I know some of you are expecting snow but we had hours and hours of rain yesterday and OH it was glorious.
Quiet, firm and even heavy at times. All the animals stood out in it.
I was milking an unrepentant, dripping wet cow.
The fields are waterlogged. The troughs are overflowing.
Just lovely. Though I cannot stand the waterbarrels back up to save any as it is due to freeze again tomorrow. However, that water is soaking into our wonderful earth and will wait in there.
Of course this morning is windy and cold again but I will not be downhearted. Spring will come one day. It has to. And every little drop of rain that we store in the ground will contribute to grass growth. Though looking at the dead fields it is hard to imagine it all covered in clover and grass and alfalfa. But spring will come in a while.
Good morning. Yesterday the children and I milked the cow and gathered some eggs and made baked custard for lunch. They were thrilled. Today we are off to the junk yard again to look for glass for John’s recycled glass house soon to be built adjacent to the Coupe. Won’t that be a fine thing!
Have a lovely day.

Only farmers truly understand just what a blessing a good soaking rain is, especially after this drought that we seem to have a hard time breaking.
I am glad of your rain. The blizzard here is just beginning and we are in the possible 3 feet zone!!! Hunkered down with son and daughter in law and the two babies so son can help dad prevent the new greenhouse from collapsing from the weight of it all! He and my husband will be out plowing all night to stay ahead. I am secretly excited. Snowshoes are ready!
I have never even SEEN that much snow, I would be secretly excited too.. but three foot is a lot!.. c
Rain is a very good thing.
We are supposed to get rain this evening. And a huge dump of snow in the mountains tomorrow, then by Tuesday it leaves heading toward you. So far we have lovely sun and it’s warmer than usual. Which I’m not complaining about!

[…] The Kitchen Garden. A New Zealander that wound up in the midwest, somehow, and celebrates it (and life). Very cool! […]
Celi, be careful about the clover when it comes. When the spring rains came after our worst months of drought we had way too much clover and some of our neighbor’s cows died of bloat before he could intervene. Please be sure to buy some bloat blocks when it starts to pop up!!!

Thank you Andrea that would be horrible, our fields are tiny PLUS I electric fence.. bloat would be a terrible thing to happen, thank for the reminder i will be wary, and I am so looking forward to the spring!
Celi, that first photo is just magnificent! And I love your Kupa header! Stay warm, darling! Did you buy any of that fabulous Icebreaker clothing when you were in NZ? Pete and his brothers swear by it!
Shame you can’t store any of it…. I guess you’d need underground water stores, so the ice wouldn’t form on them?
We have more snow predicted for Sunday, at the moment.
Good morning, c, and all the farmy! I have a request, c. One day when you’re up to your nose in eggs, would you do a post on the proper method to steam eggs? Ta, darling.
Oh yes i shall, I do that all the time! I will make some asap.. we got 18 eggs yesterday! c.. c
Brill! 🙂
It’s been snowing like crazy since last night. We’re expecting about a foot today.
I love your photos of the rain. I feel drenched in the loveliest way.
It’s a happy rainy day for you – and a happy sunny day for us. How we glory in what we are missing. I found a few snow drops blooming in the sun. They were as happy as I am to see the sun. And I know how happy you are to have the glorious rain. I love the idea of the glass house. The sun will shine there through the winter months, the seedlings will have their own shelves and John will have his own chair. All will be right on The Farmy. Have a wonderful wet week-end Celi. V.
also we can open the door in the winter and let the warm from the glasshouse flow into the house, what an idea! c
I bet the children loved baked custard 🙂
I had to fight them for it! I love it too! c
Me three!
I love the top photo. Do you save the rainwater in barrels?
yes all summer we have barrels under the down spouts from the buildings, this water is used for the plants close by.. or dogs .. whatever comes first.. c
That rain looks wonderful, Celi- I’m assuming it’s very good for the farmy?
sometimes I wish the farmy was in the UK so we could get the rainfall you have, it has been a very dry winter, following that dry summer so the rain is wonderful! and now I must pop over and see how you are writing about.. c
