I wagged yesterday

No not my tail. I wagged work. I played hookey. I was a truant. Look at that calm shot. The wind was so terrible I had to rest the camera on a fence post to keep it still but you cannot see that wind!

It was so windy and so cold that I regressed. I lit the fire.  I put the yesterday’s dinner party chicken bones on to make stock.  I left the dishes unwashed. I ignored the stalls, the unfinished pigsty and the weeding in Donna’s garden.  I could not hang the laundry out on the line in a gale so I did not even wash it. And with small breaks to feed animals,   move animals and birds (Kupa was once again found on the top of the convertible).  Chase buckets and baskets blown across the fields.  Watering the plants in pots and moving the seedlings where they were not blown to death.  And checking Mama. In between all that and a few other things I just sat on the red couch in front of the fire and I read a book. A whole book.

The wind was fierce all day. Worse than usual. The fields are dry and bare so the wind carries dust and dirt.   Every time I ventured forth my face was sandblasted and my eyes were gritty. Mama kept low to the ground and the chickens never even left the barn.   So when I took the camera and the dogs for a walk I took that one shot,  then I scurried back inside.

I can take the wind for days. There are many of us who work in the wind. I am not the only one. But some days I cannot do it anymore. The bendy tree defeats me.  So I sat in front of the fire and read my book.  The book is called Behind the Beautiful Forevers. By Katherine Boo.  And I read it all.  It was worth taking a day off to read. An extraordinary book. Then I drained the chicken stock, added the chicken back in, a few vegetables and a few noodles, sat it back on the woodstove, and myself back on the couch and did some writing.  Nice.

So there you are. Some days I am lazy!  I am the lazy dog that the quick brown fox jumped over.

Good morning. There is no gale in the forecast today, just a warm breeze with abundant sunshine (weather man words)  and I am rested and ready to deal with things again.

The trouble with wagging a day is that a little fairy does not come out in the night and do all my work for me while I sleep. The work  is all still there.  Waiting for me with big smiles. No problem. Without wind howling about my head I feel like I can do almost anything. And TonTon and I need to get busy on a pen for piglets because the meat piglets are ready for pick up and  feeding up.  Sheila the Babe (the Hereford pig we will train) is not until May.

Right off to work I go. I always feel like picking up my little pail and singing Hi Ho Hi Ho when I write that!!

Good Morning

  1. Good for you! If anyone deserves an occasional day off — besides me, of course — it would be you. And yesterday was a good one to take off. That wind was something! I hope it’s gone now; today is going to be cold enough without it. Have a great day, Celi. Stay warm!

    • I will be wearing my clown pants all day again! But we have had a bit of damage from that frost this morning, we went down to 28 John said, so it may be an iffy fruit bearing year which is deeply dissappointing.. do you get mean frosts that close to the lake? c

      • We’re lucky. The Lake really buffers our weather. This time of year, our daily highs may be a few degrees less than you but our nightly lows are a few degrees warmer. Add to that the heat that the city itself retains and our overnight low remained just above freezing last night and should do the same tonight. I’ve heard that last night’s frost may have damaged the fruit crop, though it’s still too early to tell. I hope the damage isn’t nearly as bad as feared — and the same holds true for your trees and plantings. Y’all need a break!

  2. Doesn’t wagging work give you the energy to get more done the next day? For me it does.. I’m curious about that book.. what’s it about that it was worth reading in one sitting. Sounds like my sort of book and I’m looking for a good read! xo

  3. Oh I haven’t seen the word wagged used like that in AGES. We used call it bunking off as well. You know everyone needs one of THOSE days – sitting reading. I remember bunking off to finish reading the House of Spirits, a pot of tea to hand all day, on the sofa. And I was self-employed (oh the irony). Perfect.

  4. What a delight. A wag day is a necissity sometimes. I have decided that the Duke of Kupa believes the convertible to be his limousine – he is there looking for his chauffeur, who is unforgiveably late.

  5. Everybody needs a day off Celi and your day off still doesn’t sound like a day off when you consider all the seed moving and animal feeding and bucket gathering. I am going to look into that book. Any book you give a high five to seems like it should be darn good. Hope today has less wind in store for you. Good luck with the rest of your week and take care. That fire sounds awfully nice…

  6. I think you need a mini vacation :). But I know you can’t take that now.. but soon :). And the temperature has been up and down here.. can’t wait till its stable.

  7. That had to be SOME wind to get you to forego your appointed rounds! Even when you’re being “lazy” you make chicken stock! I think that itsy-bitsy vacation was probably just what you needed…when the lambs are born, you’ll be in high gear! Reading in front of a fire is the best therapy–physical and mental! Debra

    • yes you are right about the high gear when we get lambies but maybe we will get two lovely fat lambs easily delivered and mama will take over! fingers crossed.. c
