The precious light of dawn

It appears that against my will I am being carefully and inexorably towed out by the tide of an ebbing summer, back into the dark mornings. The brightness of summer is leaving me.  Too soon. Too soon. The sunrise is only at the strength of a whisper as I carry my buckets of warm water out to the barn to start milking.

Look at all this rain we had by light yesterday morning.

And it is warm, and humid. So the grass is growing. Wonderful rainfall. Now that the  weather has settled again, today I shall place the maze under the final honey super and gather the last of the honey tomorrow.

Daisy and Queenie will be quartered in the yards for a few days until the ground is harder again. I don’t want them tramping the growing grass into mud. Suffice to say, Daisy is Not Amused.

Good morning. I hope you are all well and toddling along. It seems our late summer quiet has gone down a stop. Into a pregnant pause. Something is coming.

I dreamt of crossing the ocean from island to island on string bridges.  The whole of the sky was strung with shiny wires, bridges attached, people rushing to and fro along their walkways carrying their baggage. Everyone dressed in the travelling style of the late forties. Seagulls perched on the wires watching. It was a beautiful day and we were grateful there was no wind.

We all had personal string bridges that we whipped across to a wire,  like you flick a wet dishcloth at legs and it secured, with a hook on contact to the wires of our choice, this was a learned skill, I was good at it, after years of practise. As our bridge settled on we rushed. All hurry – hurry.  My swing bridge was old and a few of the wooden slats were broken  leaving gaps but it was serviceable for my little group if you were careful.

So waking to the dense quiet of the morning is such a relief. No hurry. Just get all the chores done before the school run. Plenty of time.

Have a lovely day. Watch your step.

On this day a year ago. My grandmother made rabbit stew. If you have time for a short read, this is one of The Stories. I really like this one and once I work on the description of this glorious South Island summer I will like it even better.

  1. There always feels like a chill in the air here, the day after the August bank holiday (today). I do hope we get and Indian summer here, the real thing was very damp 😉

  2. Yearning for summer here …. 42 mm rain would be a good start. Best picture of the barn yet. I believe we are all connected by string bridges one way or another. Laura

  3. Goodness, that’s one complex dream and I’m sure someone could read all kinds of into it! Perhaps it was sparked off by your building plans for the wee house. Perhaps all those tenuous bridges signify your daily balancing act between all your chores and challenges. No wonder morning’s arrival was a relief! Have a peaceful day.

  4. We are indeed losing the light. Just about 6:30 last night, Angel stood on the back porch with me and said, “Why is it so DARK, Grandmom?” Puts a whole new spin on Raging Against the Dying of the Light…
    Have a good day, C!

  5. I could write that story, your dream. It would be quite an interesting adventure. I think I like your dreams a lot – full of mystery, with open endings. People scattering about, no clear direction. All flee and no stay. Seems like there could be one person there, watching them flitter about like bees, who thinks, perhaps, they could build cities over the ocean, perhaps in the sky, and could scatter less.

I’ll have to think about that (unless you write your own dream stories). I’ve been thinking of turning individual dreams into short stories for my collection. Your dreams are always welcome.

    • There are lots of bones in rabbit stew. There were a lot of very determined travelers in my dream, you could join, I saw no bags on wheels though, that would be noisy maybe!

  6. what a beautiful amount of rain you had C! The only thing that gives me comfort about your Autumn is my Spring. I cannot wait for the warm weather and getting up when it is light.
    Have a lovely farmy day.

    • Iy seems to have all gone very fast, but i guess summer goes fast but winter just drags its heels.. the light though is not influenced by the weather.. luckily.. c

  7. For me, September and October have some of the best weather of the year but, as you noted, the loss of sunlight is ever more noticeable. There’s just no escaping Winter’s approach. Sure is good to see that rain gauge of yours. The remnants of Isaac may get here by Friday. Surely another good soaking will be a big help.
It’s back to Wrigley for another Cubs game tonight. Hope you have a great day, Celi!

    • I do hope so. Finally my fields are growing, I would love to have a few good months .. fingers crossed. AND fingers crossed for a little more rain this weekend, though I hope it does not do damage on the way here.. have a lovely evening at the park. It should be just beautiful.. c

  8. good morning C. I fell in love with your dim morning view. Something so tranquil, quiet and calming, like getting up early before anyone else and tiptoeing around so I can just have some time for myself!
