I had just taken this shot of Queenie Wineti standing knee deep in snow enjoying the sun when I was almost run down by Sheila carrying her lunch inside.
We were on a pause, Sheila was standing in the snow eating her medicine mixed with shredded apples and carrots. I was standing in the doorway to her sunporch bedroom. I took this photo of Queenie then I lowered the camera (I always shoot through the view finder I have never got accustomed to that odd screen on the back of Camera house so I turn it off) . I turned the camera off with my clumsy double gloved fingers, replaced the lens cap and was placing the camera on its shelf in the barn when I heard a clattering run right behind me.
All in one movement I reached back for the camera, switching it back on as I turned and raised it, taking off the lens cap with my free hand then without even having time to think I crouched, took this shot then leaped out of the way of a cold footed pig on a mission.
She raced past me with the bowl in her mouth and straight up into her straw carrying the bowl all the way to her window into the barn.( You have seen lots of pictures of her at this window watching me work).

She placed the bowl gently by her window. Finished her carrot sticks. Then picked the bowl up and threw it through the window into the barn.
None of those are terribly good pictures but they are action shots, no time to focus, you know how fast a cold footed pig can move.
I swear if that pig could sit back on her heels and wipe her hands together that is exactly what she would have done.
The Bitter cold was back last night.
The chickens are deeply unimpressed. Though they have the warmest house of the lot.
It is getting light, almost sunrise. Good morning.
I hope you all have a lovely day.
your friend on the farmy,

What a photographer won’t do for a photo…
Peder and I are laughing. Good morning, c!
Snorts – that’s *my* Sheila. I’m so with her on carrying that bowl around. It gets attention! XOXO – Bacon
Sheila is so clever! And I can’t blame her for wanting to eat indoors near her warm bed. It’s so cold out there! I hope you’re staying warm C! You should see how bundled I have the kids at the bus stop. I bet they would like to snuggle up in the hay too. 😉
Congratulations on capturing such great shots on the fly! The last shot of her is just priceless. Imagine the nerve of her throwing her food bowl out the window. Sheila is downright bawdy. Reminds me of The Canterbury Tales.
Last night I was watching Downton Abbey. There’re a few scenes with pigs and great sound effects of their snorting and grunting. Of course I thought of Sheila.I’d love to hear her voice, though I must say you give terrific renditions of your conversations with her, especially going night-night….er……ni-ni.
That piggy has a personality as big as can be and on a mission for sure, clever girl. In that last shot she almost looks like she was showing off for you. How many feet of snow are we looking at there? It looks daunting at this point.
My laptop crashed and burned last week 😦 I was more upset about being cut off from the Farmy than the security system 🙂 but I’m back again and caught up today. Interesting discussion last week about sustainability, sorry I couldn’t join in. Laura
Sheila; she’s my kind of gal! A pig with a purpose. Love it!
Reblogged this on albits and commented:
Why are pigs often the object of scorn? I don’t get it.
Sheila is so cool. A sassy, independent woman 🙂
A pig on a misson so well captured… I’m sure that pig in the future will talk…
that Sheila is a scream! Your farm would be a bit boring without Sheila!! I love those pictures of her!!! Good thing she has you for her Buddy!! The ole boar didn’t talk to her like you do!! He just wanted “some”! Slam bam! thank you Mam!! no cruisin’ around and cuddling!!!

What a gal Sheila is! Got my morning laugh….Thanks.
This morning the Canadian geese started flying and honking over the house. Back from their winter homes and starting north. It is the first sign that spring is coming. Or maybe I should say that winter might be slowly ending here.
Our daily fix of Sheila, the sassiest girl on the planet. and the most loveable..what a gift to the world your darling pig is… long live darling Sheila ( and you too, of course) XXXXX
Poor old chookies, to have lost their combs to this cold. I hope they’re ok! And go Sheila, she has so much personality! She’d have bowled you right over if you hadn’t jumped out of the way!
