The drought is officially over: miss c said

When the basement floods the drought is over. And in this region today there are lots of flooded basements, and flooded fields and minds flooded with possibilities now that it looks like we may have some water around for the summer.

The ducks will be floating in the fields soon … a sight that always makes me smile.

The washing is being hung in the verandah clothes line for the meantime. Although we are not forecast to have any more rain today, there is a bendy tree prediction for today. It looks like one of these towels is almost due for the rag bag! I love old towels so I use them right until they completely fall apart, then they go to the barn as udder rags.

Yesterday I spent most of the day mopping and scooping up water in the basement. One half of the area is serviced by the sump pump, but the other half slopes the wrong way of course. And this is my cellar and laundry of course. Ah well.

So I just keep mopping and scooping to keep the levels manageable. The water will keep leaking in for a while. I don’t mind. At least the floors will be super clean by the time we are finished.

Even though it is still miserable weather the bees are coming home tomorrow. So I will do the last bits of work on the hives. Then spend the rest of the day in and out of the basement.

On this day a year ago Meadow and Minty, seen above in the header with Mama and Mia, were one day old. These are very sweet shots so if you have a moment and feel like a smile, click on the link to the time machine that will take you back a year. Such cute little lambs.

Have a lovely day.

  1. you must be the only person I know who gets pleased when her house is flooded….have a happy day and lots of love

  2. C. those photos of Meadow and Minty as newborns are the sweetest…I especially love the one of Mama looking over at one of them..you can even see the vein in her ear! It looks like the rain gods are giving the earth one final thirsty drink before the warm months set in! Sorry about the basement though but who doesn’t want a clean basement floor? 🙂

  3. Your grass is certainly the beneficiary of all this rain, it’s so green and lush looking. Sorry about the flood, hopefully it will let up — it seems that we are expecting a very wet weekend.

  4. My basement does and is doing exactly the same thing. And it is where we have our laundry and my husband’s office! But the rain is good after so many years of drought. Just thinking of the ducks floating in your field makes me smile, too. 🙂 happy Friday!

  5. Waiting on the rain here, the sky has been black all day, and the wind has started to blow quite strongly, but still no drops. I am hoping it is going to be a evening/night affair and blue skies tomorrow and Sunday. I have soooo much to do in the garden!! Been busy all week doing other peoples gardens, and mine is lagging behind. The peas I planted 4 weeks ago are not showing, but the peas I planted a week later in a friends garden are up! Guess I will need to plant more. Have a great weekend Celi, hope your basement dries out and you get some rest for a few hours!!

    • I do hope you get a lovely warm weekend, we might not but I know it is coming, maybe you can spend some time in your lovely glasshouse otherwise.. c

  6. I think our drought must be over too.. we ‘ve had a few days of showers and some heavy ones, which have cheered things up, and makes us believe in rain again. We’ve even got some neighbours who were showering once a week, and swimming in-between instead of buying water! we were not driven to that, but I stopped watering much of the garden!
I love old towels… I don’t know what people would do without them…everything from mopping wet dogs, to cleaning the car and everything else…

    • and wiping down new born lambs and drying me, old towels are the best for sopping up moisture.. I hate new towels, hate them, so the matriarch buys the new ones and then passes her old ones to me! perfect! c

  7. That was a lot of rain yesterday! Yes, the drought is over! I washed the basement floor when I got back from the market this morning and that was the end of it for me. Did you see snow this morning? It wasn’t anything at all but, still, it’s just about the last thing you want to see on April 19th. Meadow & Minty a year old? How the time has flown! Have a good evening, Celi!

    • Yes I did see snow!! What was that all about!?.. mercy.. but only tomorrow and then Surely we can start looking towards a warm spring time.. c

  8. If we could only save some of the rain for summer! (we are edging towards drought…rice farmers are worried as they have been told there may not be water for irrigation.)
(Thought about you today as I was writing about bull snot – see, having cows you can identify!)
That towel picture is adorable – it looks like ladies in a chorus line ( ignoring the fact they are a bit over the hill – and cheerily having a good time) Old towels are gold- too many uses to count!
