I was wrong last time. Skunk Stinks.

When TonTon got dealt to by a skunk last time…

That smell was nothing to the hideously mind bending stink he tried to bring into the house last night after tangling with the skunk again.

An absolutely gut wrenching smell.  It has sucked the air right out of the house. I am afraid to go outside and meet it full on.

I went to bed last night thinking how I would tell about how I made another big jar of Tomato Sauce as thick as puree, and a container of ice cream  scented with vanilla pods and a beautiful squeaky fresh cheese. We bottled the last of the wine and pear cider.

But TonTon is lying outside the doors wondering why he had to spend the night outside and I know that I am going to have to use all three of the potions you suggested last time..

.. to try and get this awful pong out of his coat but the whole house smells like skunk. This is very bad.  I was wrong last time. That was nothing compared to this.  The smell has invaded every corner. It makes me feel sick.

I will  have to try and clean him at least once before I go and do the milking.  He loves to watch the milking. But the smell of him Through the closed door is already making me gag. Imagine that in the barn!  We pick up 100 bales of straw today too. It will be busy and hot.   Wish me luck.

I have my rubber gloves ready, I am going in.

Have a stink free day.

A year ago, today. .. We went on a wee tour of the neighbouring farms and there is even a shot of Daisy at 5 days old! Dairy equals Daisy

  1. Ugh skunk stink is something I have never smelt but I’m guessing it is close to unbearable! Air out that house, peg on nose and best of luck my friend!

  2. Oh, poor Ton Ton! And poor YOU! Our acreage dog once got into with a skunk, back in the day. We gave him the tomato juice bath, and it did take the edge off, but not enough of an edge for me. It was summer so we shaved him to the skin and then scrubbed him down with doggie shampoo. It helped 🙂

  3. Beautiful photos, and great linking back to “Dairy = Daisy and the Bees are Swimming”. I love reading your words about independent sustainability, they make me feel it is all possible. The world can & will go back to responsible living. Poor TonTon. Poor you.

  4. Just a thought, dogs have an incredible sense of smell – I guess this is a smell they like. Otherwise it must be driving Ton Ton crazy! He’s intelligent so if he doesn’t like the smell he may have learnt his lesson – but if he actually likes the smell, well I hate to think. Joy

  5. Rather late on the scene! ‘Course that has given me a chance to read ALL about the horror of skunks [as you said before, we do not have them in Oz, but we DO have other undesirables if you live in the country!] and shall post this saga to friends for sure 🙂 ! Now it seems I have landed not only on a fun post but a very practical one!! Do have to try cut lemon next to bed when sniffles strike ! And have plenty of lemongrass growing outside . . . . and has anyone asked Tonton whether he ‘likes’ to smell like THAT? 😀 !

  6. OK – Part 2: – Did send your fun [?] post to a dear friend in S Oregon. He has kind’of trouble with skunks and racoons also. Swears by the following – one part baking soda, one part hydrogen peroxide – dilute it with 10 parts of water. Wash said dog, dry and spray said dog with something called Fabreese! Am laughing aloud at carrying such ‘messages’ but anything to be helpful!!!

  7. Celi, You would think that as smart as dogs are, that they would learn from the first encounter. I hope one of your methods works for you.

My sister-in-law had a family of them move in under her house once. Animal control was called and they were caught fairly quickly, but it took weeks for the smell to go away.

  8. Oh do I know! I am really sorry….because I DO know! I keep saying I must post about the family of skunks who for a time lived under our house…it’s quite a tale…and even our pores emitted the odor for a while. And the taste…I won’t go on, I’ll just repeat. I am so sorry! It’s an experience! Ha! Debra

  9. Oh dear Celia. Poor dog, poor you. We have skunks around the farm and there is absolutely nothing more disgusting to get even a whiff of them. No wonder they put a similar odorant into natural gas. Not sure about the peroxide (blond dog results?), but the farmers around here swear by one part white vinegar and one part water with a few drops of detergent. You need the big gallon jugs of vinegar. Not a beautiful project, but your photographs are more than beautiful. It makes up for it. Virginia
