I can only write here – no pictures – it is time to move

I find myself at an interesting crossroads. WordPress has told me that I have used up all the image space available to me here – even on my premium plan. I would have to upgrade again to a business plan to add photos and this is not a business. I am paying to write here. But making no money here. So if I can’t post my pictures then I will no longer be posting here regularly. But fear not! We have the site next door up and running and ready for you.

At The Kitchens Garden Travels on SubStack – the platform that presently houses my Sunday Newsletter and my BedTime stories. More Links Below.

It is sad but necessary now and look how much data WordPress will be storing for us. 👇🏼

Since I first started this online farm journal in 2011 we have had:

  • 644,605 visitors
  • 3,339 posts
  • We now have 21,506 readers

No wonder this site, that was built for a small farm blog, is bursting at the seams.

All this data is stored. All the posts are stored, all the comments are stored, all the pictures are stored. All stored in the Jenga tower that is The original Kitchen’s Garden. And I don’t want to delete any of it to make room for more.

So, we are moving to SubStack to carry on the mission. You all know my other site and most of you visit regularly already. So I am confident.

This is a big move for us. To leave WordPress behind after all this time.

And I want you to come with me.

The Kitchen’s Garden Archives will remain here on WordPress in all their glory, safely (we hope), stored, I will continue to scour the old posts for recipes and stories and “how to’s” for the little ebooks. (Coming in 2026). And you can visit anytime.

So – my darling readers, my wonderful Fellowship, it is time to up sticks, pick up our cups of tea and wine glasses and stilletos and farm boots and toddle next door to where the show will go on.

And the show WILL go on – HERE at The Kitchen’s Garden Travels

Sign up. Subscribe. Upgrade if you have five dollars a month to spare. Though however you subscribe you will still receive The Kitchens Garden blog post straight to your inbox. And a big welcome!

Easy Peasy.

Going Forward

Going forward every other day I will write my blog/journal posts on SubStack with all the pictures. SubStack has all the bells and whistles of wordpress AND SOME. It is where my narrations are and where my newsletter is. It is where it is easy for you to comment and share. I have a chat thread there. And it is FREE. So. Look for me THERE. And Subscribe.

I think many of you have already subscribed over there. It is FREE for you to read and comment. There is an upgrade option if you choose to go to the next level of support, the funds go to planting trees and feeding our pet pigs in Illinois, and a little to support my writing. My posts are free to read. So far I do have a number of paid subscribers over on SubStack and these special souls are enabling me to spend a few hours a day on writing and narrating. I am truly honored by those who have chosen to support my endeavours financially.

At $5 a month I think it is worth it.

BEDTIME STORIES

Over at SubStack I read the classics to you. For half an hour three times a week. This is a wonderful space listen and relax. Turn your mind off from the hurly burly for half an hour. I have a page just for the current story that I add to through the week.

JOURNAL

I write about gardening, sustainable living, living softly on this good earth, frugal kitchens and kitchens gardens. The farm gardens, city gardening and the even some granny nanny tales. Sometimes I even tell stories. I will still take you on my travels. All the usual stuff will be there now. With pictures!

I intend to up my game next door at SubStack and post EVERY OTHER DAY with just the usual stuff we have been talking about over the years and new stuff as it comes up. The Fellowship is still be alive and well. That is you.

THE TKG SUNDAY NEWSLETTER

The Sunday newsletter is a round up of the week and of my own reading that week and is always a good read. The Sunday newsletter will also have a recipe a week and Nanny Granny news. Plus this on how to design a sustainable home that lives as lightly as possible on our gentle planet.

ELEGANT FRUGAL KITCHEN

We have a new section in the pages next door where I bring back the food and the frugal kitchen tips because – YES – frugal can be elegant. I have been making a ton of cookies for the pregnant daughter. We have a lot of new readers there too so I am sharing all those wonderful old recipes as well as the new ones.

The recipe of the week will be in the Sunday newsletter.

ARCHIVES

Our journey through the TKG archives will resume over there too. As long as the interwebs are stable we can all access the archives of The Kitchens Garden. Though to keep its format I need to keep paying the premium.

I will definitely pop in here (back to wordpress with no pictures 😂) a couple of times a week to remind you to follow me with links etc until we have all migrated. Feel free to unsubscribe here once you have subscribed over there so you don’t get double emails.

This feels like a similar move we attempted a couple of years ago that failed due to dubious programming. Right? Yeah. Remember that? That was a savage learning experience.

However I have been writing next door on SubStack for almost two years now and it is strong and well managed and infinitely accessible – in fact many of you have been popping in and out of both platforms for some time now.

And many have noted that it is easier to comment over there. Picture are a ton of really good writers there that I follow and read too.

WordPress might be pushing us out but SubStack is inviting us in.

I will write another post for you right here in a few days and tell you any tricks and tips I have learned about navigating Substack. It is intuitive. You will be fine. I will be there.

And all the current and developing pictures from my travels and from the farm and from my compact kitchens garden will be there from now on. Starting tomorrow.

On SubStack.

THE KITCHEN’S GARDEN TRAVELS

Tomorrow. Come on in! The waters fine!

Talk soon. See you there Tomorrow!

  1. I’m so glad you are leaving WordPress. It hasn’t let me comment on your WP site for several years now [wont recognise my password or let me reset it], whereas Substack is easy.

I too left WordPress for Substack and it was easy. Do you realise you can import your whole list into Substack? I brought about 950 subscribers with me.

Good luck with the move, Juliet

  2. I will soon be in the same situation as you with using up my WordPress allotment. I really do need to investigate options. I just really dislike change since I don’t consider myself super tech savvy. If only the computer science son lived closer…and not so far away in Boston.
