Sunday was lovely.
So we flew kites and walked on the beach.
Here are a couple of shots of the dunes.
There are signs everywhere saying do not enter the dunes. So they are recovering beautifully. But there is an old scientist down the road who says that dunes are not meant to be this stable – they actually need to flow but they plant the dunes so that the township is protected from the sand. I think this is a controversial subject.
The seas will pull them about sometimes – because you know the sea it is an unstoppable force of nature.
We did not get as far as the beach yesterday.
It rained ALL DAY yesterday, which did not go down well with me, but I told the children we were not marshmallows and we would not melt in the rain so we still managed three walks.
And this morning there was no rain – though it is still cloudy so we were able to get a walk down to check out the playground after First Breakfast
.. and now we are about to make Second Breakfast.
Second Breakfast is a CC omelette which is super thin and they load in all their own toppings and roll it up.
I totally love this little store. Every day after siesta the children and I walk down for a little ice-cream in a cone because you know – holidays. (In New Zealand we call the school break – school holidays or hols). Vacation is not a word we use often in New Zealand.

I don’t know what happened to my comment, but for what it’s worth– at fort glance I thought the horse head was chocolate–some wonderful creation of yours, Cecilia! I confess I’ve never seen the Indiana Dunes–and now I hear they ain’t what they used to be. Sad.
I have never seen the Indiana Dunes either but I am sure they shift and change as the seasons change.
Vacation is very American …and Latin languages, but not English 😉
Thats right ! I never thought of that. It is interesting what words take off in different countries. School holidays here and Spring break in the States.
I love little neighbourhood shops… I’ve been planning our week away at the beach and via Google maps reconnoitred bakery, butcher, seafood, supermarket, and cafes… so much fun to explore and support the local offerings.
Oh, that sounds like a great way to plan a trip. This little store is the only one in the village and must be packed in the summer but very quiet in the winter. I secretly think I might like to buy it. I can’t but it would be a great little business.
Dale and I have very similar tastes in holidays… When the H and I go away, we plan our activities around gastronomy, places we can eat, or buy stuff we can’t get at home. Our long-standing quest is for the ultimate meat pie, and we sample them everywhere. The ones from the café down the road at home are still the benchmark, but we continue to search… We also plan by places we can take Mouse and let him off the leash so he can run, which he loves. Greyhounds need their zoomies, and our north Queensland empty beaches are perfect, so long as dogs are allowed. I hope you win the lottery one day so you can come back and buy your little corner shop.
I love that – I saw a really old lady walking her greyhound yesterday. They both cruised along very slowly – in perfect sinc- I watched them all the way down the road. Their companionship and communication was just divine.
Mouse’s favourite pace is a saunter, which suits me fine. It’s just occasionally he busts out, and then I just watch in awe while he makes his 3 metre bounds across the sand. He’s a nutter, and I love him dearly…
looks wonderful , and I like the 3 walks in the rain and the 2nd breakfast. why not? oh and the little shop!
When my kids were little this is how I managed the holidays. We always come out of the hols fitter than we began!
Is that a real spider web? It looks much more regular than most and there aren’t any filaments radiating out from the center to connect the circling ones?????
Yes!! It is real. Not sure what the spider is though.

The kids are going to so miss having you for their special ice cream treat each day when holiday is over! The spider web is awesome and astoundingly clear in detail, almost as if it was drawn onto the picture of the plant.
Once the kids realized there were cobwebs shining in the post rain damp they were finding them everywhere!

I see all the time how we try to “fix” things in nature and end up messing them up further. Dunes probably ARE meant to flow.
