When TonTon got dealt to by a skunk last time…
That smell was nothing to the hideously mind bending stink he tried to bring into the house last night after tangling with the skunk again.
An absolutely gut wrenching smell. It has sucked the air right out of the house. I am afraid to go outside and meet it full on.
I went to bed last night thinking how I would tell about how I made another big jar of Tomato Sauce as thick as puree, and a container of ice cream scented with vanilla pods and a beautiful squeaky fresh cheese. We bottled the last of the wine and pear cider.
But TonTon is lying outside the doors wondering why he had to spend the night outside and I know that I am going to have to use all three of the potions you suggested last time..
.. to try and get this awful pong out of his coat but the whole house smells like skunk. This is very bad. I was wrong last time. That was nothing compared to this. The smell has invaded every corner. It makes me feel sick.
I will have to try and clean him at least once before I go and do the milking. He loves to watch the milking. But the smell of him Through the closed door is already making me gag. Imagine that in the barn! We pick up 100 bales of straw today too. It will be busy and hot. Wish me luck.
I have my rubber gloves ready, I am going in.
Have a stink free day.

A year ago, today. .. We went on a wee tour of the neighbouring farms and there is even a shot of Daisy at 5 days old! Dairy equals Daisy

Oh, Celi. Sorry to hear this. My dog’s have had run-ins with skunks over the years in Michigan. Talk about a bad ride home! Max was sprayed last Spring in my back yard, a “glancing blow”, but that was more than enough. If you find that one of those remedies work, please let us know.
They’ve dropped the hi temp forecast by 5 degrees for tomorrow. I hope they drop it another 5!
Good luck with TonTon and have a great Sunday!
I am with you John, around 90 seems the perfect temp to me after these hot days! c
He must have gotten a strong dose this time. We’ve never had our house skunked — usually if a dog — it’s always a dog — gets hit we give him his tomato juice bath outside. Good luck.
he has a bath outside so that is where all the action was today.. c
when we would travel my kids would smell a dead skunk and ask who was smaoking grass. i would tell them i never smelled grass that smelled like skunks. not that i ever smoked it that much back in the day but if it smelled like skunk i never would have touched it. poor you….what a job! teddy feels compelled to roll in dung from time to time and it is awful!
That is funny .. if it smelled like skunk no-one would go near it!! c
Have been following your wonderful blog for some time without comment. BUT, the skunk issue…well, we had an old lab that forever tangled with those beasts. The last time he cornered it in our garage. So we had stink in vehicles and cars. Poor old dog…we bathed and bathed, remedied with everything but finally had to have her neck and chest shaved to get rid of the worst of it. Start giving a hair cut if you have to…it is like a permanent sponge on their body.
I feel for you soooo much and especially in this heat.
Your photos were delightful today so at least in the stink you can still see the beauty. :o)
Morning Sandra and welcome, i love that you have been reading all this time and a skunk draws you into the comment lounge.. that smell in a car would be worse i think.. terrible..c
here where i live everyone agrees tomato juice is the ultimate skunk smell remover. just bathe him in this
Morning terry, i have lots of tomatoes in the garden so i will get cooking! c
good luck my friend!!!! that is such a nasty perfume those skunks put off, sure would not want to bottle it!!! lol
Yikes!
I wondered before when you said it was an interesting smell. I suspect it mostly missed him before. In small doses, it has been described as being like burnt rubber. One person described it like as being like garlic (thiols) and rotten eggs (sulphuric acid) microwaved inside of a rubber glove. In my experience, the smell is more like that of an animal that has been dead for several days. Here in the suburbs, you get both smells occasionally, and although the skunk smell is distinctive, I find them to be similar.
Sadly, the fact that he didn’t learn the first time is a bad sign. (Check the link: http://lavplourde.tripod.com/skunk/). Skunks go through quite a bit of trouble to warn attackers before releasing their smell. TonTon appears to be quite stubborn.
White vinegar or hydrogen peroxide. They should be more effective than tomatoes.
Lovely photos, for what it’s worth.
There is a certain irony to those shots, beautiful flowers, stinky dog!!! (laughter!).. c
In the future, take shots of things that stink. TonTon will wake you up smelling of roses.
Love the purples and blues of feathers and flowers. And although I have to dig them out, I love thistles. I do not love skunk smell–sorry the morning stinks.
The bees like the thistle flowers too, .. but they are not allowed ion the fields.. c
Nothing worse than skunk smell. My grandfather also said it was a sure cure for plugged sinus!

and a plugged stomach.. horrible .. c
I’m wondering where the picture of Daisy as a baby is–how I missed it. Also, that white flower with red center is I think a Rose of Sharon.
Last I’m sorry for you all –TonTon especially, since he doesn’t seem to know how bad he smells and would like only to sleep inside!
OH.. weird.. it was there, i will look at the page and double check to see if something has gone wrong.. have a lovely sunday.. c
If I can get hold of my daughter today I will ask her for a remedy. She has worked in animal shelters for years and I remember her telling me about a surefire fix for skunk smell.
Here is what my daughter recommends: http://www.jlhweb.net/Boxermap/skunk.html
This remedy seems to be very popular, if i can’t fix it with what i have on hand i will drive to the city and buy some.. c
Years ago when I groomed dogs in Northern Nevada we used Massngill douche powder. We kept jars of it and would mix it up and use it. I don’t know if they even make it anymore, this is how long it has been. It did work.
Hmm, I have not heard of that .. good that it worked.. did people bring in dogs that had been skunked?.. c
Yes we got a lot of skunk dogs. I actually got to the point the smell didn’t even make me blink, lol.
Oh dear heather i hope i don’t get to that stage, it must take a lot of skunk strikes ot get to that !! c
Guess TonTon’s an outside dog for awhile. Great photos.
he most certainly is, which reminds me I had better go and check and make sure he is not up to something! c
heroine of the year – you go where ordinary men and women fear to tread, and with rubber gloves!
I have fancy rubber gloves that come up to my elbow, just the ticket! morning gnat!
Oh, how awful. I ditto the tomato juice remedy, something I remember my dad mentioning many years ago as a treatment. Good luck.
Thank you Audrey.. we will just keep on scrubbing! c
