The Whisper of Spring’s Wing.

Yesterday I was working in the barn for a while then came back out into the air and there it was. Warmth. There was no sun, and I was surrounded in snow, yet somehow there was a warm cast to the air. Of course it made no sense to the senses but it was there.

Spring reached down from wherever she is waiting and brushed my face with her wing. uvw7-003

Us humans have a big job.  We have to take deep breaths of every offer and keep moving forward. uvw7-011

The animals in our care and the earth under our feet depend on our ability to Hope. To set goals and to work towards them knowing we can win. Down is not in the agenda. Hope must prevail. It is the only way. The warmth is coming.

Have you ever felt the tiniest rush of air as a wild bird darts past your face on the way to somewhere. You imagine that it was a wing you felt – they were that close, careening around. This happens often to me out here. This is what that whisper of spring felt like.

I love Sheila, did I tell you that already? uvw7-014

Am I turning into one of those conversation deprived women who tell you the same story thrice. About Sheila who runs back and forth, back and forth, when we are on our walks. Are you there miss c, do you need help miss c, are you lost miss c, watch out for that icy patch miss c, this way, this way. uvw7-026

When the recycled glass house is built there will be another roof line in this shot. It will be a wee while yet though.  I will show you, not to worry.

Kupa and his wives were out in the day too.

Good morning, I heard a rumour that there may be sun today.  I see a blush of pink on the horizon, so there must be some sky out there. It has been a while since we saw a sunrise. uvw7-046

Tulip bulbs, they have been knocked back numerous times in the last few weeks with the extreme cold smacking into the heels of spring. These bulbs can teach us a lesson in stoic determination as they reach up to their flowery goal, they bloom then load up with enough energy to do it again next year but producing more hope and more flowers. uvw7-047

I know it feels dark but Sun is coming!

I have put the girl band out into the salad-bar field.  They can hang out there for a while.  You will remember that all four of the little fields in this shot will be re-sown this spring. So I am not worried about the animals churning it up. In a few weeks it will be tilled and we will throw a Dairy Mistress mix of seeds into three of the fields. Radishes, chicory and oats into another for a quicker growing high protein munch.

There are plans afoot. It will be wildly busy when the soil has warmed. Not that it won’t be busy today too! (laughter)  Exciting.

You all have a lovely day.

  1. I love that expression plans a foot, the plans aren’t a head or hand, but a foot, and I suppose in your case the foot has boots or wellie on !
Morning Miss, Kupa’s feathers and snow make a magical mix

    • You have had a hard winter up there and i am looking forward to your first spring on your land.. i must pop over, i have been meaning to!! c

  2. Ah for the sight
    of spring, and sunrise
    that rings in new
    colours of light —
    so long, farewell
    to grey and all it’s
    gloomy shades.

Good morning, c, and cheery day to all.

  3. Love the idea of a salad-bar field. It’s so uplifting at this time of year to see even the teeniest signs of Spring isn’t it. Rainy, grey, grim here today -so glad I made the most of the sunshine earlier in the week to dig and plant.

    • This one has chives and parsley and garlic and mint in it, all kinds of good stuff, though I will have to restock it after the tilling, the animals take the chives out straight away, they love them! c

  4. Its been snowing here since Wednesday! Ten inches and more coming. Thanks for the hope! A whiff of spring would sure be welcome! Looking forward to seeing that glass house rise. Then you will have an oasis in the midst of winter!

      • The old timers call it “Poor Man’s Fertilizer.” Wondering if that is still true now. I don’t mind a snow day. It gives me a good excuse to stay in and bake. (Chocolate Lava Cakes for dessert, the grandchildren are coming over to keep me company. Bliss! Ever make them?) I am feeling sad though, for the folks at nearby Plum Island whose homes are falling into the sea today.

  5. The snow we had on Wednesday settled on the mountains and the sun rise this morning made them look so stunning! Yes the sun is out here today and I am off into my Green House to start planting some seeds. A friend of mine built me a large green house from old windows he collected during his contracting jobs. It’s one of my favorite places to be right now, and whilst the wind is howling around outside, me and the dogs are cozy and getting my hands dirty being my favorite job! Luckily the wind and sun has cleared the snow from around here, just need the ground to warm up a tad so I can get my potatoes in! Might just go and lay some black plastic on the plot to give it some encouragement.

    • I have collected old windows too, ours will not be big but it will be big enough i hope. What an excellent idea to cover the ground so that it can warm up, I have a huge old piece of red carpet that might just do the trick! Thank you for the idea Lyn.. c

  6. If nothing else your blog make me miss the farm days that I enjoyed for 5 years… just glad my lands and barns never turned that colour of white…
