Rainbow at the end of the Farmy

The Big Dog still rules the verandah with a firm hand.

While the peahens still sneak about avoiding their motherly duties.

Thank you for all your excellent ideas for hatching the eggs safely. Giraffe has her own little private run now. Shortly after I took the shot below I threw some grain into her run and she came out for a quick nibble then tottered back into her nest and arranged herself back onto her large peacock  eggs. She looks for all the world like a overdressed big bottomed maiden aunt sitting into an overstuffed parlour chair. She plumps the cushions slightly, allowing her rigid back to relax little by little. Not wanting to be seen to give in to the comfort but oh, oh, oh as each little kink in her tired back connects  with the downy stuffing in the chair.  She wriggles slightly to settle the eggs, fluffing and smoothing the feathers of her dusty golden gown. Then wriggles carefully again drawing the eggs under the folds of her skirts just so.  She  tucks around the hem with her beak using quick practiced movements until the drape of her only best dress covers her egg slippers to her satisfaction, and no petticoat can be seen. Then her ritual complete, she goes very still and prepares to watch the parlour and possibly take notes to be gossiped about later in the powder room.

And now for a little jump into the wild wild west and True Grit.

The Breeder brought me back a flyer for Queenie’s Boy in a Straw, he can stay there too as I do not want to meet him in the flesh.  He looks HUGE!   I am fairly sure that Queenie would run for her life at the sight of him. Or maybe not. We are training her to come into a stall for her visit with the lady vet on Sunday. When Daisy goes into this stall she just backs out when she is done. Queenie has decided that when she exits the stall she has to fold herself in half like a well read letter so she can post herself out face forward.  She does not reverse. No thank you.

A rainbow. Does this mean the rain is over for the meantime?

Good morning.  I think the electrician may come today so there will be no electricity for the whole day. But I am not sure. He has not called. However I shall go out and do the milking early just in case. And when the power comes back on I shall pop into the Comments Lounge to say Hullo.  You can start without me, I don’t mind, you know where everything is.

You all have a lovely day.

your friend, celi

  1. We do indeed know where everything is, we feel very at home here! I love the way hens settle on the eggs and then sit, and wait, and sit and wait. So peaceful!

  2. I love your description of Giraffe settling down on her foster eggs – just so beautifully written C.
Hope you get all the electricity bits out of the way before it gets switched off for the day.
    Have a super weekend.
    🙂 Mandy xo

  3. I think that you have sent your rain over here to Bulgaria..it has been tipping down with thunder and lightening..all yesterday evening and this morning. We even had a hailstone storm Now however the rain has gone and the sun is out..so good cheer dear friend..hope that the electric is not off for too long

  4. True Grit comes with impressive credentials … is it just me or does he look very square around the tail end? Hey I don’t know much about cattle. Hope Queenie doesn’t decide to reverse at the critical point on Sunday 🙂 Love the rainbow over the Farmy … you can send the rain our way once you have finished with it. Laura

  5. well; Good morning Celi ;i see your not under water yet , i thought for sure that you were going to get more heavy rain . that is one fine looking bull. I would like to have a few straws of him laying around for my cow.. that was a great idea for the run we have one of those cages but it has a hen and week old chicks in it now. have a blessed day mike

  6. That old hen is so dear sitting on someone else’s eggs (not sure I would offer my services)…will she be shocked when a baby peacock comes out? Will the baby birdie be shocked? Won’t the imprinting go all wonky? But if it does, I guess it doesn’t really matter does it…it takes a village to raise an egg. What else? Oh that BULL. Good God, I’d run for the hills if I were a cow too…those dangly bits are impressive…but he does have extremely nice short legs, and I might find myself peeking at them from a distance. Shyly. Best of luck with the straw…You gotta love a cow that wants to see where she’s going. Smart girl. xx

  7. I’m not sure about your forecast – it sure is windy. Here that would mean weather’s on its way, but perhaps in most places it means it’s blowing itself out? Lets hope so. Good to see the water’s going down and the pasture seems to be thickening up. True Grit sure has stumpy legs – really, he’s one solid looking fellow. Loved your description of Giraffe’s nesting manoeuvres – I’d moved right out of her nesting box and into Aunt Maude’s parlour.

  8. “Somewhere over the rainbow skies are blue. And the dreams that your dare to dream really do come true.” Now I’ll just put on my ruby slippers and skip over to The Farmy. Beautiful photograph – it epitomizes The Farmy.

  9. What a dear sweet sounding little hen is Giraffe. You paint the picture of her perfectly with your words. How long do hens live? I have no idea of the lifespan of one. Love seeing the sweet kittens and am SO glad Queenie and True Grit don’t have to meet in person. Happy Friday!

  10. wow…that is one big cow! it is so cute how she sits on the eggs. gorgeous rainbow! no rain here….just me and the hose!
