Mud Mud Mud and a Tomato

Mad in field with a pig

Do you want to see some mud says FreeBeeI’ll show you some mud.

Freebie is very, very well. I still can’t quite work out why he spent two days in bed. Maybe it was just the cold?

Cough in a field

The mud is only going to get worse – I suspect we are looking at another wet winter- so far it has been wet and warm. Though the cold weather doesn’t really come till January/February round here.

Wounded white chicken

The last little white chicken seems to be doing OK, but I’m not going to give it a name yet – I am not convinced that it can survive with such a badly wounded side.

One white chicken, and one black chicken eating

I am treating her and she is still hanging out in her old house and being visited by the barn chickens who just eat her food; cupboard love.

Glasshouse

Small red tomato and glass house

Every few days I get to pick a little red tomato, which I pop straight into my mouth and eat in the glass house. It is a little explosion of taste on the tongue. A tiny summer. Delicious.

Tomatoes are self-pollinated, by vibration, so I am often found in the Glasshouse, making like a bumble bee and gently shaking the vines, which is quite funny. I have a fan in there too which brings a breeze. Even with all this the set is quite low. Lack of sun I think.

Kale seedlings in Glasshouse

The glass house is coming along nicely this winter, though like I say, for the last, I don’t know, four or five days there’s been so little sun – just heavy, thick grey cloud.

I will start pricking out all these seedlings as soon as they have grown four leaves. They will be replanted all over the glasshouse. More greens. More better!

Now to work!

I need to get out there in the uncanny stillness and low cloud. Get the animals fed then back in to write. We took my MiL to visit her son on his farm in Missouri. (His wife is a wonderful home cook and has taken on the task of feeding her up) which means I have an extra three or four hours a day to write.

Take care. Talk soon.

  1. Tomatoes in Winter, what a treat! Funny Freebee, l wouldn’t mind spending two days in bed in this cold weather! Good news re your MiL, hope this arrangement lasts for a while to give you more writing time (and a little more relaxing time! Ha ha)!

  2. Clearly FreeBee is going to need woolen stockings and mittens and a warm coat for the cold weather. He made that very clear didn’t he?

Glad to hear that you have the gift of some extra free time for a bit!

  3. Morning Celi, I always love the Farmy n the updates!! I think Freebie needs some knee high boots!! And poor little White Chick.
She needs Nanny Boo!! At least we don’t have the horrible floods like I WA state. Glad to hear Mama is on a getaway with her son. 💕 Enjoyed the posts lately but health issues get in the way sometimes.
    Have a good day!!

  4. Good evening, c. Oh the pleasure of popping a tomato from its vine straight into one’s mouth. Is there anything quite so satisfying – well yes, maybe, but it’s a close second. 😊

  5. Fabulous weather for the pigs and Quacker!
Lovely looking tomatoes too. I’m getting mine from a huge organic glasshouse called Thanet Earth and they are relatively cheap!

  6. I love the idea that you can walk into your greenhouse and pop a beautiful red Vitamin C ‘pill’, so much nicer than the alternative. I hope chookie recovers, she’s getting the best care.
