One and a half fences

I worked like crazy yesterday, successfully fencing in those naughty wandering lambs, I started another fence but did not have enough time to finish it as I had to get on to the evening  chores and milking the cow. When I was done I came up to the house and there were people everywhere and kids and noise and loveliness. oh-dear-002

The day was not without its challenges. The power was out for most of the afternoon (someone hit a power pole with a  tractor believe it or not) which sent the  builders back to hammer and nails. Then it rained, in fact it poured on and off which was lovely but not ideal for drinks  outside in the sunshine. But that’s OK because we had lots of roof to stand under. The home-school children and I  set up a chain at the kitchen table and made  the roast beef sandwiches.  After I had gone to  find a glass of wine  they set up their own chain and made honey sandwiches until the 8 little loaves of home made bread had been chomped up. I do love children who will eat.

Of course I forgot to take any photos of the gathering.

But that was OK I had taken a few ‘in case of’ shots earlier of the rain. The rain was just wonderful, we got a couple of good heavy showers.

And now a new day is dawning. Misty and soggy, with the kitchen bench covered in litter and Daisy standing at the gate. Daisy was strange yesterday. She would not walk into the milking parlour without being firmly coaxed. She was craning her stretched neck around peering into the ceiling taking cautious  tip toey steps through the doorway with her long long legs. The barn swallows have returned and they always nest in that ceiling but surely that enormous cow is not afraid of a tiny bird.  She refused to eat and just stood to be milked – her head turned to watch me, eyes wide.  I took her store vegetables outside and she ate them there then went back to grazing the back of her dairy mistress paddock.  She is very clean from the rain though which is nice.

The painter is coming back today to undercoat the inside of The Coupe as he could not use his sprayer yesterday (no power) . So I had better get going.  Though I am feeling a little, um.. tired.

You all have a lovely day.

Love your foggy brained friend, celi

  1. Oh! I can just imagine the line of kids making sandwiches…need inspiration for a brunch potluck for today with some food journalist friends…the pressure is on! Love the spring rain….we need it! Have a beautiful day.

  2. Those little birds are fierce bombers! Sneak off for a rainy Saturday afternoon nap … you deserve it 🙂 Laura

    • I must agree with Laura, taking some down time is a very good idea indeed! And she’s right, you do deserve it! No doubt a wonderful time was had by all yesterday! Wish we all could have been there!!!! xo

  3. I have 3 little boys-and we are in the midst of construction too! I made lunch for the crew and my family yesterday as we are far,far from drive thru! I love your pictures I amso glad I am not the only one with a whirlwind of a day!

    • morning honey and i am also grateful to know that there are other women out there with a house full of workers PLUS the work of the day! c

  4. If an angry swallow swooped into Daisy’s face, she might well be wary of them. That one I photographed for Wednesday’s post nearly ran me inside, and I have arms to wave at them!
    Enjoy your day!

  5. rain is wonderful, just not when your baling hay! Good morning Celi; i am glad your fun was not hampered. joy is something that we don’t seem to get enough of.
    have a blessed day mike

  6. Good morning, c! Have you ever been strafed by a swallow? Particularly one that’s nesting? Quite frightening.

I also love children that love to eat good food, and it’s good to know that there are still a few them around. 😀

    • I just came in from mowing and was followed by a wee crowd of them. I know it is summer when they are back, I have never been strafed by one though, so far!! c

      • See that wee little scar on the top of my head? That’s from a swallow who took a major disliking to me when I was about 8-year-old. It’d built a nest in the garage, and no one could walk within shouting distance of its nest without having their hair ruffled by that maniac. My dad finally popped the nest off the rafters so we could walk into the house. 😀

  7. I love that last photo C. the farmy looks so peaceful in the rain! I see a big old lovely barn? house? in the background…is that your neighbor’s farm?
Sounds like the shout out was so much fun!!

    • That is the neighbours farm house and in fact was one of the original family houses (Johns mothers family) , it has gone to a cousin now and has some lovely old farm buildings.. c

  8. I have a wish list. If I could I would tuck myself into the magic pocket of Oswald, Gentleman Rabbit, and fly to The Farmy. I would sing to Sheila and Charlotte. I would rub Daisy’s velvety nose and tell her she has beautiful eyes. Then the dogs (with Blue following close) and I would walk the dandelion path. A few clucks and the hens would gossip with me. Perhaps Duke of Kupa would present me with a feather for remembrance, and the lambs and sheep would do their version of a Maypole dance in the rain. Finely I would linger long in the kitchen making special a dessert for our supper, then sharing a glass of wine or two with my doppelganger Celi. Have a splendid weekend. V.

  9. Oh how wonderful that would be, they would all love you.. and I would love to have you too and your special dessert! You would even have one of your own whisks with which to whip up the dessert! c
