Sheila’s bedmaking

Sheila spends a lot of time on her bed these cold days. You can always tell how cold it is going to be by how high she pulls the straw up. This is a day time bed.  Her day bed.

Later when she was out in the fields the chickens came in and wrecked it. She had to start all over again. I imagine she was quite cross.

Everyone got a double dose of food again yesterday. Especially the cows.

I put the young sheep out in the field while I re-organised the sleeping quarters so Mama could go into the clean pen.  The pen she has been in will be cleaned out completely, limed and left bare as long as I can, to try and get it clean enough for the lambs that may be coming late winter.

We found a hawk on the floor in the barn yesterday having a fight with one of the Peafowl and the guineas were closing in. Even Kupa was lining up to have a go.  I got a big pole and chased the big birds away so the hawk could get its bearings and fly out but it stood with its legs slightly apart, firm on the ground, a little hawk about 12 inches high, brown and white and speckled, dishevelled and ruffled with its wings slightly raised, awkward yes determined.  For the longest time it watched me.  Its eyes firmly on mine, taking no notice of the barn birds. It was a beautiful little hawk. I began to suspect that it had been injured and then had  to consider how to  help it. It was only a few feet away from me, just standing there, it took me all my time just to keep the other birds from attacking it again. Then it flipped up into the rafters and after a few minutes, it glided straight out the doors and was gone.

    • she would makes it and lie in it too if you let her!!. you may need to build her a wee ramp though to get up there but you know about those with your turtles.. c

  1. Hi! Late again! Sheila you are such a good housekeeper!!! You work so hard and the darn chickens!!! Scold scold scold! How interesting you had a hawk in your barn! He sure got what for didn’t he! LOL
It is still bitterly cold here and expecting some more snow…back east is getting hit really hard! So no complaints.
Made chocolate dipped marshmallows with red and green nonpareils on top! Look wonderful and taste even better! Ate some of the mistakes! LOL Baby lambs soon! So cute!
Hope you are feeling better on the backside! 🙂
Shipped my baby boy his Christmas package!!! Lots of goodies and a nice check!!!
Take care see you tomorrow! ((hugs)))

  2. I do love that last photo of Sheila in her bed, surrounded on either side by her carefully crafted draft excluders… She’s a clever girl, and I’d pay hard cash to see her in a piggy coat.

  3. Truly a wonder of nature that a pig’s instincts warn of weather and knowledge stretches far enough as what to do for herself! That bed is something else again!! Wonder what kind of a Mom she will make 🙂 ! Hope she will learn from you!! Don’t think the hawk will be back – having the power in the skies it must be allergic to enclosed spaces after that episode . . .

  4. I’m glad you got the hawk out of the barn without anything being injured. On my way home from Michigan a few years ago, a hawk dove into a flock of birds that were eating along the roadside, sending them helter-skelter into the air. It was like having a front row seat for one of the better animal documentaries. You must feel the same watching Sheila make her day and night beds. She really is something else, Celi. I’m sure it’s been snowing in your area for a few hours now. It started here at about 10:00 pm. I hope we don’t get too much. G’night, Celi.
