A Pumpkin a day keeps the Doctor Away

The cows are eating six or seven pumpkins a day. The pigs eat one between them. Even the chickens eat pumpkin!

But I think it might take a while to get through our huge load.

This image (below) was taken at the property of the boy down the road who grew and sold almost 5000 pumpkins this summer. With the help of his mother.

Mothers are often not mentioned as they toil away to support their kids.

I remember taking a project to school that mum had helped me with and the teacher wrote in the margins (great essay, tell your Mum she gets a B+).

(This is R taking a photo of all our hard work). My mother had to leave school at 14 to help her mother, they lived very rurally and moved often to follow her fathers work. (and they probably could not afford to board her anymore) she loved doing our homework with us!

Any rotting or split pumpkins go straight over the fence for the chickens.

We got a lot of rain yesterday. Then in the night the wind came up to blow it all away.

You can see the weather blowing in. (Above is to the east). (Below is looking West).

Good morning! I hope everything is good where you are. Or at least you can find pockets of goodness.

Have a lovely day!

  1. Well we get a “bomb cyclone” coming through tonight! Sounds ominous doesn’t it? It just means very low pressure at the coast with a LOT of wind coming from the east through our Cascade mountain passes and stirring everything up between. I think meteorologists love to cause drama. Lots of mountain snow as well. I see so many pumpkins sitting on porches still when I walk. I always wish you were with me- following in the truck- so we could scoop up a few here and there 😉

    • I did see that you have some serious weather heading your way Deb! Hopefully it won’t be too bad. Seems like folks around here have moved on from pumpkins to Christmas decorations. Even before Thanksgiving! But, it gives people joy, and we sure enough need that! 🙂

      • I passed one house that literally, the day after Halloween, had Christmas lights up and a large inflatable Santa standing in their yard! What can you do but just shake your head! Many people also combine their fall decor/pumpkins with Christmas decor. Keeps things interesting I guess 🙂

  2. Gorgeous pumpkins and gorgeous skies! We now have snow rolling in, ridiculously early this year. Stay safe and warm everyone🤞🏻

  3. Your photos are especially beautiful & atmospheric today, Celi, & your neighbors’- son & his Mom – pumpkins are wonderfully varied! I posted your colorful autumn leaves photo on my facebook page & credited you, & a link to this blog. Can you all see me twinkling gleaming across the ether? or hear me squeaking? I’ve had my first hot shower in the 53 days since Helene, our own hurricane bomb here in WNC. We finally got the all clean notice yesterday & no more need to boil our water here in Asheville. Calloo-Callay, O! Frabjous Day!!!

  4. Well, with all those pumpkins none of your animals will have worms! The dogs love cooked pumpkin too when their tummies are upset. They know what’s good for them. We are promised a week of rain, storms and flooding, and the farmers are racing to harvest as much of the remaining sugar cane as possible, as it will be sodden and lodged (bent over) after that. We badly need the rain, but storms and flooding are not the farmers’ friend.

  5. What a load of pumpkins! I’m sure our barnyard friends are feasting with a smile. We’ve been away, missed a nor-easter that weekend, too! Otherwise, typical fall weather for the coast, one doesn’t know what to wear from one day to the next—or even later the same day. Just got a gale warning from my weather app, something’s brewing.
