A Dusting of Snow on the Farmy – morning.

“There is a dusting of snow.” Our John said, as he brought me my coffee at 5.30 this morning.  By 6 am I was out in the barn, feeding out. By 7.am I was standing in the yards, listening to the chomp of cows, feeling the calm, watching the light rise. Not a sun rise more of a gradual lightening of a heavy steel  sky.  A steaming of cold light.

There was just a dusting of snow  frozen to the ground. The footsteps of the dogs and I, as we began  our walk, were as loud as the world.  The only sounds in the clear cold hush. Except for a bleating Mia.  “Where’s mine? Where’s mine?”.

“Shh, Mia, we are listening.”

The birds woke and still there was no sun, only milky light. So they shuffled, quiet as we walked by.

Just a dusting of snow. A tickle without a laugh. A  nod from the corner of winters eye.

  1. I loved this – you write beautifully. This brought back memories from my days in the north (Michigan) and those lovely early frosty mornings; the special sounds and sights. Your pictures are beautiful. Thanks for sharing!

  2. Your footsteps were as loud as the world! What a beautiful world. You get so much meaning out of so few words.

  3. For a moment I really felt like I was there with you seeing the cows and birds, hearing the footsteps and Mia, in the calm, in the dawn, with the dusting of snow. Thanks for taking me into your world this morning. It was a lovely way for me to start my day, too.

  4. Great post, Celi. I love being in the country the morning of a snowfall. We’re having the same dusting, though perhaps because I’m nearer the Lake, our flakes are gigantic! Still not ripe enough for eating but, at this rate, January’s crop should arrive on time and be very filling.

    • I read this to John, and he had a laugh.. he loves your comments too! and yes i feel a gathering, we are being kept on tenterhooks this winter, waiting for it to really begin!

    • You can print it and frame it, I don’t mind, just sign my name for me, with the date in pencil on the right hand corner of the mat and write the blog name on the back!! that will be fine! celi

  5. How beautiful pictures! You are so lucky to have snow, it’s so pretty and white. Well, lets just hope there will be some snow here in Norway soon also 🙂
