FreeBee is not Right

I don’t know if it is the cold or maybe he has a sore foot but he took some persuading to get up yesterday.

He is eating OK. But not at mealtimes. I think he may have had a falling out with Jude who can be quite rough. FreeBee is generally quite a laid back snoozy hog but there is something not quite right.

He went outside to the toilet but was moving slowly. I cannot quite put my finger on a particular symptom that can be treated.

Today will warm up a bit which will help.

Tima on the other hand is extremely well!

The cold does not phase her or Jude at all.

The calves just snuggle down in their deep straw and wait it out. I over feed them with low protein hay when it is cold so they have warm full bellies.

Yesterday I worked on and off the property and was fed by the farm all day. My omelette had eggs from the farm and kale and tomatoes from my glasshouse.

I took this shot from the carpark of a business I was cleaning last night. Needs must.

The rising moon was extraordinary.

The house smells like boiling cabbage. Mainly because I have been boiling cabbage! 😂 The restaurant pig bucket yesterday included a huge bag of cabbages. I cut them and cook them so they are all eaten up. Raw leaves tend to freeze solid before they are consumed – cooked food is eaten by the pigs and chickens straight away.

I just picked up huge hunks of boiled warm cabbage and hand fed FreeBee last night after I got back from cleaning. Late night chores.

I hope he is better this morning.

Time to get out there. It is 23F already. Much better. Going up to 51F by tomorrow which will clear out all this ice.

Have a good day.

  1. It is in the upper teens here this morning in the Western North Carolina Blue Ridge too. But the sun is up & will be warming things up, thank goodness. I hope you have found Free Bee rallied & perked up by his hand fed boiled cabbage.

  2. My goodness, feeding handheld warm cabbage to a pig after working late on a second job. What a wonder you are! I can’t imagine how you manage to get done all the things that have to be done.

  3. It’s warming up here in Savannah, too, with sunny skies predicted today and tomorrow. My chicken Tweety was active yesterday but crashed early, in the back end of the coop, under the heat lamp, where I’ve recently added fresh pine shavings. Now she’s in her nesting box, so she must have revived, a little. Hope FreeBee is feeling better.

  4. (Now I’m hungry for cabbage)
The moon has been especially lovely recently – putting on quite a show with the landscape and clouds here – just for those who see.. Glad you have.
Brr – it’s cold there (of course it is winter. We’re in the a couple of nice mile sunny days then rain and chilly wind as the fronts blow in, then a couple of days of cold/cool weather. Expecting rough stormy weather late tonight and through tomorrow – Hank the Husky won’t be happy about delayed walks.)
Hope FreeBee feels better – or gives more lear signals about what is wrong. Munch that warm cabbage and stay cozy, FreeBee ( and Ci)

    • FreeBee refused to eat or drink this morning. Mouth firmly closed. So now it is up to him. After Sheila died (I had to have her put down and that scene has never left me) – if an animal wants to fold up into a warm corner and die in their own time – refusing my help – I let them. I know that sounds rough but I hope someone gives ME that choice. I don’t know.

      • Sometimes it’s best to let nature take its’ course. I have trouble pulling out end of season struggling plants. Totally understand Sheila. In this realm, Winter/this time of year has offered many the final choice of rest.
We shall see. Strength and compassionate energy being sent for the waiting for what ever happens.
        Hang in there.

      • Oh C, this is hard news to hear, especially after last nights Farmy video hearing FreeBee snuffling in the straw. How quickly things can change…

  5. Lovely moonscape through the clouds! We are warming up as well and expecting rain now for days on end.

I hope you can figure out what may be up with FreeBee. Maybe he and Jude just need a break from each other. That happens with roommates sometimes.

  6. Sad to read about Freebee’s condition. If this is the beginning of the end, l think your approach is appropriate. Always remember the start you gave him, his other life away from you and then back to you in his dotage. A perfect pig’s life. X

  7. My house smells of (red) cabbage too, but also smoked sausage, apple, red pepper and garlic all braised together with butter and cumin. Perhaps a little too rich for a poorly piggy. I hope he starts to improve soon.
