A Dandelion Walk and the Roof Shout

Blue the Mouth is big enough for the longer walks now, and like a child he needs a good solid walk each day, so TonTon and I took him on the Dandelion Walk to the bridge this morning.  We mow a little path through the wild grasses along the creek bank. Blue was excited on the way to the bridge and quiet and puffing on the way back and slept the rest of the morning. Perfect.

Walks work for us all in many ways.  You can see the farm right out in the background.

Today we have the roof shout. It is a tradition in New Zealand to shout the builders a few beers when the roof is finished. I have cooked one of our own beef roasts and today I will bake some bread and caramalise some onions. Then I will make roast beef sandwiches with lettuces and spring onions from the garden, home made mustard  and home grown horse-radish and the last of the neighbour’s pickles from last year because mine were such rubbish.

The fridge is filled with very cold beer and a few bottles of home made wine and cider.  I will drag chairs through the rubble of construction under the big tree and we will all sit down and admire our beautiful roof and talk about nothing terribly important at all.

Good morning.

I hope you all have a lovely day, I am up an hour early because there is just so much to do today  and I want to be done in time to sit down for a glass of something cold with the men too. As well as everything else, I am shifting the electric fence into the sheep’s paddock today. Those two naughty lambs will be doing their own version of walking the corn shortly. It pops up very fast.  So I need to retrain them not to crawl under the fences.

You know that feeling when there is too much to fit into your day,  but it just has to be fit in. I have that feeling today.

your slightly frantic friend, celi

  1. That is such a great looking picture of the dandelion walk. Wonderful quality. Enjoy the roof shout. We have a similar thing here. At the end of the work on the roof, flowers are tied to the chimney ( it’s not flowers but a branch of something that I can’t remember) and “on arrose les travaux” with a few glasses:)

  2. Sometimes I like being on the West Coast because, by the time I read your post, you’ve managed somehow and I don’t have to worry about you. It’s a good thought for me. (I know I could worry for Canada in the worry Olympics) Bet that cold beer tasted great. 🙂

  3. It’s a wonder that Blue didn’t trip over his tongue! Enjoy your cool glass of whatever with the guys. We actually have some sunshine today too!!!

  4. A good dog is a tired dog…Blue is growing fast! Hooray for the roof completion! One more step of the project to check off your list. Your celebratory lunch makes my mouth water, including the cold ones. I do so love a party. My husband and sons are away for a few days so the DIL’s and I got together for a nice little party last night. We even had GIRL cake! That’s what we told my 2 year old granddaughter Shelby the chocolate cake with rasberry frosting was called. Yes, please do share your mustard recipe! Do you grow your own mustard and let it go to seed?

    • I have grown my own mustard but this is from a pack chg john bought on a shopping trip in chicago and I brought home by mistake! I will find the origins of the recipe and share it!.. back to work maggie!!

  5. Great news about the roof, Celi! I do hope you find the time to sit and enjoy a cold one with the men. Good idea walking Blue till he drops. As Max grew, the walks got longer until I was the one napping when we got home. That’s when I discovered doggy day care. They ran him ragged all day and when I picked him up at night, he was asleep in the car before I left the parking lot. That night and the next day I had peace. As you said, “Perfect.”
Congrats on the roof and have a good time this afternoon!

    • Now I need to find your recipe for mustard again, with the added links to mandy and celia if my memory serves me correctly, i shall email you! c

  6. Good morning Celi ; iI know that feeling so well that most the time i forget that it;s there. there is only so much that you can do in a day. law of nature takes over from there you just have to prioritize and try to fit in all those extras. yes the roof is done! have a blessed day mike

  7. hi celi! blue is so big! what a wonderful tradition to have a roof shout! it makes me want to put a roof on something! joyce

  8. If that first pix of the dandelion path isn’t story picture perfect, I don’t know what is…just listen and you can hear the children’s book talking….
Enjoy the lovely day – frantic days make nice memories for much much later

  9. The celebration! Like putting the top on the cake! It all sounds divine. Way back when before we had the staking machine…every day the farm wife (me or Mom or …) would cook a HUGE dinner to feed the crew of hay stackers. Huge dinners complete with homemade lemonade and jugs of iced tea and an afternoon of dishes to be washed. Washing the dishes was so boring, but being out in the broiling sun, loading and staking hay just as grueling…so it all evened out.

Have a lovely Roof Shout…I’m sure it will perfect.

  10. Our weather is much much nicer now, and the foliage is in full bloom. The weather man is predicting nice weather for our first ‘summer’ long weekend (Monday is Victoria Day and a Statutory Holiday). And it’s also our 27th Wedding Anniversary! Yes indeed, I was a child bride. Hope you have a wonderful weekend. We’re heading up north to our cottage so I’m not sure how much blogging I will be doing.
That is one of the reasons I’m thinking about getting a dog (many reasons, really) but it’s the forced walk every day.
