These things are sent to try us

Well my laptop has finally spat the dummy (gone black – I shall call the computer man today!) without any warning, of course. Well this happens to everyone. I am surprised they have not named a syndrome for it. ‘Post computer failure stress syndrome’ or something.   So I have had to move over to the tall teenagers computer while I think about what to do. Of course this means I have no photo shop, and alarmingly slow Windows 8 thingy, no files and I still cannot work out how to reduce an image to an acceptable size for you.

Just one image then. This is the most delightful shot of yesterday.

Ah well. This will just make me more discerning. I am struggling here to put a positive spin on losing my computer and everything in it. In fact I am more annoyed about losing the computer than everything in it.  But it will work out one way or the other. Today is a new day and I get to see it!

I dreamed last night that I was surrounded in little farms, there were fields of cabbages,  sunflowers and walnut trees next to mine and we shared rams and vegetable seeds and butter,we miked each others cows and noticed if a gate was left open. Everyone wore dirty gumboots and called out and waved from their slow red tractors as they chugged past. It was a lovely dream.

We had a startling sunny day yesterday. Just wonderful.

If I am not in tomorrow you know why.

Have a lovely day.

  1. Good luck with your laptop C! Maybe there’s hope for it…I gather you have all your photographs backed up, because it would a shame to lost them.
I bet you woke up with a huge smile on your face after that dream 🙂
You too have a nice day, we have rain in Madrid 😦

  2. Ooh it is so frustrating not to be able to work as you’d like – I’m still waiting for the Internet connection to be fixed in the new flat and it’s driving me mad ( and I never post anymore). I have to say though that coming here and reading you every day makes me feel as if I could hand a seed packet over the fence and ask you how the wee lambs are doing this morning. Could be you are making your dream come true, in a way.

    • I have sown the packet of coriander you passed over the fence! Waiting for them to pop up now! So in a very long distance way my dream did come true! hope you get connected soon too and hope you get to post soon too your garden is always lovely at this time of year! c

  3. Hi Celi, this computer problem seems to be universal. My laptop was giving me uphill yesterday too and when I switched on this morning I received a notification that Windows had downloaded IE version 10. They also supplied a couple of pages of How-to reset or activate your old settings should you so require. Could this be your problem? Have you defragged and backed-up recently?
Don’t write your laptop off completely just yet – your computer man should be able to fix it in a jiffy 🙂
Enjoy your weekend in case you disappear into a black hole somewhere. Laura

  4. Just typed a long comment – and it disappeared – drat.
Lots of people seem to be having computer problems – Windows appear to be updating IE to version 10. They also sent a couple of pages of instructions on how to reset or capture old settings should you need to. Have you defragged and backed-up recently?
Enjoy your weekend should you disappear (hope not, I’ll miss you and the Farmy) into a black hole somewhere 🙂 Laura

  5. What an utter bastard of a thing to happen. If you have to get another computer, do your utmost not to have Windows 8 as the system – it’s total crap. It’s really worth trying to buy an external hard drive to keep the pictures on. Western Digital do small 500Gb ones for not much, and you might find something on ebay. The less you have on the computer, the better the computer will work. You have all my sympathy – reallys sorry.

    • Yes avoid Windows 8, abut most of all definitely buy an external hard drive for your photos – they are pretty cheap and are life savers. Trust me darling I’ve been in IT for more years than I care to think of, and they are absolute gems! If you need help just shout…. x
Now back to your dream – I’ve always fancied driving a red tractor!!!

    • thank you roger, you are right on both counts. .. and I will look up this western digital .. i have not heard of it before.. I do have an external drive and all the good stuff is on it, this is why i am not too worried about losing this last lot, there is just a wee bit of writing that will improve with a rewrite anyway.. and I hope that there is a choice as to my system, I already hate windows 8.. c

  6. C –
I work in IT support and I would try the following:
Not sure if the computer will start up at all, but if it will turn on —
    1) Hit the F8 key until a menu comes up — select safe mode. If you can get that far – double click on computer, right click on C drive and select tools tab — select error checking button and select one or both options — you will have to reboot from there.
    2) Hit the F12 key to go to system diagnostics and follow instructions to run diagnostic tests there.

    Hope that will help

    Love the lamb picture

    • Oh I was all excited but nothing came up! Thank you so much for the instructions though i shall copy and store them. The screen is black but there are lights by the keyboard, I am tracking down my computer man as we speak, hopefully he will be able to resurrect it or at least recover the work.. we all get so comfortable don;t we.. it is human nature not to guard against disaster, we are eternally positive as a rule! c

      • Celi, it sounds like your screen went out. They do that for two reasons, and both are pretty easy to repair. If you have another computer monitor lying about the house, try connecting it to the video port of your laptop. If it is just a screen problem, you will have your laptop back until it can be fixed.

  7. Sorry. Computer problems stink. I happen to like the size of the pic! 🙂 Glad you had some sun to enjoy. We woke up to a burry 18F and it’s supposed to get into the 40’s today but the sky is gloriously clear so it looks like sunny for us. (I’ll have a hard time keeping the kiddos focused on school with such nice weather.) Hope you get your computer taken care of. Have a great Friday Celi!

    • I think you have exactly the same kind of weather as we have today, cold with lots of sun! Wonderful. yesterday we worked like crazy to get all the book work done with the promise of a lazy walk after lunch..they were also desperate to get outside.. so was I..c

  8. Sorry your PC is sick, Celi. I hope you’ve got a good repairman. Whether he can fix the machine, he very well may be able to recover all of its contents — or a good portion of it. I hope so, anyway. You may have been prevented from posting your usual quoto but the one photo you did share was a good one!
Have a good weekend and I hope you get good news from the PC doctor.

    • I hope so too. Fingers crossed. ah well. at least i have a back up.. laborious and difficult but I can get to it during school hours at least!! Worse things happen at sea. c

    • I love it when you guys start to talk to each other, you two girls comparing your tractors! Lucky we are all laughers!! Imagine! Persian Orange is a fantastic colour name. Our tractor is green too though in my dreams all tractors are red and have a chimney stack…c

  9. That is so annoying!
WP should give an option to reduce the size of the picture you post on the blog even if you load the full size to your album. Do you use the ‘add media’ button to put them in?
Anyway, the blooming lambs are playing roulette well … that is to say, the lambs are blooming, and learning to gamboll!
My computer is incredibly slow today – wonder if the IE upgrade is responsible, or what?

    • IWordPress does give this option, but you have to scrolll down quite a way to find it on the add media page. It is BELOW Insert into post!

With a bit of luck you can get the computer repair man to clone the hard disk on your dead laptop – they did that for me when my old pc died. And YES get a spare hard disk. I took mine to Sally’s, so had all my pictures and poems and could add more while I was away.

My fingers and toes are all crossed for you. Vx

  10. I understand how you feel , to be without a computer. It’s tough, really tough. I do hope you had your photos backed up, but I suspect not based on your post content. Make an external hard drive your next purchase. Good luck. The romping lamby photo is adorable. Adorable. Hugs.

  11. I’m sorry your ‘puter is playing funny buggers. We had the power out here from 11:30am til 8:30pm and no puter, no net, no “nuffin” and it stinks!
What a wonderful dream though. I wonder if it’s a premonition for the future? 🙂

  12. I’ve had this happen. Very frustrating, and always too expensive and always at the wrong time! Nobody has mentioned cloud computing. There are several free sources to upload your photos to the internet “cloud.” (Of course, your blog is one example of photo storage on the “cloud” in a sense, for the photos you have chosen for your posts.) WP also stores a certain amount.
If you had to choose one photo, the romping lambs had to be it today! Hope everything works out ok. Would hate to lose you!

    • Thats OK we know you are working and doing interesting stuff, as long as we know you are OK, disappearing is ok!! (like that makes any sense.. laughter) .. c
