Rainbow at the end of the Farmy

The Big Dog still rules the verandah with a firm hand.

While the peahens still sneak about avoiding their motherly duties.

Thank you for all your excellent ideas for hatching the eggs safely. Giraffe has her own little private run now. Shortly after I took the shot below I threw some grain into her run and she came out for a quick nibble then tottered back into her nest and arranged herself back onto her large peacock  eggs. She looks for all the world like a overdressed big bottomed maiden aunt sitting into an overstuffed parlour chair. She plumps the cushions slightly, allowing her rigid back to relax little by little. Not wanting to be seen to give in to the comfort but oh, oh, oh as each little kink in her tired back connects  with the downy stuffing in the chair.  She wriggles slightly to settle the eggs, fluffing and smoothing the feathers of her dusty golden gown. Then wriggles carefully again drawing the eggs under the folds of her skirts just so.  She  tucks around the hem with her beak using quick practiced movements until the drape of her only best dress covers her egg slippers to her satisfaction, and no petticoat can be seen. Then her ritual complete, she goes very still and prepares to watch the parlour and possibly take notes to be gossiped about later in the powder room.

And now for a little jump into the wild wild west and True Grit.

The Breeder brought me back a flyer for Queenie’s Boy in a Straw, he can stay there too as I do not want to meet him in the flesh.  He looks HUGE!   I am fairly sure that Queenie would run for her life at the sight of him. Or maybe not. We are training her to come into a stall for her visit with the lady vet on Sunday. When Daisy goes into this stall she just backs out when she is done. Queenie has decided that when she exits the stall she has to fold herself in half like a well read letter so she can post herself out face forward.  She does not reverse. No thank you.

A rainbow. Does this mean the rain is over for the meantime?

Good morning.  I think the electrician may come today so there will be no electricity for the whole day. But I am not sure. He has not called. However I shall go out and do the milking early just in case. And when the power comes back on I shall pop into the Comments Lounge to say Hullo.  You can start without me, I don’t mind, you know where everything is.

You all have a lovely day.

  1. Hot and Humid here. We could do with some rain now as I am having to water things! Found some old net curtains in a draw so have draped them over my salaad garden to give it some shade don’t want things to bolt in this heat!
Have you thought of writing a book about your Farmy? You have such a wonderful way with words, I for one would buy it!

  2. Whoa! That’s a big boy! There is a farmer in OXON who rents some of the fields along the Thames walk. He grazes his bulls in one of the fields and many people have to walk along the path, and sometimes right thru the herd of bulls. They are very unnerving to walk by. I always try to break off a branch to carry with me, detour them by jumping over the fence further up the field and wading my way thru the grass or waiting for some company. If they come at me then I figure the worst case scenario is I can always jump in the river and swim around them…lol. Hope you are having a lovely day my rainbow friend. 🙂

  3. great rainbow!
Your description of the hen is hysterical. Starting with “She looks for all the world like a overdressed big bottomed maiden aunt sitting into an overstuffed parlour chair….” The whole paragraph so accurate and perfectly done.
The bull looks quite handsome and solid. Nice choice…sure she doesn’t want a celebrity’s poster on her wall?
Funny how some animals do not back up. We are trying to teach Molly – a dog that doesn’t back up! Big dog will laugh – (he’s so handsome, too.)
Love the chickens in the audience picture – you couldn’t have posed them better.
    Hope your weekend is perfect

  4. That’s outrageous to make people have to walk through a field of bulls!
And ditto what everyone else had to say about the bull and rainbow and Author and little Lulu and best of all sweet Granny Giraffe. I too wonder what makes her “old”.

  5. “those dangly bits” Ha! that gave me a laugh!! And of course, we all had to go back and take another peek! 🙂 I would frame that photo of the rainbow over the farmy and hang it for all to see! Gorgeous! We may have to call Giraffe’s hatchlings…..Chick Peas! 🙂
    Ahh, big dog!!

      • I didn’t notice the dangly bits, but upon a second glance, well………I’m sure my cow Mabel would like a wee straw next year, it would be a bit hard to visit in person (or should I say bovine) from NZ

  6. Were you laying on the front porch to get that picture of Big Dog? 🙂 He’s a handsome boy. Loved your hen description as all of us did. Now that I know what is happening on the Farmy, I guess I should get on with my day. Many hugs.

  7. Your description of Giraffe taking care of the eggs made me smile, you described it so well.
That’s a beaut shot of the rainbow over the farmy!

  8. Laughing all the way on this first day of winter here! From the fluffing hen fostermothering so carefully to THAT bull: don’t know what Queenie would feel if he actually came to court her . . . I know I would be out of that paddock as fast as legs would carry!! Lovely to have picture of a happier Author of hopefully a short memory!! And may that rainbow make a few wishes come true . . . [playing Judy Garland for you . . . ]

  9. What a lovely description of an expert hatcher – and oh your bull. He is some bull. I have a special place in my heart for magnificent bulls, and he is something !!! kinky i know …!.
