The Whisper of Spring’s Wing.

Yesterday I was working in the barn for a while then came back out into the air and there it was. Warmth. There was no sun, and I was surrounded in snow, yet somehow there was a warm cast to the air. Of course it made no sense to the senses but it was there.

Spring reached down from wherever she is waiting and brushed my face with her wing. uvw7-003

Us humans have a big job.  We have to take deep breaths of every offer and keep moving forward. uvw7-011

The animals in our care and the earth under our feet depend on our ability to Hope. To set goals and to work towards them knowing we can win. Down is not in the agenda. Hope must prevail. It is the only way. The warmth is coming.

Have you ever felt the tiniest rush of air as a wild bird darts past your face on the way to somewhere. You imagine that it was a wing you felt – they were that close, careening around. This happens often to me out here. This is what that whisper of spring felt like.

I love Sheila, did I tell you that already? uvw7-014

Am I turning into one of those conversation deprived women who tell you the same story thrice. About Sheila who runs back and forth, back and forth, when we are on our walks. Are you there miss c, do you need help miss c, are you lost miss c, watch out for that icy patch miss c, this way, this way. uvw7-026

When the recycled glass house is built there will be another roof line in this shot. It will be a wee while yet though.  I will show you, not to worry.

Kupa and his wives were out in the day too.

Good morning, I heard a rumour that there may be sun today.  I see a blush of pink on the horizon, so there must be some sky out there. It has been a while since we saw a sunrise. uvw7-046

Tulip bulbs, they have been knocked back numerous times in the last few weeks with the extreme cold smacking into the heels of spring. These bulbs can teach us a lesson in stoic determination as they reach up to their flowery goal, they bloom then load up with enough energy to do it again next year but producing more hope and more flowers. uvw7-047

I know it feels dark but Sun is coming!

I have put the girl band out into the salad-bar field.  They can hang out there for a while.  You will remember that all four of the little fields in this shot will be re-sown this spring. So I am not worried about the animals churning it up. In a few weeks it will be tilled and we will throw a Dairy Mistress mix of seeds into three of the fields. Radishes, chicory and oats into another for a quicker growing high protein munch.

There are plans afoot. It will be wildly busy when the soil has warmed. Not that it won’t be busy today too! (laughter)  Exciting.

You all have a lovely day.

  1. That was what New Year’s day was like in OXON! I’m not surprised you feel excited. You should have seen me practically sprinting to the village in the gleeful warmth of that day. I’m so glad you felt the warmth today. 🙂

  2. Just beautiful writing today Cinders of the hope of spring!! “No winter lasts forever, no spring misses it’s turn”…I wish I’d written that! 🙂 And how lucky you are to have Shelia as a best friend!!

  3. Well, I certainly hope spring is coming, but now I’m beginning to wonder. We woke up to about 8 inches of new snow and right now we’ve received about 3 inches on top of that. Sometime, somewhere, we’re bound to see a bit of grass eventually…right? 😉

I love Sheila’s floppy ears and I am still in awe of Kupa every time he flaunts his tail feathers. I’m sure I’ve told you that before…which makes us both conversationally deprived I suppose. Ha!

Hope you get to see the sun today! ~ April

  4. It must be soo different for you living there than New Zealand – the season are so well seasons. Must be wonderful seeing the first hint of spring after the snow.
Keep warm – we are still having days on days of wonderful sunny days.
    Love Leanne

  5. Silly me, looking at the peahen and wondering where Kupa was. It was the Kupa curtain again! Trick photography, I tell ya. You make us love Sheila, too.

  6. That tiny breath of wind has made quite a poet out of you 🙂 ! ‘The Whisper of Spring’s Wing’ as a heading to welcome us and the talk of ‘salad bar fields’! As a babe born in northern climes my eyes however rather naturally travelled to those tulip bulbs fighting to begin the season: amongst my favourite flowers still . . hope you have had a happy day . . . .
