‘Success is the ability to go from one failure..

… to another failure, with no loss of enthusiasm’. Winston Churchill.

I love that one, it describes us all so perfectly.  It certainly describes this cheese as it proceeds with its  metamorphosis from cheddar to puddle. Ah well.

Churchill also said something about ‘success not being final and failure not being fatal.’   But that one is too grim for us. I like the slightly jolly edge to the image of collapsing from one failure to another with more grin than grim.

If you butter the end of this date and muesli loaf  sweetened with golden syrup, BEFORE you cut it, then kind of mush all the crumbs together and pop them in your mouth very quickly it is a success!  The golden syrup was bought for me by my personal shopper at an importers warehouse open day. He knows where all the right places are. Thank you ChgJohn.  Almost all Mum’s baked goods have golden syrup in the recipes and no substitute tasted right.

We had rain. Sheila was thrilled. The chooks spent the day inside,  they did not want to get their feathers damp!

I cannot creep up on any animal with my camera because TonTon intuits which animal I am going to see, rushing to them, then he goes down and stares waiting for a command, they see him, then lumber up onto their feet to see if they can see me. Wherever he is there is me. No surprises.

Though for the first time I was able to sneak up on Ton as he guarded my shoes whilst completely asleep. No sense of failure for these guys. Imagine being able to live completely in the moment. Without guilt, or regret or sorrow. Just sleep or munch or watch. Or a mixture of the three.

Good morning. It rained all night as well. A good soaking rain for hours. We had had half an inch when I went to bed so it was a decent drop. The rain came straight down so I was able to leave all the doors and windows open to the sound of it.  There will be fog this morning.  The sun will have a sleep in.

Today I start research into local architects who also built for the prairies. Frank Lloyd Wright being top of the list.  E. Fay Jones and Ida Ryan for their use of open space and light.  Though a lot of their work was commercial I think.  It is hard to find a prairie architect not influenced by Wright.  But I am going to rummage about and have a look.

Have a lovely day.

P.S. On this day last year I made tomato chutney. In fact I am making another little batch today. This blog journal thing is so useful!

    • Aren’t they all looking healthy, they have been brought up into the home fields because of the lack of feed down the back, it is nice to have them close again for a bit.. c

  1. Hi ceciliag, I wanted to thank you for stopping by my farm blog. You have a great blog here, love the way you have with words. I have looked around a bit and you are also a very good photographer too and have lovely farm.

I too have always been a fan of Frank Llyod Wright architecture, he has built several homes and buildings here in the Chicago area. My favorite style of his was the prarie style.
With those big overhangs it helped to keep the home cooler in the summer when the sun his higher in the sky and warmer in the winter with the way windows placed so when the sun is much lower in the sky allowd for passive solar heat. I hope to do the same thing when I build my pole barn house on our farm.

    • You are thinking exactly as i am gordon and you have said it so well i shall use your words when trying to explain it to the builder. i did this already with a verandah i added to this little house, it is shady in summer and in winter allows the sun right into the house. A pole house sounds awesome I would love to know more about that! c

  2. Sad that the cheese didn’t turn out! Hopefully one of the farmy animals can enjoy it. Love the picture of TonTon sleeping by your shoes…I do envy their life in the moment! 🙂

  3. What a perfect quote to live by! Sweet TonTon, just look at that boy guarding those shoes…his work is never done. We have a Wright Usonian house in my home town. I love the way his structures integrate to become part of the landscape. In this house, which was one of very few he built in this style and for an everyday family, everything was built on a grid, all designed to maximize functional space and very Japanese in style. One of the things I found remarkable was the use of hallway space as storage. The walls were boards on the grid, but were actually hatches that concealed storage space like on a ship. Whole sections floor to ceiling were made this way. Here are some pics of the house, unfortunately none show the hallways because they were/are narrow, and you can find more info on the web if you’re interested. You can also see how he used the bookshelves in the living room and study in somewhat the same manner. http://www.florenceal.org/Community_Arts/Art_Museums/Art_Galleries_Museums/Frank_Lloyd_Wright/index.html

  4. I adore classical music. I am mad for opera. I love Willie Nelson. But the best music of all is the sound of rain on the roof while you drifting off to sleep. Have a wonderful day Celia. Hugs Virginia

  5. How wonderful to have the rain! I’m sure the prairies experienced a little bounce back in the refreshment. It’s going to be so enjoyable to follow your architectural search and the resulting outgrowth. Such a worthy project! 🙂 Sorry about the cheese, but Sir Winston had it right…and the loaf looks oh so good! Beautiful day to you, Celi. Debra

  6. Shucks, Miss C. Twas’t nuttin. Glad to be of help.
We got over 4 inches of rain from the storm system and the today started with a freshness we’d been missing for much of Summer. So, your asst is a bit too smart for your photography’s good, eh? With not a word, at least 3 species are in communication. Incredible! Sorry about the cheddar but at least you’ve a nice loaf to enjoy. Have a great day!

  7. Hey Celi! Just beginning to catch up around here. We had a wee rain last night and are hoping for more as the hurricane looks to be heading for New Orleans and hopefully beyond…..to us! Fortunately it’s only rated as a 1 on the hurricane scale, and not 5 at Katrina was. Just some long, gentle rain is all we want…..quite a request this dry summer…..with no damage to anyone or thing along the way. A big request, I know! Happy Monday! xo
