I am not sure if this is Pania again, too far away to see if she has the gap in her crown or not. But What is she doing up there again? Probably trying to warm me about what I would find in the chook house.
Sheila was in the chook house to steal their food.
But I had already collected the eggs so she followed me back out and ate them one by one standing knee deep in the snow. In fact her diet has lots of food in it but no oats and oats are her favourite food. Usually I give her a mix of oats and barley and wheat instead of the dreaded corn or soy. But I think the oats have been fattening her up. But now no oats – only eggs, milk, wheat germ, alfalfa and piles of veges and fruit from the store. (They give me a bag of old stuff twice a week). But all in smaller portions of course as portions are the most important part of any diet.
Good morning. We may not have a dawn again today as we are in the midst of another snow storm. The clouds are still very low. The light will just filter into the air like fine sand. I cannot see much from the windows but it does not look like we had too, too much. As opposed to TOO much. All the deep footprints on the porch are filled so I am going to guess maybe two or three inches.
We had a plethora of incredible comments yesterday. Thank you for those. There are many new ideas in there for those of us who are trying to live within our means and the means of the generous forgiving earth we share with. So if you missed them, pop back, the comments are guaranteed to be interesting reading. I shall go back now, while I am waiting for the light to rise, so I can answer last nights contributions. I might see you in there.
Maybe I should be writing a book of comments. But imagine the copyright issues!!
Or Maybe I should make a collection Post from the Comments Lounge. Or a series. Now there is a thought!. Hmm..
I hope you all have a lovely day.
Your friend on the farmy

PS Good news. The best news. The lost teenager Jade, the daughter of one of the original Fellowship members has been found. She is alive and safe in the hands of the French police who found her yesterday. Her mother our friend is ecstatic. So thank you all of you who helped in the search with your shares, and prayers, twitters and hanging posters. Every little bit helped. Many thanks.

ROFL – she’ll be quite a challenge on a diet 😉
She is making her disapproval known.. but she will get used to it, and there is another theory that cutting back the groceries a bit actually helps them come into heat as well.. c
It’s a good job she doesn’t know that chicken taste good 😉
my thoughts exactly! c
I was reading that pig breeders keep their pigs hungry, especially the boar. Since they are not on their natural food of pasture, they get fed grain and that makes them fat so they go hungry and it is a fine line between hungry and too hungry. When I get hungry I get mean…lol. Do you have skim milk for Sheila and you keep the cream for yourself? Or access to whey? Lots of protein, I am just having trouble with the thought of a skinny, hungry pig.
I am fairly sure she will never be skinny and she has unlimited access to good green alfalfa hay, which she loves.. so no worrying emily.. c
Oh ,thank goodness
Poor girl, she doesn’t understand why her portions are now being controlled… She has no body image issues at all, and quite right too. She’s a fine figure of a piggy.
Morning kate. She does have a fine figure, lovely tall girl.. c
Oh my, I never knew about your friends missing daughter, what wonderful news to hear she has been found. Clearly I was on holiday too long!
Have a wonderful day Celi.
🙂 Mandy xo
Your holiday was just right, too much longer and i would have sent out scouts to find you too! c
I am so pleased that Jade has been found…I reposted that over and over again….I was beginning to get really worried and her poor parents must have been going up the wall…so thank the Good Lord all is well. As old as she is she deserves a smacked bottom for disappearing…
As for Sheila..I can feel sorry for her as I have tried to lose weight and its always the favourite foods which have to be cut out…don’t let her get too skinny, no decent boar would fancy a skinny bird, they like ’em with a bit of meat on their bones
Thank you for posting, as much as anything it was a wonderful support for her family.. c
Poor Sheila. First she’s stuck by a boring boar, but not stuck in the sense you’d been hoping for, (and why can’t I write something without it rhyming?) and now her favourite food is taken away. I think this is a recipe for pig-headedness. Good morning, c, and keep yourself warm!
You can take the girl out of the poem but not the poet out of the girl!

I wouldn’t have thought oats were very fattening, but eggs are definitely full of fat (bad cholesterol!). How do you keep a fat pig out of the chook house?
No snow here. Lots of rain and a biting wind.
Morning Viv. Sheila does need the protein and short of feeding her the actual chicken I think an egg will do pretty well. I am not a fan of cholesterol and all its warnings, it is a very modern reading that i completely ignore. Though my father agrees with you. I eat as many eggs as sheila a day and am not fat. And I can work right through to 3pm without feeling peckish at all. I think an egg is a perfect food, my grandmother who died slim and beautiful at almost 100 told me to eat two eggs scrambled with parsley every morning, and put my hands in the earth every day. Your hattie was a bonus this morning with the blowing snow. I am thinking of tacking it into the hood of my jacket so everything stays in place.. thank you again, I did tell you that i am still using your handwarmers didn’t I?
That bad cholesterol thing is being debunked now. I am with you….I don’t believe all that nonsense. People have been eating eggs for hundreds of years. Just a ploy for big pharma to make lots of money, I think. Eggs with parsley…what a great idea. I had a bumper crop of parsley last summer and dried and froze a ton of it. Besides, animals don’t process cholesterol like we do. It is all good.
You might know this trick, but when i dry parsley i pick it and stuff it in a brown paper bag, seal with tape then put the bag in the back of the fridge and forget it. 2 months later I take it out, quite dry and quite green, into a jar! Done. Holds its taste beautifully.. morning emily..
Like this tip – must write it down so I don’t forget! Like you I don’t take any notice of the scaremongers and Cholesterol – and anyway, our eggs are full of good stuff as we treat our hens right!!
What a wonderful tip! I will be doing this from now on. Thank you, Celi
Poor old Shiela – whatever did the chickens think of their new table mate? Great news about Jade – if there was ever a story deserving a happy ending it was hers.
They flew up in fright then raced back to save their food. She is often in there, their house is the warmest on the property, they don’t mind her at all.. c
I am beyond thankful for the safe discovery of Jade. Praise God.
Morning Audrey.. c
Poor Sheila diets are not fun at all. She and I will have to be commiserate as I too am trying to lose weight (not as hard as I should be). Love the picture of her cleaning out the chicken feeder. No spoilage or waste worries with her around. I noticed a chicken catcher (we use to call them a chicken hooker until mom decided that wasn’t appropriate) hanging buy the feeder. Haven’t seen one of them for awhile. Use to be pretty handy with one.
We are looking at another snow day here. The freshman was hit with the realization last night that school was probably going to be extended this year as we have used our built in snow days as of today. The senior is quite pleased as graduation will not be moved back. The commuting college student is so over the snowy, slick roads and reckless drivers. I’m tired of jumpstarting vehicles (guess I shouldn’t carry a set of cables in my vehicle) and husband is tired of towing trucks out of ditches and snowed in lanes/roads/cowpaths. I am very happy that we have 4-wheel drive vehicles to use.
Wonderful news that the lost is found. I can not imagine what her mother went through not knowing what conditions her daughter was in. Makes a mom’s heart hurt for another mom.
If I decide to try making sauerkraut again I will ask for tips as it is very frustrating to have the darn stuff mold instead of cure. You would think with all the German blood in my veins that the making kraut ability would be in my DNA.
I will get john to write the sauerkraut recipe down for you, but he does use whey, can you get whey?.. c
I will have to think about where I can come up with some whey. Mostly I just need to access some clean fresh milk and make my own whey (if I can leave the fresh milk alone lol). It is interesting that he uses it to cure the cabbage. Does he keep the kraut in the cool cellar to cure?
no he just cures it up here in the kitchen, he has a special crock which he says made all the difference, and when it is done it goes in the cellar or the fridge in jars.. c
I was hoping that it was that I didn’t let the kraut cure in a cool enough place. I’ve been told that you can use a plastic container but I think the old crock is probably one of those necessary but never mentioned utensils. I guess I need to find one of those.
There is a show on TV now that features a guy who build elaborate tree houses for people. I think of you whenever I see it.
You guessed right there, I have a longing to live up in a tree house! Morning bill, darlin’ c
I am so relieved that child has been found! That is the best news ever!!
It is.. definitely.. c
Poor old piggy! What on earth did the vet mean she might be too old to breed? She might have trouble going into heat because she didn’t last year?
We had snow in the night, and now sleet…nasty weather today. Stay warm and dry, and we’ll try to do the same 🙂
Yes that is exactly as i understand it, and on top of that I have no boar and bloody cold weather.. c
I wish I could have heard you explaining portion control to Sheila, as you led her from the chook’s buffet. I’ve no idea how much snow fell here. The wind has started blowing and I won’t really know until I get out there to clear it. At this point, no matter how much there is, it’s going to be too much. 😉
Are there any footpath/sidewalks left in chicago, where do they put all that snow?.. i think you and i are having a day inside today! c
Oh, there are footpaths alright. It took me an hour but I made one on my block. The last report I saw said that this part of town got 7 inches. It’s stopped now but lake effect snow is still possible. I hope they’re wrong. I do not want to go back out there again. You’ve got the right idea: an inside day!
I am so happy that Jade is found!!!! I had been following along on Facebook and had shared. What wonderful news.
I guess you can’t blame Sheila for her wanting her favorite food. I imagine the chooks were a little irritated to have her in there…….
they squawk and rattle about when she appears but then just try and eat around her.. they are used to her visits.. c
So happy they found Jade!!!
Poor Sheila, the girl is just hungry….. I know the feeling…. been cutting back myself and boy is it tough.
little bits often is the best way.. no more big carby meals.. cutting back is certainly hard work for the first week or so.. coleslaw before every meal, that is my favourite way.. c
Funny you say Coleslaw!!! I have had it every night with my dinner this week. I like it sour with a vinaigrette vs any mayo base…I added cilantro & jalapeno from my neighbors hot hose last night – that was EXCELLENT!
Maybe Sheila needs more coleslaw?
