One and a half fences

I worked like crazy yesterday, successfully fencing in those naughty wandering lambs, I started another fence but did not have enough time to finish it as I had to get on to the evening  chores and milking the cow. When I was done I came up to the house and there were people everywhere and kids and noise and loveliness. oh-dear-002

The day was not without its challenges. The power was out for most of the afternoon (someone hit a power pole with a  tractor believe it or not) which sent the  builders back to hammer and nails. Then it rained, in fact it poured on and off which was lovely but not ideal for drinks  outside in the sunshine. But that’s OK because we had lots of roof to stand under. The home-school children and I  set up a chain at the kitchen table and made  the roast beef sandwiches.  After I had gone to  find a glass of wine  they set up their own chain and made honey sandwiches until the 8 little loaves of home made bread had been chomped up. I do love children who will eat.

Of course I forgot to take any photos of the gathering.

But that was OK I had taken a few ‘in case of’ shots earlier of the rain. The rain was just wonderful, we got a couple of good heavy showers.

And now a new day is dawning. Misty and soggy, with the kitchen bench covered in litter and Daisy standing at the gate. Daisy was strange yesterday. She would not walk into the milking parlour without being firmly coaxed. She was craning her stretched neck around peering into the ceiling taking cautious  tip toey steps through the doorway with her long long legs. The barn swallows have returned and they always nest in that ceiling but surely that enormous cow is not afraid of a tiny bird.  She refused to eat and just stood to be milked – her head turned to watch me, eyes wide.  I took her store vegetables outside and she ate them there then went back to grazing the back of her dairy mistress paddock.  She is very clean from the rain though which is nice.

The painter is coming back today to undercoat the inside of The Coupe as he could not use his sprayer yesterday (no power) . So I had better get going.  Though I am feeling a little, um.. tired.

You all have a lovely day.

Love your foggy brained friend, celi

  1. The rain arrived here at 5:00 a.m. this morning. I pulled a few weeds while out filling birdfeeders and freshening birdbaths. There is much singing this time of year, and I love it!

  2. The rain was forecast for all of today, but luckily it has held off until about an hour ago. Meant I got a lot done in the garden and all the plantings I made will get a good soaking in! And now I am bushed and sitting with a cup of tea, reading my favorite blog and listening to the rain on my tin roof, aaah heaven! Wish I lived nearer as I would love to share some of our moments together. Who knows one day I might just go on a road trip……One little old lady and her two dogs traipsing across country.

    • I would absolutely love you to do that, come soon!! Actually in a month then the coupe will be ready for you and the dogs! You would fit right in.! c

  3. Glad that you got some rain. Even gladder that we didn’t. Now that the deck is fully dry, however, it can rain as much as it likes. Honey sandwiches? Sounds very much like a certain 90 year old that I know. Sounds like you all had a good time and that’s great! Have a good night, Celi. Get some rest! 😉

  4. You may be very, very tired, but good things are happening – the showers are welcome, the noise of the builders is gone amd they have been happily fed and watered, the coupe is nearly ‘done’, more fences have gone up . . . well, hope Daisy’s being spooked does not last! Have meant to ask – do you have poisonous snakes and spiders around? [yup, you can see I live in rural Australia 🙂 !] . . . hope you can get some lovely rest with soft pitter-patter of rain on the roof . . .

  5. A line of kids making sandwiches, chatting and laughing makes the heart smile.
We had rain and thunder storms this week which are very unusual this late in spring but it was refreshing to smell the rain and hear the raindrops through out the day

  6. I’m sure you’re tired Celi, but it sounded enchanting, especially the children chirping like sparrows and making their own chain of honey sandwiches…I don’t suppose anyone there will ever forget those magic moments surrounded by kindness and joy and happy children, animals and adults ….

  7. We are cool here. Three days of cool…like jacket cool. But THANKFULLY no killing frosts…what a horror that would be with all the corn, alfalfa and pintos up and growing fine…not to mention my garden….so heading toward you is is this much cooler weather. We start warming up tomorrow. By Friday you should have our cool down. (Unless it stalls over Nebraska)

  8. Oh, I’ve missed so much here at the Farmy! Who are these children and when did they magically appear? I’ve got lots of catching up to do! We’ve had a deluge of rain which I don’t mind because everything is starting to green up so nicely! xx
