No one is going anywhere today at least until it warms up a bit. Everything is still covered in ice – but the temps are rising today!
So far we have rain on ice. Just above freezing.
Solid ice with a layer of running water on top.
The conditions are officially treacherous.
Quacker is thrilled!
The rest of us will wait for the thaw to be thrilled.
And we are all getting a rough round the edges now. From being locked in. I am feeling a bit explosive – having to work out in this horrible weather while others sit by the fire and scroll through screens for hours at a time makes me crazy.
The barn is my happy place I am so much happier that it is warming up. And I can be outside for longer. And that is preferable.
Though getting out to the barn carrying buckets is going to be a marathon this morning.
I will get the chores done before publishing so I can report on conditions: Stand By.

The ice is AWFUL! But it is beginning to melt. As long as I stuck to the slushy snow areas I was ok. If I had to skate across the ice I used a full bucket as a crutch. It worked!

Me too, Mad. I thought “a Quacker kinda Day.” before I got to Celi’s sentence about her. We’re all a Winner sometime.

She is very noisy with delight! That duck hated her feet being cold.

My thoughts are running to the hope that the temps stay up enough tonight that there is no refreeze and more melting can occur…fingers crossed.

I am quite safe. I actually trained in stage combat so I fall really well!!
Celi do you wear ice cleats on your boots? We wear them whenever we go walking in the winter. If you don’t have them you should!
I do have them – I need to dig them out. But I keep thinking – this must be the last of it! And I quite like the skating feeling. Weird right?

well at least we both know what hospital that will be! I am hoping it is all slush by tomorrow.
I hate walking on ice, but as you mentioned, there are strategies to it. When I worked, I often went “off roading” in the grass rather than on the icy pavement. That is a beautiful pig.
You are right! The areas that have not been packed down by my previous footsteps is often not as slippery. That pig is Tima The Bad. She is such an entertaining pig!

I say we let M learn about Tima and her not so spotless reputation slowly, although M has a cat that may rival Tima in the mischievous category.
I don’t know if I’ve ever told you this, Deb, but my late husband grew up on his single mother’s small farm; as the youngest child, he ended up doing a lot of the chores since his older siblings had let home. For some reason I can’t remember, he hated dealing with the pigs. I wish I could ask him about it. One of his first jobs was as a chicken chaser for a poultry company. He had some funny stories. (and not so funny ones)
No, I don’t think I knew that story. Celi has 4 pigs as you will find out, all with their own personalities, some have bigger personalities than others. If you can you should go back in her archives and read about Sheila. A very special pig.

They are not really paths. Just tracks through the fields. It will be fine. I hope Ton is careful too – he has four feet though which is helpful.
Tima is an entertaining gal. And so is Quacker, an entertaining duck. And I agree: watching someone sitting by the fire idle while you work your ass off–it ain’t fun. Maddening, is what.
I try to be kind. But I think many working women with retired husbands have the same problem. Plus I think I am going a bit stir crazy with the cold keeping me inside. I am not good in a cage.
It’s maddening too that I can’t be one person on both my emails. I can’t write to you on this website, but can say something on the other one. Word Press just won’t let me be me. Take Ten is on my other email. Go figure. I can’t.

Absolutely hate water on ice. I find the older I get the greater my fear of falling is. The ground just seems to be harder and I would be up the creek without a paddle if I got injured! I use the wood ash both for myself and the horses. I don’t want to use salt by them and I don’t want them to fall. Personally, I’ve had enough of winter – not that it makes any difference.
I do hope you get a thaw. It’s warmed here, but rain is constant, and that means I share your frustrations. There’s no varnishing boats in the rain. Of course, I don’t need to skid down the docks, either, so there’s that. I know you’re careful, but be careful. When things happen, they happen fast.
You are right. They do happen fast! Now the ice is under a couple of inches of rain in some areas.It is diabolical. However – there is always a way around!
