The Duke of Kupa and TonTon were caught on film herding the guineas through the pens behind the barn. It looks to me as though they are working as a team. What do you think?
Poor guinea fowl. Being herded to and from by those two.
They were being quite vocal in their protest too!
Daisy was much better about the milking by yesterday evening. I think it may be getting close breeding time for her. I will call the vet this week.
Yesterday I began to thoroughly clean out the middle pen. This will be Charlotte’s nursery. It is big and cool. When the roof was delivered a number of the heavy smaller metal sheets and trim came in a very long, very strong open sided box. Naturally I asked the men not to break it when they got the iron out.
And realised yesterday that if I placed it in the Charlotte’s nursery room it would be a perfect little hidey shelf for the little pigs to play under. With a few minor adjustments it will take up one wall of the 13 foot square pen. The piglets are due June 17.
Good morning. I worked in the blueberry patch again yesterday too. I have been amending the soil around the plants with coffee grounds and they are growing well now and a few are even flowering. After close examination it appears that the bushes have been eaten by rabbits sometime in the winter months. So the ground is now covered in a deep mulch, to keep the weeds down (the back gardens always end up with the worst weeds) and the roots cool and I am going to give them cages to keep off the rabbits while the new growth matures.
Today after the chores and the weeding I am going to make an all out effort to visit as many of you as I can. I do miss my visiting. This is a frantic time of year but I think we are winning. I mowed the dandelion walk yesterday so I am even ahead of the grass which is a rare occurrence. Oh and John helped me finish fence Number Two, so now two of the three big fields are divided. This fence I made with a special electric fence that looks like rope and is SO easy to manage. I am never going back to wire! I hate working with wire!
I hope you all have a lovely day.
your sunburnt friend,celi

Good morning! Looks like Tonton and Kupa are bully-boys! How fun to see their personalities come out. I’m interested in the use of coffee grounds because I did this a few years ago to condition our heavy clay soil, and it attracted every gnat and midge in the UK. Do you have that problem when using coffee grounds?
I always put the tea leaves and coffee grounds around the roses and have not had a gnat problem specifically there, though we do have a lot of bugs anyway so it would be hard for me to tell! I do dig them in with the coffee spoon though if that makes any difference! c
I dig them in with a shovel, which seems more productive … with all respect to your teaspoon. 😉
But I have a teaspoon in my hand, from scraping the bowl!! (Laugh!) I have lost more spoons to gardens than anything else!! c
😀
Good Morning! Gosh am I the first? Probably because I have no pet sitting this morning and it is hammering it down so my poor dogs are not getting their run at the park (they are sulking – but there is a limit to how wet i am prepared to get, plus i can hear thunder). The rain has put a dampener on my to do list this morning. Now I am frantically looking for jobs indoors. Love your pictures of the herders!
Took too long to hit reply and Misky beat me for first place LOL
Misky is fast like that, good to get the rain for you, maybe you will get to go for a walk later when the weather eases up! morning Lyn! c
And you said TonTon wouldn’t herd from behind! Wish I could have wheelbarrow contents for my winter compost pile sigh:) Laura
My compost pile would make you weep then, it is like a small hill!! Lucky me! c
Good morning Celi ; that’s quite the picture movie . you can almost see them working their moves on the guinea’s . is daisy any more vocal than normal? she could be in season. milk drop? kicky?
well have a blessed day. try to stay out of the sun or cover yourself if you have to !mike
when she is in season she is a proper nuisance, noisy, the lot. and yes I am wearing a shirt today, I got caught out on the mower yesterday and was too lazy to stop and put on long sleeves! c
who knew that peacocks herded? kupa could be in the rodeo! the piggies look so cute sleeping in their straw. i can’t wait for the babies!
Now we all have to cross our fingers that it is not too hot when she goes into labour.. she is already puffing and it is not even hot yet! morning jaz! c
A fan will help keep her cool! Morning, Celi!
Hmm, I have one on hand.. at the moment they are in the breeze under the tree..
Does your heart good to see a team in action…I think that we all understand just how busy you are and that you do not have time to reply to all comments…that is ok…I just love to read your post..you go on doing those and I will not have any problem with you not replying or reading my blog….Love to you all xxxx
I’m impressed that Kupa has become a working farm dog – perhaps he can be trained to keep his harem away from the grapes 😉
Those pigs look very sweet!
Blueberries like acidic soil? Good to know. I’ll put some coffee grounds around mine, too. One of them died, so I need to find it a cross-pollinating companion soon.
From cold soggy Viv to sunburnt Celie…..envious thoughts – not just for the sun, but for the beautiful writing you give us every day. And as for those pictures…my favourite is puss in basket. Thank you.
I’ve seen peacock herding before… but then I just thought the male was just trying to get over friendly with the guinea’s.. interesting…
Just love how Ton Ton and The Duke are herding the guineas! Dolly, our Blue Heeler does it every time we go out to feed, morning and night…..well, if fact anytime she is in the farmyard. We also shout “NO” OR “UN UN’ and she stops, but then starts again. She rarely full-on chases them, but that does happen occasionally, and we are still trying to figure out how to stop that! All suggestions welcome!!! I know herding is in her blood, but…….. would rather she didn’t herd the birds! xo
Ton does it too, guineas are made for herding dogs because they flock I suppose, he never herds chickens or peacocks, just guineas and i always tell him to stop and he always does until i am around the corner, the only way i can stop it is put him on heel, or down and stay..it is a naughty habit.. c
Cinders, the herders working together is just too funny! You should try to video them and turn it into Americas funniest home vids! I think you would win millions!! 🙂 I love that photo of Daisy…you could almost reach out and touch her…does she ever let you give her any love…I could just hug her head!! Actually I loved all the photos today…oh and Charlotte and Shelia so comfy in their nice straw bed…no two happier pigs!!
daisy will lower her head for scratch between her ears, it is her favourite scratching spot..morning chris..c
It DOES look like teamwork! Unanticipated cooperation is always a pleasant surprise! You went from freezing to sunburn, and it appears that life is in full buzz on the farmy! Lovely, Celi!
Daisy is really a beautiful cow. Just beautiful! How do the pigs clean themselves after a mud bath? Do you hose them down?
Yup, I hose them every day to cool them off actually, charlotte just loves it, she is a shower girl!! sheila tolerates it then wanders off.. c
Could I have the barrow of manure and straw please? It would be perfect on my allotment, nice and rich, lots of humus 🙂
