How’s your Fake Spring?

Ours is great. I am even thinking of buying my yearly supply of clothes pegs for the clothesline! Where do all those pegs disappear to!?

FreeBee is so much happier with a warmer day.

This is how BooBoo breaks up cock-fights.

Because he is not allowed to bite the roosters, he runs towards them and glares them apart. If they don’t listen he runs towards them again and pokes them with his nose like a dolphin. Bouncing them apart. None of his efforts are successful in the long run. The big birds just run around the corner and begin again. It is the time of year for rooster fights.

The glass-house is coming into its own. The sun is shining full through the windows in these last few days and with no leaves on the trees there is enough sun to haul up the greens and ripen the tomatoes.

Good morning. Don’t be tricked. Winter will be back – it is still only February you know.

But already we are thinking about the kitchens summer garden.

Because life without hope just does not work.

Have a lovely day.

  1. That glasshouse alone must keep your optimism alive – ripening tomatoes in February, what a sight! Love seeing the baby tomato starts too – I have to hold off on starting any until we return (right at the equinox) from a trip to see family in Istanbul.

  2. I think we are all happier with warmer days! Boo knows his job and purpose and does it so well. I hear we are getting 2-3 feet of snow in the mountains over the weekend so that means your winter will be back next week for sure.

  3. It has been quite warm here – my broad beans have started to flower and I’m thinking I need to germinate some carrots and tomatoes. I know it’s February this week, but March will be here on Friday!

  4. False spring, yes indeed. I have to keep reminding myself that yes, it is still February and “reliable spring” really won’t get here until mid to late March. In the meantime I am getting in lots of early weeding, pruning some shrubs, and cutting back perennial tops. Anything that I can get done in “false spring” doesn’t have to be done in April and May when EVERYTHING is calling (YELLING) for attention.

  5. we are having a period of rain day after day where l am in the UK. So much to do in the garden but no chance at the moment. Watching the grass getting longer and longer and the weeds growing more abundant. Baby toms in your green house, delicious. Clever and well trained Boo.

  6. Yes, yes, I’m trying not to jump into garden stuff too quickly. Yesterday afternoon I took my daily ‘little rest’ on the porch in the sun. Today it was too freakin’ cold out there and next week it should hit 60*. I guess I’d best not take the plow off the skid steer just yet…..

      • A few weeks ago we had a big one,, 18″ of wet heavy stuff so yeah, had to plow then and plowed once after that when we didn’t get much but it was wet & slushy so needed to get it off before it froze. Of course, during the big one one of the shoes came off the plow and I didn’t find it til weeks later when the stuff melted. Today it’s bright and sunny with a dusting of snow and it’s COLD!

  7. Thank you for the continued support and inspiration. Garden plots planned out in my notebook. Seeds and trays in hand. Ready, set, go.

  8. I’d give a lot for cold, sunny, dry weather. It’s hot, it rains constantly, my backyard is a swamp and the chooks are miserable. We’re coming into autumn and hopefully drier weather, but meanwhile, I need a ute-load of wood cheeps to keep the Girls’ feet out of the mud and stop the worms drowning.
