See that Dot?

It is a barn swallow. Which means that summer can now be spoken of in more positive tones.   Gentler tones not those chilled, iceblock, impatient tones we have been hurling out into our gardens. It was not hot yesterday but as I worked I felt a delicious warmth spread into my bones. It was WARM. Warm is good. monday-036

This was Sheila all day yesterday. In the end I went and sat on her and told her she had better get up or she would get a sunburn. She moaned at my lack of empathy, got up, walked over to the other side of her Corridor paddock and laid down there. The sun was just too perfect for her to resist.

Look into the top left hand corner of that shot and you will see the Barn Across The Way. It is that close and that far away.

That shot is a bit of luck for you though. I was over there for a while yesterday still working on getting a handle on the space but did not take the camera. I am working out how to house the chickens in there. I would say there is just over two acres of grazable land with a nice shelter belt, but no fences. The fences take the time. monday-009

Marcel is thinking that possibly Queenie’s Bobby is more his size for the moment.

Daisy took advantage of a badly closed gate and let herself gently into the field with Queenie, the two bull calves,  Marcel the lamb and a tractor full of chickens who refuse to lay anymore until I build them a proper chook house.  All was well. The calves did not mind. Daisy was kind, did not kick anyone and Queenie was relieved to have some help with the young’uns.monday-014

Daisy’s own calf took absolutely no notice of her at all. Peace reigned.

It seems Queenies baby stole the shots yesterday. He is growing beautifully. He is very clean because Queenie and her big cows tongue cleans him daily. Speaking of tongues. monday-031

Lovely Daisy. Such a lady.

Morning girls.

Oh and thank you Eha for reminding me. Number Three is coming along nicely, putting the weight back on and eating like mad. So that is a relief. Last night should be the last cool night too. I worry about pigs when it is hot and then cold like that. Daisy is still suffering from mastitis in that one quarter.  But she is loving being out on the good grass, I have to ring her bell loudly for the milking now.

I hope you have a lovely day.

Your friend on the farmy

  1. Everyone looks so happy and healthy. Marcel and the bobbies all have that kind of juvenile beauty that children of all species possess. I can hear their little voices talking and laughing with each other like the puppies in the movie Babe.

  2. Sheila did look quite comfortable in that sunny spot. I missed shearing day, the sheep no longer wear their woolly winter coats. I’m glad Daisy played well with others in the field. Warm is good.

  3. After winter comes glorious Spring!! Farm people are more aware than anyone else, I think. Sheila looks positively svelte.

  4. You’re certainly warmer than are we. I’d say we’re about 50˚ now, though officially we’re warmer. O’Hare just isn’t as close to the Lake and the wind is blowing off the Lake. Marcel and the Bobbies look like3 kids looking for trouble. “We’re not doing nuttin, Ma.” That Sheila really is something else! It’s hard to tell with her lying down but she does seem to have lost some weight. Can’t wait to see her run now! 🙂

  5. Warmth! I think this is the first time I’ve heard that word from you for many, many months. Everyone seems to be having a good time. Nice.
