The Well Worn Path …

… from the house to the barn.

White cat prefers the concrete footpath. Can you see how he has actual cat fur on his paws, in the winter he walks about on four thick little cushions of fur.  He is an Himalayan cat. He and the sheep are the only ones on the farm who are actually designed for brutal cold.  The irony is that he is the inside cat, due to his extreme age.  He keeps reminding me of how old he is too.  He and Big Dog were here when I arrived.

Thing One.

Enjoying the cold sun, we were barely above freezing all day yesterday.

I have finally received my new Kindle, which will be very useful for reading whilst travelling.  Though I still live in fear of them closing our only local bookstore.  It is the only one for hundreds of miles so I shall still frequent it.  Like everyone I cannot do without books. So I won’t. I will keep collecting them.

However the Kindle does not take up too much room and there is no bookstore where I am going in California for three days, plus seven flights  next week so I will need lots of books. Now, you are all readers. What are you reading? Anything I should down load? I am not used to selecting books off a screen, so any recommendations would be brilliant. I need to build a wee reading list.  Any favourites?

The Daily View.

Good morning. Cold but still. John is going to work on building the pump a wee warm box while I am away, he has a list to work through, so until then it is working well bringing the pump and the pulsator in and out. Once you start lifting it frequently it is not that heavy and I sleep so much better with it inside in the warm.  Yesterday morning even the iodine was frozen solid and NEVER touch metal with wet hands when it is only 17F outside. How do I forget these lessons so fast?

Have a lovely day. I really must try and focus on my packing. I have three nights in California. Now what shall we cook while I am there? I shall have to cruise about your sites and see what you are eating.

  1. I’m trying to eke out Hilary Mantel’s “Bring in the Bodies” so I don’t finish it too quickly, but I just checked, and it isn’t out on Kindle yet. “Wolf Hall”, should keep you occupied across the Pacific 🙂

    • I know about books with characters you hate to leave, I shall put that one in my master list and buy the real book if I see it.. Wolf Hall, I shall look that one up too.. thank you.. c

  2. I just finished the Hunger Games trilogy and enjoyed that. I’ve also read and enjoyed Doug Tallamy’s Bringing Nature Home. I also recently read, When in doubt, add butter by beth harbison and it was pretty good. My nook also offers free downloads not sure about kindles but free is always good!

    • I must check into the free downloads, i know very little about the kindle so far, having scorned them for so long! thank you for these! have a fab day.. c

  3. I am currently listening to (long commute) In the Moon of Red Ponies by James Lee Burke. The writing has my stomach flipping as I listen, sometimes I sit in my car port listening because I can’t turn it off, other times I am too afraid to turn it on. The writing is beautiful as is the sense of place JLB evokes.

    • This is an amazing idea, i can listen from my kindle? can I? I must check that, a talking book as you travel would be divine.. I will find this book, thank you, hope all is well with your animals?.. c

      • James Less Burke is my husband’s very favorite author of all time. He just finished Creole Belle, the latest book, which he says is the best.

      • Sorry I dont know about kindles so i dont know if you can listen. i do it the old fashioned way talking books on loan from the library. All is very well with my animals, thank you.
I came very late to yesterdays post, too late to comment but my recollection is that there were three Roosters, Neanderthal Man, Son of NM and Bob, because you refused to do Son of Son of NM, so could this third Rooster be Bob?

  4. I’m currently working through (back through) everything by CS Lewis, fiction and non. I recently read a quote, something like The secret to good writing is telling the truth. I think that is Lewis’ brilliance. His word choice is amazing, laser-like, but it is the way he tells the truth, and trusts the truth, that makes his writing so powerful.

I also recommend all things Flannery O’Connor. Gothic, I think, is the best way to describe her fiction. Or perhaps comparing her to Brothers Grimm fairy tales.

  5. I haven’t read a good book in forever and a bit longer so I can’t be of any help, sorry C! I am going to miss our farmy shots while we are away but am excited for pictures of the adventure.

    • Sometimes we have to troll through a lot of mediocre books before a great one turns up.. We will all certainly miss the farmy, you along with me, as usual we will do it all as a team.. c

  6. I miss my reading time…The last book I read was George R R Martain’s Dance With Dragons – I’ve been reading the series since it was new, not because of the HBO series Game of Thrones.
I’ve got Kindle software on my laptop for traveling…everything in there from silly romance novels to weighty biographys and history books…It’s nice to be able to carry a whole library around, but I prefer paper!

    • I tried to read this kindle last night and I found myself discombobulated, unable to settle, too much page turning, so BRIGHT (have to work that out) but i shall persevere for the sake of convenience, and go back to books when i get to NZ and start cruising the bookshops out there.. c

  7. The sunset shot is gorgeous. We have a path like that here, too. I’m currently making my way through George R. R. Martin’s Song of Ice and Fire series (on book 2 right now). Top three books on my reading list are: Flight Behavior by Barbara Kingsolver; The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey; and Sweet Tooth by Ian McEwan. I’m really looking forward to the Barbara Kingsolver novel as she’s one of my favorite authors (and I thoroughly enjoyed her book The Lacuna earlier this year). I prefer paper, too. Have a delightful trip! 🙂

    • I am a great fan of Kingsolver too and would love to know the origins of her name.. also I have a few Ian McEwan, he is a wonderful writer.. I am going to get Sweet Tooth .. excellent.. thank you Robin.
