The invisible pig party

Do you remember that episode of Roseanne? The sitcom. Or was it Rozanne? Years ago, when she appeared in that kitchen door looking like an absolute fright, hair all everywhere and says to John Goodman. “Do you think I’m purty?” What could he say. Daisy is way too young to have seen that but she is thinking it!

Yes Daisy. You are beautiful.

We bottled the last of the pear cider last night and it is good. Evidently the secret to good hard cider is to forget that you have it, then forget to bottle it.

We are reusing Corona bottles.  We crushed the pears back in October.  You can see how we did it here

There is always a little left at the bottom of the flagon. So I mixed this with water.

And took it out to the big pigs. The little ones were deemed too young. They scoffed it, before I could even focus the camera,  then tottered back under the trailer for another wee sleep.   It was a short invisible party.

We don’t often get a picture of The Big Dog.  He seems to have a new lease on life with all the raw milk he is drinking.  The swelling from his  arthritis is visibly reduced and he is much bouncier, even in this incessant heat.

Have a lovely day.

What was happening on this day a year ago. Making cream cheese and chatting about living a sustainable life in the city.

  1. Your look back post “living a sustainable life in the city” is timely for me. I do what I can but am always looking to do more, balancing time, space & money. I’d been feeling my efforts were amounting to little but reading that post, made me see my “chooky steps” have lightened our environmental footprint considerably. Pls tell Daisy I think she’s purty 🙂

  2. Hmmm the smell of ripe pears. I can only imagine how good that cider would be.

As one Kiwi to another, had news filtered through to you on the prairies that the wonderful and talented Margaret Mahy died on July 23rd? I kinda figure you would know her work. She has left us all a rich and deep legacy.

Keep sharing the good farmy news.

  3. Good to see a pic of The Big Dog and to read he’s doing so much better. Dogs can be so stoic and if he’s more active, the ol’ boy is doing pretty good. May that continue. That pear cider sounds pretty good — and potent. A couple snorts and the drinkers go to bed.

  4. OMG, pear cider. I want some! I’ll be reading your crushing technique — I’m just back from a visit to my best friend’s for an art party, an afternoon at the beach and some hanging out time. Now I have to get a blog post up by the end of the day and go out and get the Wednesday vegetables. See you online again soon.
