The Storm arrived …

And today is not going to be pleasant. Since I woke up this morning (at 5am) to start my writing (for the Sustainable Sunday Letter) we have had snow, sleet, rain and very strong easterly winds.

This image, below is called ‘Through the Glass Easterly.”

Ice in window
Through Mr Flowers’ east facing window

They call it a wintry mix. Which sounds like a bag of Lollies but it is not. It is a pick and mix of pure nastiness.

Plus the Easterly flies right in through the door I leave slightly open for the big pigs to go outside to the toilet. This is not negotiable. If they even think about pooping inside they will keep going where the smell is, so they have to be able to get outside.

This door opens to the South. FreeBees favourite.

Shortly I will struggle through the icy rain and feed them all. ( They have a bucket of strawberries from the restaurant which will cheer everyone up).

Not Tima because ALL she is getting is strawberries. I will have to let FreeBee into the barn hallway to eat so Jude does not steal his food. The wind and icy rain make feeding outside (in the field) difficult to impossible.

Mr Flowers and his good friend Quacker (yesterday)

The change is profound.

Though it will warm up yet again before the cold comes. If the cold even comes.

The tree in snow

As per usual the dramatic cold they are forecasting is slowly leaching back to being ordinary cold. I wish they did not weaponise the weather forecast by casting it in such life threatening terms.

We are used to snow out here. Storms are not unusual. Sub zero temperatures are familiar. It is the LACK of these things that needs reporting.

Anyway.

Off I go.

Watch out for your evening letter tomorrow.

Take care. Talk soon.

  1. I used to live in western PA and we had some harsh winters. I called that season a Severe Beauty, when we had to wear scarves across our faces but the glittering diamonds in snow in low temps were incredible. I appreciate your sharing and perspective on that severe beauty. ❤ Those dear animals seem to take the edge off, don't they? 🙂 I hope your day goes well!

    • So far so good!! It is just windy rain now. I actually don’t mind the sever weather – like you saw there is beauty in it. I also like the challenge of surviving in it. Out in this little house in the middle of the vast prairie.

  2. All weathers at once! I completely agree about the rediculous weaponising of weather and many other things in the news. They have all descended to a level of shock, horror and salacious gossip for eerything.
I love the picture of the barn, sun and sky. I can’t decide if that’s a tube cloud or streak of ice on the window. Beautiful none the less!

  3. Thank you so much, l now have a wonderful screen saver of Mr Flowers and Quackers.
How you cope in this weather, l can’t imagine.

  4. I will hope for a quick turn around. We get 3 days of below freezing temps but the snow and other precip missed us. I bet FreeBee and everyone else would love some warm bread later today💕

  5. We’re looking forward to a low of 3 and a high of 8 on Tuesday. We’ll see how that plays out. Rain here, forecast for most of today.

  6. I am NOT looking forward to the bitter cold. I will stay inside where it is warm and dry with a mug of hot coffee and a good book or some knitting. It is infinitely better here in north central Indiana than it ever was on that blasted hill in Chicago where as soon as it was cold enough for ice to stay on the pavement you were trapped because there was no vehicle that could get up the icy hill. Lot of good things to be said about level gravel driveways. Stay warm and dry.

  7. Right this minute we are under a blizzard warning. Part of the driveway is bare, part is knee deep. It’s not nice outside, not nice at all. The little old man dog elects for a speed pee not too far from the door. Feed time was unpleasant – wind driven snow = dripping wet face. Sunday’s high should be 5*, not nice.

  8. That sounds hard, and harsh. I’m feeling glum because we’re on our 12th day straight of thunderstorms, the backyard is a swamp and I have very few places I can safely put the chooks out or they’ll dig their way to China and leave huge muddy craters. Steamy heat and doing everything in gumboots. Luckily Higgins is totally unbothered by the thunder and lightning, only concerned because I won’t walk him when there’s active lightning. I hope your weather eases into something more human/animal friendly soon…
