos.

They hang like little paper lanterns. And inside the little paper lantern a tomato grows. A green tomato. A tomatillo.

So yesterday Our John made Grilled Tomatillo Salsa Verde.

Char grill tomatillo, capsicum (sweet pepper) and  a couple of jalapenos until soft. Smash up. Add onion, lime juice, seasonings and  cilantro. Blend with your wife’s new bright orange stick blender. Add a little stock or in John’s case pear cider from his glass if you need some extra fluid.

We ate this on the verandah with more of the chilled pear cider. And the discussion as we munched was to Cut the Hay or Not To Cut  the Hay! There is a chance of rain and we all know what that means. It will ONLY rain if the precious alfalfa hay is cut! But it has started to flower, so the time has come. Once the skies are clear for 5 days ahead, we will take the risk.

John  told me that his very tasty Grilled Salsa Verde was inspired by the folks over at  Inspired Taste. A site I had never heard of and  am off to visit immediately.

Then yesterday evening I took the Shush Sisters for their walkies. They love their walkies! This is their training time. They are learning to heel. We walk through all the gates and around the property now. I gave my camera to the Tall Teenager after discussing what shots I needed so you could see how their training is coming along.  I call them and talk to them the whole time.  So they follow quite well to a point. Though I laughed when I saw the images. We look like a mad parade! With miss c in her workdress and gumboots labouring under the misconception that she is in charge!! The Tall Teenager is doing well with the camera.  It is time I bought him one of his own. He is starting to really SEE.  And Hereford Pigs are so photogenic.

As usual Sheila is a good pig, Charlotte is the nosy pig and TonTon brings up the rear. Remind me to clean my lens again!!

They are allowed to play in the sheep’s water before going back to bed. Training is hot work.

Good morning. It will be another lovely ordinary day here today.  The temperatures were mild (in the low nineties) all last week and it looks the same again this week. We get so much more done when it is not excessively hot.   No rain yet.  No hay cut yet. Probably tonight.

Have a lovely day.

PS. There are days when I pop a few images of the day on my Face Book page the night before I post.  (Join by pushing LIKE in the FB column on your right).   I pop in there every morning after the milking to visit. And every day I post my favourite image to my Pinterest Boards. (Also over on your right)  If you have a favourite image I don’t mind if you share too. Especially if it will give your friends a laugh. We all need a laugh! c

    • I think watching me carry the camera about and going en pointe when i see a good shot has had an effect on his way of viewing things. Plus he uses his levels well.. he was terrifying me leaping gates and throwing himself on the ground with my only camera in his hand! There were many shots of me yelling be careful with that camera! poor fella.. c

  1. The salsa sounds and looks delicious! Tonight I am making mango margaritas and kumquat salsa (if I can find them) for cocktail hour to celebrate our 21st wedding anniversary and my 44th birthday. Where hast the time gone!?

Love the picture of you in your pretty dress with the pig and dog procession. I think you’re right, I bet the teenager would love a camera of his own!

Have a lovely day ~ April

    • Oh mango margaritas and a birthday and an anniversary! Now that kumquat salsa sounds very interesting.. i shall be interested in the results, now off to the market with you to find us some! Morning April.. c

  2. Good to see you in the pictures! The Tall Teenager did a “fab” job at taking the pictures…I especially love the one where you are walking away and one piggy is following you so graciously and the other piggy has spied tha camera and the Tall Teenager..what a curious sort..and not taking orders well at all! lol

  3. The salsa looks so good my mouth is watering–I could eat it for breakfast! Since I grow but a few peppers, I buy gobs from the farmers market (roasted on site) and freeze them. A refreshing twist–crush and drain watermelon and add it to your salsa–called fire and ice.

  4. Morning Celi! You are so lucky to be in the low 90s there! Today it will be 108 and has been in the 100s for a while and will continue to be, of course with very little or no rain. We are supposed to get some today, but you know how that is, you have to be able to grab on the string, pull really hard and hang on to it for as long as you can! Our Tomatillas have thrived in the heat, and also our okra. Did you plant any of that? I just love it. It’s definitely a southern folks vegetable though.
Do you have commands for you piggies? The first pic looked like you were in charge, but the later ones…..were you or they? 🙂 Our pigs love us, but after the 45 minute racing around the pasture to get them back in last fall, they remain in their very own large area. Have a wonderful day! xo

    • Yes they have a command to come, then one for off you go, which is what they were doing lots of, mostly i call shush shush and after a few calls they will run to me and if i am walking they will follow, if i am standing still they run in for a pat then dart off again. then they have the command to Go Home and I walk with them racing behind or ahead into the barn and through to their pen, once they are in I shut their door. They always have treats in their bowls waiting. I have made sure that Go Home is their favourite command. We have only just started venturing out.. it is a bit scary but so far so good!! the 90’s have been glorious, long may it last i say.. it sounds like missouri is in bad way.. c

  5. hi celi! i grew tomatillos a few years ago and got tons of them. i made the same salsa. those shush sisters are too cute. glad you still have two of them!

    • John has joined the mutiny and wants to keep both,, he finds them amusing! But they have to earn their way so they will take turns being bred I guess.. c

  6. Love the grilled salsa verde! What a lovely idea. Funny, we had salsa verde last night with our grilled steaks. 🙂 I LOVE the piggies! What beautiful pigs and so well trained. I also had a pig named Charlotte, a pig called Josephine and a most cantankerous pig called Lester. I do agree, your teen took some excellent shots of the pigs. A most enjoyable post Celi!

  7. The shush sister are really a wonderful addition to the farmy.
…so glad there are two… Team Shush. I definately think
that Kupa should join the parade.

Fingers, toes and eyes crossed for clear skies for
    the alfalfa harvest…..
    Have a grande day C…

  8. The Tall Teenager did quite a good job as photographer. Love the parade! I don’t imagine the sheep are any too happy after the Shush sisters play in their water. 🙂 Hope you get your hay cut without any problems.

    • you are rigHT Linda, they are not dogs, they respond as much to movement as to voice.. and in their own time and often at top speed.. so we are usually flying by the seat of our pants! c
