Rugged

I am staying at my Youngest Son’s house now – with him and his beautiful new wife and child – on the other side of the hill to Senior Son.  With my relocation the weather turned on its heel, the warmth scuttled for cover and we are now being blasted with strong cold winds. And on this rugged coast the winds Howl straight up the crevasse like valleys.

My youngest son’s house sits on the beak of an outcrop on a twisted coastline just around the bays from the airport. The houses jostling and stretching their necks for a piece of the view.  The land is a thin wedge, like a prow jutting out into the sea. Giving me many ocean faces to photograph on a short finger freezing walk.

The wind was so strong, I was having trouble keeping my feet, I should have taken a tripod.

Thank goodness my little sister gave me this big hand knitted natural wool jersey with long arms.

Today is Thursday here in New Zealand. I leave here on Saturday and return to America far across the sea on the same Saturday.  My children will be able to see my plane blast off from this house.  That sounds like such a lonely thought. Watching a plane fly away with your mother onboard. Such a tenuous thread.bleak-017

My daughter left for Melbourne  two days ago. Before she left we swapped kindles. So while we are apart, until January, we can read each others books.  We are calling it The Great Kindle Swap. Such a comfort being able to travel with my daughter’s favourite books.

I hope you are all finding loveliness in your day.

  1. I can hear and feel that wind, but in my case it is right outside my window. I remember someone once telling me that the weather in New Zealand, is very like our Irish weather. The skies certainly look familiar. Enjoy the last hours and safe travel all the way to the farmy!

  2. Those photographs of the sea yank and pull at me… yearning to be near the water. Alas… I’m a landlubber in a land-locked state but I sure do enjoy a good vacation at the beach. These photographs are so beautiful C.

  3. Your NZ posts have convinced me – Next holidays we are going to jump the ditch, hire a camper and do a big driving tour! We’ve been talking about it for years, 2015 is the time to jump instead of talk!! Enjoy the rest of your visit ❤

  4. A vantage point to survey life and time there on that point. Beautiful (it’s breezy and cooler than before, so I shall pretend our fingers are chilled by the same winds )- some how it is strangely comforting to have one on land watching your plane off – seeing you safely into the sky. When little and few traveled so much (and flying seemed very much like magic), we always found a spot near the airport to watch the plane into the air and as far as we could see it. It just seems right, so I’m glad your children will keep you in sight like that.
Safe travels and you know hugs and smiles shall greet you

  5. Dear Cecilia,
Thank you so much for sharing your trip and such special times. Lived on the Pacific coast of northern CA for many yeas. The oceans of our world are ever changing and beautiful. Your last pic of the wind-tipped ocean has such a lovely color. Safe trip home. Know the Farmy will be so excited to have you back!

  6. What a hauntingly beautiful coastline. NZ is such a gorgeous and diverse looking country. Definitely on the bucket list of places I’d love to go. I’m so glad you’ve had such a lovely and love affirming time with your family, children and their children. How wonderful. And also that you’ll be back there for summer and more happy events. 🙂
