Toads Do Not Become Princes you Know

But I have seen a lot of princes become toads.

This toad was calmly waking across the bottom step of the verandah before seeing us and hopping (literally) back into the bed of leaves. He is an American toad (Anaxyrus americanus). Very common. And so delightful.

He may even have been hibernating there. (I leave lots of upside down broken ceramic pots around the gardens for little hibernating creatures – I wonder if he hid in one of those for the winter). .

I like having the toads around because they eat a lot of insects.

They can survive short spells of below freezing temperatures because they have a kind of anti-freeze in their bodies that prevents ice crystals forming in their organs. So they can take quite a bit of cold. And by the looks of this big guy he did in fact survive last winter.

The American toad (Anaxyrus Americanus). Just out of hibernation. Camouflaged in dead leaves.

Nelson and a Cow

Roosters and chicken and little chick

The little lone chick is still going strong. That is all for me for today.

The site is still giving me problems and so I want to see if this will load at all.

When we navigate across I hope you all come with me but if you are worried about losing me – the new site will still be The Kitchens Garden. PLUS you can send me an email to celima.g.7@gmail.com and I will make sure to send you a heads up when we have launched.

More toad pictures from the old days.

Well that was interesting – I have not seen a link come up like that before?

I hope you all have a better day than I am.

Things are much more fun out on the farm.

  1. C- just so you know this post never popped up in my list so I went hunting and there are issues with your site. Things don’t load, no pics, and I had to maneuver just to get to the comments so I hope you see this and can figure out what’s going on. I think all the rest of the blogs I follow are working correctly so ???

    • was just going to add that you are now no longer even in my list of followed blogs- it is as if the blog no longer exists on WP. I literally had to enter the web address in a search link to get the blog to come up at all.

      • There is nothing anywhere on my end. I just came back here again through a regular internet search just to see if you had found the comments I left. I will keep checking periodically to see if you pop up anywhere there and feel free to email me if you want me to check anything else. dtecca59@gmail.com

  2. I clicked the link under your email sign-off, which took me to the home page. No images. I then clicked the Blog button in the menu bar and got here, but still no images and none of the usual top and tail stuff. Got to Comments when I clicked on ‘6 comments already’ or whatever. I’ll check to see if you’re still on my ‘Following’ list and whether the older posts in my Reader come up OK and will get back to you.

  3. Ok, me again. I have no old Kitchens Garden posts. You do not appear in my Followed Sites list, nor does your image appear in my side bar of followed sites. I tried to sign up to follow again and it told me I was already following you.

    • Exactly the same for me Kate, although I didn’t even attempt to re-follow as I suspected it wouldn’t be successful right now. They have wiped thekitchensgarden clean off of WP and I don’t like that 😦 I hope C can get things straightened out. Sounds like she’s working hard from her last update.

  4. This is the first one, that I responded to earlier. It’s in my reader now, with images. I just wanted to tell you about a local toad. You know about Queensland’s cane toads? An imported pest they brought in to try and deal with cane beetles. Of course the solution was worse than the problem. They are also quite toxic. Recently an absolutely gigantic one was discovered about 100km up the road. It weighed *5 kilograms*… that’s not a toad, that’s a small dinosaur. Of course, the papers are calling it Toadzilla.
