Every day dawns anew, washed, shiny and ready for living in.

Every day there is a new dawn. Every day. Everyone gets one.

morning-009

It is true. No matter what troubles we are dealing with,  we all get another chance tomorrow.

morning-001

Yesterday the farmy woke to a little  snow and more of the deep chill.  Not as deep as some and certainly not as much snow and ice as many. It is just us. This is how we were. Cold.

morning-018

A bit chilly.

Mama and I lived to see another day. Moments after I put the call through to the vet, she cleaned. Three more long dead little fetus lambs and all the other extras.   The vet said we will see how she is tomorrow.  She has had her shots and I shall continue her home made electrolyte regime. Mama is still very shaky when standing, but is doing better by the hour.  She is an old girl, but determined, we will see what today brings.  But her breeding days are over. She can be the old gran on the farm now.

The general consensus is that  she is old, she has had too many multiple births,  not in good condition when she got pregnant, out on the fields and not coming in for the good hay and her minerals, much further ahead than the others and  I was on the couch with my stupid injury and did not notice. Evidently with many sheep, a ewe will abort rather than allow the fetus to drain the mother unlike human babies who will drag all the iron and calcium from their mothers body and thrive regardless. Like many  problems this was a collection of things that I missed connecting until it was too late. The farmer cannot afford time off.

There will be tests to make sure, but it all makes sense.

She held these dead babies for at least four days, this is why it is taking her so long to rebound. I hope she does.

monday-again-021

The Duke of Kupa is doing the gapey mouth thing again so I have begun the second half of his worm regime.  But his tail has begin to grow much faster in the last few days so I think that he is more well than he was.

monday-again-028

Queenie is just, well, Queenie, lovely.

monday-again-024

Tilly and her older sisters came in out of the blowing  snow , then their door froze shut overnight,  and Tilly was the loudest at complaining about it. monday-again-007

The big red truck has been hooked up to the Stock trailer. Two of the biggest plonkers are off to the abbatoir today. It will be an early start for everyone.  As a last supper they had a bucket of kitchen scraps from the local pub. So, thank you fat piggies.  You will be feeding some of my favourite people and their families.

chicken-011

Speaking of growing food we had fried chicken from the farm last night. I have never made fried chicken before.  Dredge in seasoned flour,  then egg,  then seasoned flour and into hot  oil.  It was deceptively easy. Now to work on variations!!

‘Lucky we are, to know we are so lucky’.  Because for all the troubles we have, we are so very lucky to be able to grow our own good clean food.

And remember, if you are close by, or even a few hours away, there is land here, you can grow some food out here too.  It is my absolute pleasure to be able to feed people. Whether from my kitchen or my fields.  There is always a way.  If we can’t work together, how can we expect governments, or countries to work together.  It can be so easy if we choose to allow it to be easy.  Small is good.

And when we see how long it takes to grow food and how much work goes into the health of our food, we eat more responsibly.  Waste is practically eliminated.  More practical.

Have a lovely day.

  1. Ever since I read the story about when our John and you went to get Mama I have loved her so for all she went through before coming to the farmy and getting to be be treated like animals should. I hope she recovers and gets to enjoy being the Grand Dame of the farmy! Boo and Marmalade are just too cute and make all of our days. Please take care of yourself.

  2. Celi, you can’t beat yourself up over not noticing what was happening with Mama earlier. You were recuperating, my friend, which you must allow yourself to do. It sounds like Mama it getting better by the hour. So thankful for that! I love the picture of Queenie! She is such a dear. Although I’ve never seen her with any other expression than just that one. 🙂 Stay warm! xo

  3. Yes I’d really enjoy reading that story of Mama’s rescue again. Your stories are all so touching. Yesterday’s tucking in Sheila–complete with her sound effects–tops my list. So relieved to know Mama has aborted the rest of the fetuses and wll now be able to heal. Thank you for a shot of sweet Tilly, even if she is the loudest complainer.
Your attitude and fortitude are such an inspiration to me, Cecilia, because I see that you could easily be depressed, discouraged, totally despairing, in fact, if you chose to–and you’d have every right with the literally life and death problems you face. Yet you choose the bright side, the hopeful side. I sure cannot say this about myself.

  4. Good Morning!
So glad to hear the good news about Mama! Now she can live out her days without any worries! 😀
I know…no time to be out of commission on a farm. Everyone needs to be taken care of no matter what. There are times when we crawl our way out there to do just that!
Because I am Celiac I have an awful time during wheat harvest. Have to wear a mask. Next year I am getting a special mask to keep from getting sick. Kevin and I have each other’s backs. I hope we always can! It can be pretty rough. Especially when you have livestock.
You were injured and still you did what you could! Mama is okay and Kupa is on his way to good health too! Because of “your” excellent care! Truth be told! 🙂
I am getting geese and ducks this spring! Just a few chickens.
Still would like to get those goats!!!! Kevin is so stubborn! uffda… LOL
24 more days til I get my puppy!!! Woo hoo! It won’t be long now! Can’t wait!!! LOL
Today I am baking again. Glimmer Cookies! Recipe from King Arthur Flour! I made them last year and there were a huge hit!
Gotta run…have a great day everyone! Love to all!!!
((((((Celi)))))) You are a good soul! Love your photos today! Especially our dear Boo and Marmalade!

p.s. Growing our own food is a luxury that I never take for granted. The work never ends, but eating healthy food is a worth all the labor!!!!

  5. Poor Mama, good she cleaned out so hopefully she’ll have a quick recovery. Since we’ve started growing our food a few years ago, I’ve noticed a lot less waste as well. We just get more creative with preserving and using. At the very least the scraps go back into the earth to help grow more goodies.

  6. So glad you know where you are now with poor Mama… now you can concentrate on getting her back on her feet… its hard to visualise your cold when we’re so warm here at the moment… glorious pic of Boo and Marmalade, the Inseperables… Keep warm

  7. Now that all the poison is out of Mamas system she will rally and regain her health. Four days is a long time to have dead inside her. Your dedication and care in spite of your injury is truly amazing. Without you giving her nourishment these last few days, she would have surely perished. Kupa looks good; I hope he gets better and I think you will figure out what to do. Another wonderful picture of Boo and Marmalade. They are growing up together and will always be best friends. Sometimes we tend to forget that every day is a fresh, new start. Thank you for your uplifting posts, Celi.

  8. Celi, girl of my heart. There are very few days that do not begin with your blog. If I am late to the computer Lar is asking about things on The Farmy. Today I read filled with joy. It started with the glittering photograph of the horizonless prairies. It reminded me of our prairie years – the broad expanse, the ability to see forever. Then it ended with the endearing photograph of close friendship. Thank you. Xx V.
