Treasures from California

Before I take you outside for an inspection of the Farmy, I want to show you a treasure I found in California. A beautiful girl took me to a Fantastic Second Hand Shop, I think it was called a Consignment Store. Look what we found:

I used to use one in Italy when I worked over there but Lost it somewhere along the way.  It just fell through the cracks of time.

And just when I need a real Parmesan Grater for my own Parmesan cheese, one turns up on a dusty shelf behind all kinds of junk in the shop of my dreams!  Like my well worn Italian one,  it has a little drawer and is perfect.

I brought a little cheese out from the cheese cupboard to show you.  We found this big white bowl  in the same store too.

How about that for pretty!

Now there is one other treasure that I found in California but you and John will have to wait to see them. Third son is going to ship them to me.  Fingers crossed!

  1. Wow, talk about fantastic finds. The grater is beautiful, with such a perfect built-in history and patina; how could anyone *not* want to hold and use that beauty! I think it’s karmic that a maker of home-crafted parm laid hold of that gem. Now I’ll look forward to learning about the cheese making!

    • I know.. how ironic is that.. now if i could just drive down the road and someone puts out a shiny portable milking machine with a for sale or free sign! c

  2. I’ve seen modern graters that have a catch tray but they just don’t look as nice as what you’ve found. But I’m more impressed by the fact that you’re making your own cheeses, amazing!

      • I thought of that also! 🙂 The not having the grater would be the stickler. So if you or any of your readers have an idea where to find a grater or something that would work almost as well drop me a note. It is always good to find something useful to make.

  3. Little treasures that are found in unexpected places are extra special. This was a “meant to be” find and I’m so happy that it is going to a loving home.

  4. Oh you lucky girl! I love shopping flea markets, garage sales and antiques to find the perfect little treasure! I remember seeing that my mom had something similiar to that, different shape but with a drawer. After she passed my father cleared everything out before I could realize what I would want to cherish since I was 16 at the time and not into all the kitchen gadgetry.

    • I had a similiar experience except I was 24 when my mum died .. i still think of her kitchen pans!! cast iron muffin tins, and jem tins.. pie dishes.. oh don’t get me started! c

  5. Would you be so kind as to cast some of your luck to the wind, cecilia? Just a pinch? And when it’s blowing my way? I’d be so very grateful to you.

Congratulations on your find! I love the ones that make me yelp with delight.

    • That is exactly the question my son asked me.. It will never be a sterile implement that is for sure. I cleaned it initially with water and soap and a brush, but the wood will not take that too often, i think it will be the kind of implement that is as clean as the cheese that will be constantly going through it….plus at the moment it is living in the fridge with the cheese.. c

  6. I always trawling the second hand shops and have never seen a cheese grater like this one. It really is quite a find! Now that I know they even exist I’m going to keep my eyes open for one! Can’t wait to see you blog your cheese:)
