Ribbons

Yesterday. The ribbons of green that had begun to wind themselves around the fields were covered in snow.

Yesterday. My old Carhart jacket that has served me well for years and lay across my back  for this entire terrible winter, and just as we plummeted back into the 20’s,  broke its zipper. Slopped its dripper. Spat the dummy.

Yesterday. I was digging out the North door so I could shut it in a snow storm FROM the North with a flapping jacket, and the fork broke.  Digging out the North door with the Handle of a fork in a snow storm, from the North in Spring, resulted in me saying some rude words. Queenie raised her eyebrows and then her tail and made her own rude statement.

Yesterday Daisy’s mastitis returned worse than ever.

Yesterday I discovered the bodies of two dead and gutted elderly chooks.  Killed by something nasty. This has never happened in my chook house before.  I said nothing at all.

Yesterday, I only took one photograph.

Yesterday my horizon was crooked.

So, I am going to look forward to warmer weather. I am going to retire my ripped and worn out jacket without a zip.  I am going to buy a new handle for my favourite fork. I am going to continue Daisy’s massage and milking three times a day, be grateful that she is not kicking and cycle through my stack of mastitis remedies, creating a protocol that will drop this chronic mastitis to an occasional rumble and at the same time I am going to finish the new Fort Knox chicken tractor and move the chickens into their summer premises  and out into the fields early.

The crooked horizon is just going to  have to wait ’til i have time.

But first: I am going to have a cup of coffee.

I hope you have a good, busy, lovely day

Love your friend on the farmy

  1. I can feel the fury from here, fuming down your arms and frothing out of your fingertips on the keyboard. What a diabolical liberty the weather is taking with your good nature. Poor Daisy, poor chooks, poor everyone suffering the icy blast.
    Chin up,

  2. They say all things happen in threes…you just blown that saying right out of the water. I begin to wonder just how much more you can take. I can only assume that you must be a very strong, patient, determined lady or rlse you are completely bonkers.
whichever it is I admire your guts… and spirit ..you are one helluva lady xxxxx

  3. Sorry you had a bad Monday! Take a deep breath, make the coffee(good advice), and count your many adorable blessings. Wishing you sunshine and warmth today!

  4. Suck it up girl, you can beat this shitty luck! You be one tough lady!! (and ask John to buy you some chocolate and crawl in a corner for ten minutes and eat it – that;s what I do on bad days!!)
    Hugs

    • That bad bastard chook killer was back again last night, but this time he tried to drag the dead chook back out the way he came in. These are big rhode island reds and she would not fit, however this has shown me where the hole in the wall is that he is coming through, so I guess you could call that good luck.. He must be big and agile. They roost very high and are big birds. I will work on it today now I have a few more clues..Wish I knew what it was. c

      • Maybe a fox? There are quite a few out there. (We have some that come right into town). Or maybe a coyote?

        • There is a thought, A very small fox maybe, it is not a very big gap.. hmm, well I can keep a fox out, that is easier to manage than a climbing animal.. c

          • Weasels usually only suck out the blood, a fox will usually carry it away to eat, I would guess a raccoon. Nasty thing to find. I find it helps to throw things, preferably things you don’t have to trudge around and pick up again . I call them “condo days” as in ‘why didn’t I buy a condo’. We had snow too and snow showers and cold cold wind yesterday and today after getting about 5″ of rain Thursday night and Friday. The only consolation is that after a deluge overnight Thursday and kind of mild temps on Friday you could almost see the lawn turning green. I’m going to believe this week is only a setback, by Monday we should be back around 60, if not – watch out for flying missiles!!

    • Thank you, and you are absolutely right.. i think today will be a good one, it is cold but still and the sun is shining in a clear sky.. Yes, today will be better.. c

  5. Some days deserve to be filed away in the ‘forgotten cos they sucked’ pile … Sounds like yesterday was one of them. {{{Big Hugs}}} and mega hope for a brighter tomorrow ❤

  6. I’m thinking possibly today should have been started off with a hot toddy instead of coffee? 😉 Sad about the chooks. Wonder what it was that got to them and how do you keep it away? And poor Daisy. I had 8 breast infections while breast feeding and they are not fun. For you or her I’m sure!

Hope today brings you all kinds of good fortune. xoxo ~ April

  7. it is snowing and sleeting here now. sorry about your chooks. i wonder what got to them? could it be a coyote? i hope it cn’t get into the barn!

    • No too small for a coyote and these guys roost very high in their house, I cannot smell skunk either, racoon? These are big birds.. I will work on it.. c

      • Coyotes come in packs…or at least two or more. It could be a small cat…do you have wild cats–a lynx there…we have them here. Or a small bob cat…we also have them here.

      • Skunks have a bone structure that collapses, like a rag doll cat. If they can get their head through, they can get their body through. I suspect that racoons are the same.
