Green Tomato Pie

You didn’t see that coming did you.  Nor did I, especially after yesterday.  Your comments from yesterday impressed on me once again that we all have such a lot on common. All living in our different worlds but dealing with so much that we can  talk about together. Thank you.

Anyway back to the Green Tomato Pie. The other day the Old Codger asked me if I knew how to make Green Tomato Pie. To tell the truth I had never even heard of Green Tomato Pie.   In fact until I came to the US I never heard of green tomato anything, let alone a sweet pie.

The next time I came to visit Dale he had found the recipe in an old old cook book. The book was open at the pie page ready for perusal.  He pointed out the recipe and with sparkling eyes wondered if I might like to try to make it.  So I did.

Basically you slice  4 green tomatoes very thinly, toss them in a little flour. Then add a cup of sugar, a little lemon juice and a wee bit of zest, a little cider vinegar, cinnamon, ginger and 3/4 cup of raisins. Layer these in your pastry and cook in a hot oven for about 40 minutes.

The old trick that I had never seen before was breadcrumbs sprinkled on the pastry first, presumably to soak up some of the juices. It worked, as the pastry stayed light and crunchy.  It passed the Old Codger taste test.

Dale really enjoyed it, warm from the oven. Next on the list to try is Dutch Apple Pie. He is looking up that recipe too. The man is a hard task master!

Good morning. I was woken this morning about 4am by the howling of coyotes. I usually get up about 4.30 so this was not too bad. I put on my old beaten up dressing gown and went outside to shout at them. The verandah is a natural megaphone and good for this task. I yelled at them to go home and go to bed and the group that was very close, presumably my usual pack, went immediately quiet. Then it became apparent there was another big pack to the West and another one to the North. All shrieking and barking and howling and caterwauling at each other.  The farmers have begun the harvest around here, ripping out the dog’s cover and they are being displaced, so the territory wars have begun again. I hope my pack is strong enough to keep the strangers out. At least my lot is trained.

I will increase our boundary walks to three times a day until the beans are out.  Also I shall dig out the sky rockets that I keep for this purpose. Wild dogs hate fire works. So for a while, every time I hear them, I shall shoot off a rocket and hope I don’t set fire to the fields.  The other thing I will do is start the radio going in the barn all night. No stock is in there but the animals are usually sleeping close by.  Hearing the human voice does help to keep wild animals at bay too.

Have a lovely day. Today I begin to prepare the finished gardens for the winter. I will do a garden a day for a while. The pigs will be happy!

  1. We hear the coyotes here and the kids worry a little when doing the evening milking but I told them they won’t come this close to the house especially with our dogs. I now have internet! Yippee! I’ll catch up with previous posts which I’ve missed and I hope to update my blog this week-end or the first of the week. The pie looks yummy. I think I’ll have to let the girls try to make it! Have a great day, Celi!

    • OH welcome back!! How exciting to be back in touch. Our John says the same thing, coyotes go after small, or very young animals, not tall beautiful milk maids. Tell the girls just to sing loudly, so your pack of coyotes get used to knowing that this is not their patch anymore! take care.. c

  2. Huh? This time a year ago you told the story of T learning to ride a bike ….. where I am it is still 21 September, its a good story too. Now about the Green Tomato Pie, trieing to figure out if it’s a lunch pie or a dessert? Good to hear news about Dale again, hope he is well? Has Mama been ‘daubed” and is Hairy smiling yet – had to ask? Laura

    • That is so funny! I had the wrong date in my head, i shall go back and amend that..hilarious.. no mama has not been daubed, usually they don’t get up to much before late october .. and he is still limping, i cannot work out why, now I shall pop back and fix my error! Dale is great. Thank you laura! c

  3. Oh my C, there is always so much that you have to take into account with farmy life – I would never have thought about the radio – what a clever idea.
Good on the old codger asking for what he wants – never heard of a green tomato pie either – sounds very interesting.
    Have a super weekend C.
    🙂 Mandy xo

  4. Reminds me of the book Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe by Fannie Flagg. I don’t even have any green tomatoes this year. Both plants turned their toes up with a mysterious virus, as did everyone’s in our village.

I was wondering how the Codger was. Glad to see he’s on good form.

  5. Eek, coyotes sound scary. I’ve only known green tomatoes to be used up in chutney but the Americans certainly seem to have a love affair with them. It sounds more like a recipe for a sweet pie though strangely which I didn’t expect. Go careful with those fireworks, I know you can get some good ones over in the States. 🙂

  6. I like green tomato anything (pickled especially), and I will have to try the pie. Years ago (before they were illegal) my dad used “bottle rockets” to ward off packs of domestic dogs. He taped a soda straw to the bottom of a coat hanger–and could aim it where he wanted–over the heads of the dogs of course. It worked well.

  7. C., your heart brims to overflowing with love. If only there were more of you to bake Green Tomato Pie, this world would be a much better, happier and content place.

I grew up eating green fried tomatoes, but did not have any this year. Love them sliced, coated in flour and fried in butter to dark golden brown, almost black, perfection.

The photo of Dale’s hand on the fork digging into the pie is terrific.

  8. Celi, I read yesterday’s beautiful and personal story so late at night my eyes were crossing and I couldn’t trust myself to comment with any degree of sensitivity. I was so moved by your recollections, and the circumstances. Your story wasn’t precisely mine, but it certainly mirrors so many young women, including a friend of mine who came to live with us while I was in high school so she could have her baby “away” from the prying eyes at home. I was so thrilled to come to your conclusion and be told that your baby will be with you on Sunday. I am thousands of miles away and yet I feel a very strong bond of joy in that. 🙂

Now green tomato pie. I love, love, love green tomato pie, and your recipe looks wonderful. I’ll save it! Our tomatoes were a grand disappointment this year. I’m in mourning. If only I had my usual glut of green tomatoes. Recipes save! Blessings on you for a delightful weekend. oxo

  9. I think the shot of Dale’s hand holding the fork would look great in Black and White. I’m so glad that I haven’t got to deal with coyotes. The firework trick sounds good – I haven’t ever met a dog that likes fireworks. Smart move:)
