“There is a dusting of snow.” Our John said, as he brought me my coffee at 5.30 this morning. By 6 am I was out in the barn, feeding out. By 7.am I was standing in the yards, listening to the chomp of cows, feeling the calm, watching the light rise. Not a sun rise more of a gradual lightening of a heavy steel sky. A steaming of cold light.
There was just a dusting of snow frozen to the ground. The footsteps of the dogs and I, as we began our walk, were as loud as the world. The only sounds in the clear cold hush. Except for a bleating Mia. “Where’s mine? Where’s mine?”.
The birds woke and still there was no sun, only milky light. So they shuffled, quiet as we walked by.
Just a dusting of snow. A tickle without a laugh. A nod from the corner of winters eye.

I loved this – you write beautifully. This brought back memories from my days in the north (Michigan) and those lovely early frosty mornings; the special sounds and sights. Your pictures are beautiful. Thanks for sharing!
Lois
Morning Lois! It is beautiful out here this morning. Thank you so much for dropping in!! c
Your footsteps were as loud as the world! What a beautiful world. You get so much meaning out of so few words.
Ronnie
Thank you Ronnie. This morning it was easy to write.. c
How lovely! Lois’ post reminded me of a Christmas in Okemos – we sat in the hot tub, at night, as the snow fell 😉
That would be amazing, sitting in a hot tub in the snow! Wild. c
For a moment I really felt like I was there with you seeing the cows and birds, hearing the footsteps and Mia, in the calm, in the dawn, with the dusting of snow. Thanks for taking me into your world this morning. It was a lovely way for me to start my day, too.
You are very very welcome, I hope you are having a great morning.. c
Oh that’s just beautiful! Good morning:)
Good morning to you too Saffie.. c
Great post, Celi. I love being in the country the morning of a snowfall. We’re having the same dusting, though perhaps because I’m nearer the Lake, our flakes are gigantic! Still not ripe enough for eating but, at this rate, January’s crop should arrive on time and be very filling.
I read this to John, and he had a laugh.. he loves your comments too! and yes i feel a gathering, we are being kept on tenterhooks this winter, waiting for it to really begin!
Just lovely…nothing like the silence that comes with a snowfall, no matter how light.
It is a dense silence isn’t it..c
I love your posts. I grew up on a farm in western Kentucky but have since moved away. Your posts and pictures are a wonderful reminder of home. Thanks!
You are welcome Anna, I have never been to Kentucky I must look it up! c

Thank you Anna, I would love that. c
I love the crunching, squeaking sounds that come from walking on snow.

Thank you Neil, when i shoot the plants I often think of your compositions! How is your new house? c
This is crazy beautiful. I want to frame it. Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful!
You can print it and frame it, I don’t mind, just sign my name for me, with the date in pencil on the right hand corner of the mat and write the blog name on the back!! that will be fine! celi
Fooey to snow! Yes, it is pretty but it’s cold and makes driving a pain! Bah humbug! We had a light dusting this morning too. DH asked what did your cows think about snow. t
the cows and sheep just stand in it, the sheep look particularly silly with a light dusting of snow on their wooly backs..!
What a perfect way to wake up in the morning, away from the concrete jungle 🙂 love it!
Absolutely, no concrete jungle for me!! c
I sure would love that, just nature 🙂
How beautiful pictures! You are so lucky to have snow, it’s so pretty and white. Well, lets just hope there will be some snow here in Norway soon also 🙂
