Suddenly there is a whole lot of not very much to do.

And I keep panicking!
What have I forgotten I say to myself?

The barn has become a retirement home for chickens. Everywhere I look there are old hens sitting about with their ancient roosters lamenting that all the feed is in barrels with lids. This old hen was having a terrible time in with the layers in the hen house so I scooped her up and popped her under my arm and brought her over to the barn where there is plenty of space to hide from mean chickens.
She had a few recovery days safe in the big dog crate. (A new second hand acquisition that is going to be very useful). Then I opened the door and let her choose.
Now I often find her in with the little pigs. Probably drinking their water and pecking at their left overs – good luck with that I tell her – these piggies leave nothing! Because she is very old and going through an unfortunate molt, in the evenings I pick her up and place her somewhere safe and feed her a handful of grain.
I have time for these things now!

Today is Friday – how did that happen? Friday already.
I was going to write what I was grateful for? And it all got lost in last weeks shuffle. Having Daylight Savings, Halloween and the WTF election all in the same week did my head in.
Well, today I am grateful for dog beds. When you have dog beds you always know where the dogs will be in the night and there is less chance of tripping over them in the dark.
Good morning!
Have a lovely day!

PS We are doing a thing this month where I bring you in on all the offers I have over at SubStack. Bear with me! This blog is the mothership – everything starts here.

Yesterday at Substack I published the PopPops in a TKG TAKE TEN video. All this month the TKG Take Ten, ten minute ambient farm sounds, are FREE to all. (Usually week days are for The Tenners) In December I go to Australia for a few weeks so I want you all to have the opportunity to be topped up on Farmy stuff.
While I am away (in Australia), (leaving next month) the two videos a week will not be Farmy sounds (I will not be on the farm) they will be a new idea I have. Very new. And the Tenners (paid subscribers) are the group who help me devise and extend new things. So join if you are curious and kind. It is only $5 US a month! Or $55 US a year.
New stuff is coming.
Oh and don’t forget the TKG NEWSLETTER comes out at noon on Sunday. The walkabout will feature! Sunday will always be free. Of course!

it’s okay to have the down times of rest, as busy times, both are important
Oh, is that the chicken from the video yesterday? The Pops seemed familiar with her but she was really looking a bit ragged as she wandered the hay piles! The moon picture is gorgeous. I looked out last night (we are in a crescent phase) and after 2 nights of a very sharply detailed moon I found a hazy, spooky one barely visible above the trees. I felt like bats and witches should have been flying past 🙂
Yes! I bet it was her. Though to be honest there are a few raggedy old ladies in there.
A chance for you to have a quiet time! That is wonderful👏🏼
yes! More time to plot!!
A fantastic photograph….it’s always good to have quiet down time…..it makes the busy times that much better…
Yes! There is that!!
Such dear little pigs …and they don’t mind the poor old chicken!
They pay no attention to her. It is very sweet.
Those pigs are a special breed!
Halloween, the time change and the WTF election make quiet and reflective time essential, in my opinion.
Indeed!
Putting the Farmy to bed for the winter is Celi creative time. Not that you’re not creative the rest of the time, but there is the luxury of (more) leisurely thinking, developing and planning.
And talking of dog beds, I have many around the house, but our new dog Liam, has decided that he much prefers to sprawl at full length on the floor next to my bed, on the kitchen floor right behind where I’m working, etc. And his length is considerable, since he is also a greyhound like Higgins. We can provide the beds, but we cannot make the doggos use them…
Oh – you have your new boy! Dogs on the kitchen are a terror!
I
Especially when they are very tall, and in his case, a terror for counter-surfing. Everything is a potential snack!
My gratitude for the day is your time to share kindness toward the old hen. Patti
She really is a sweet old bird!
Wouldn’t a lot of people wish to be that in there later years?
Indeed. She is good at keeping a low profile too. There is another super old chicken in the hen house who I will bring out today – they can both sit together for a few days in the dog crate to form a kind of elder partnership. And put on a little weight.
