And then there were four.

The two piggies I have sold were loaded Into the Stock Trailer without any problems and young Red Hat Matt and his lovely wife came to collect them.  I feel much heartened after meeting her because these pigs have been raised by a woman and are used to the constant chat from a woman’s voice as they are being fed and led about.  She will do just fine. Though I had to stop myself calling later in the afternoon to see if they had got their two new piggies installed OK.  I have become a worrisome mother.

So now there are  four.  A much more manageable number. and-then-there-were-Four-00

They were locked up so they did not chase their brother and sister down the drive. Though Ton did and had to be retrieved. He was very agitated, after all he had been guarding these piggies since they were born. Some one was stealing them!

But he has other babies to guard.

And some who are not so young either.

The bobble headed owls, I have named them Bobble and Squeak,  are shifted about the gardens every day and are doing a grand job of keeping the birds at bay.  Plus they are kind of comforting to carry about though I am not sure why.  Comfort can be found in odd places. and-then-there-were-Four-03

The hay baler is still waiting, but that’s OK I am good  at waiting. Today we should be baling. Most of yesterday everything stood absolutely still in dripping mist but today is dawning clear. It looks good.

I hope you all have a lovely day.

  1. sounds like your piglets will have a fine new life. I so hope things go your way with the hay today. Re the home grown food audit. How about crackers to go with dips etc, do you make your own?

    • Poor old Ton, he feels such responsibility for the animals, it is interesting that he taken on a ‘watching’ role, guarding them. Though i am not sure what he would do if four slavering coyotes came in out of the corn. Or a racoon wanting to eat the chickens, maybe they have and he chased them off without me noticing! how is your garden, have you had rain? i shall pop over and see.. c..

  2. ” Plus they are kind of comforting to carry about though I am not sure why” -lol…too funny….your animals are so beautiful, we have rescue dogs , and no room for any others–the joy you must feel every day to take care of your animal family:-)

      • I agree and they are since it was my middle daughter that kept bringing them home. Now she is moved out and has her own home with rescue dogs. She is much better with them than we are( my husband and I).
Our two older dogs were from shelters( huskie, lab mixes), but the younger two were pit bulls that we got as puppies and were not from good homes. The shelter would not take them locally, so she rescued them and brought them home under her coat-lol. I had heard all the awful stories , but raising them they are the most friendly dog, comical, loving, and hardworking. It is how people treat them-:-)

  3. Poor Ton, losing two of his charges like that…In Sweet Cleo’s younger, noisier days, I used to have to remind her every week that the Garbage Man was NOT STEALING OUR STUFF. She still ‘woofs’ a little, but only to let me know he’s here…
Best of luck with the hay today. This is the second morning in a row we’ve been awakened at 4 by thunderstorms…

  4. It should be a lovely day to bale hay. Glad your hay man is working for a quality product and not just a check for baling however much he can cram into a day. It is sad to see the little piggies go but you know they are going to a good home. I bet you will get updates soon. It should be a beautiful day for a parade cooler and sunny. So I am off to watch two of my kids in marching band in a Labor Day parade this morning.
Oh meant to tell you I was watching the news on Friday morning and there was a story about a steam engine at the Grand Canyon that is run on recycled cooking oil. I thought of you and your cooking oil car. Do you smell french fries while driving? ;o)

    • A steam engine run on cooking oil, goodness. bet they never though of that when they first made that engine, it was all about the coal then.. If I smelt french fries when I was driving I would never get out! Have a lovely day at your parade… c

  5. Good afternoon, c. Just back from picking 2 kilos of gorgeous blackberries. P is making crumble tonight. And … If you’re seeking out a good rye flatbread recipe for crackers, this one is quite good. It’s Nigel Slater’s recipe, and comes darned close to what we eat in Denmark. It calls for fresh yeast, but I’d just use the dried stuff and reduce the quantity. http://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2010/may/16/nigel-slater-recipes-crispbread

  6. I’m so happy that the piggies went off okay C and definitely sounds like they will be well cared for.
Always so busy on the farmy. I just spent the entire morning in my garden which is fraction of the size and with no animals to care for and I am bushed, plus a few new blisters to show for my efforts – I admire your continual unconditional loving work you do every day on the farmy.
    🙂 Mandy xo

    • Oh I love those, with piles of butter! Then the next day you add a bit of bacon and fry it all up and voila Bubble and Squeak, MY FAVOURITE, I must get out there and dig some more potatoes morning Nancy!.. c

  7. Oh how well I remember that feeling when I had to part with puppies I had bred, but it is always good to know they have gone to a good home. Have been reading a really good site that covers beer, cheese, soap and candle making with really good picture tutorials by an Australian guy living the sustainable life albeit on a much smaller scale than you. http://www.greeiningofgavin.com
Good hay day to all. Laura

  8. you do make me laugh…Bobble and Squeak whatever next….but don’t we love being friends with such a crazy lady down on the Farmy.
Lots of best wishes to Red Hat Matt and may his Farmy grow as well as yours
