The Hills are Alive

I don’t think it is the mountains intention to make us feel small.

The mountain just sits within his height and watches.

I think it is us little humans who see our smallness …

reflected in a mountains unrelenting gaze. A reminder for us. To nod our woolly heads and say thank you to the mountain for standing so still as we strut and wriggle and gnaw at his gnarled and horny hard-won toes.

Good morning. I hope to be going horse riding today with the boys and their girls. It has been years and years since I put my seat on a horse.

I shall try to remember to give my camera to a son so you can catch a glimpse of the spectacle.

Have a lovely day.

  1. cor..me thinks that your bottom may be a bit sore when you have finished your ride. I love the photos…sometimes blacl/white can be more effective than colour..Have a great day sweetie

  2. Glad to read your post today – not having the best of times. Lost a chicken to old age at the weekend, had her 6 years, so was a ‘friend’. Worse I found my 2 year old cat dead on my drive this morning as I rushed out to do pet sitting. Keisha was a beautiful cat, inside and out and my heart hurts at her passing. I am sure I will bounce back but at the moment I am going through the WTF is it all for as death, pain, hurt, anger seems to be so prevalent in this world today!

    • Oh no Lyn, how miserable. Two old friends in one day. That will surely make you feel rotton. I hope you get time sometime today to sit down with this new knowledge and make some sense of it. Getting used to loss is so hard. I am so sorry.. c

  3. Sometimes I think it’s a pity that we don’t view the best scenery in black and white. It’s vivid and thoroughly alive.

  4. Magnificent photos… now I like the idea that you give son the camera so we can see you on the horses… if anything like me it will be with a very panicky look on my face…

  5. Making us feel small is doing what a mountain’s gotta do.
I so envy you having a ride in that scenery. Hope you get a mount that allows you to see it instead of needing to apply all attention to staying aboard!

    • I am sure they are all exhausted old hacks, usually these poor old horses are happy to plod, which will suit me as i want to take photos! c

  6. Best word picture of mountains ever. (Horses and mountains? Now I’m really jealous. Soak it all in – you deserve it! …besides, we know you’ll share….next we’ll all chip in for one of those GoPro video cameras you can mount on your hat?)

  7. Wow C. that first shot is magnificent! You have fun being a cowgirl today! I am leaving tomorrow for Canada myself…B.C. and will be out of internet range for a week, so I won’t be able to see what you’re up to for the rest of your trip until I return…
    Until then………..Happy Trails!!

    • have a great time on the other side of the border, no internet for a week must be an interesting experience!! look forward to seeing you again when you return! c

  8. Looking forward to the horseback ride. Stay in the saddle, please. Gorgeous mountain pix. I have never seen the mountains. But your comment about feeling small is how I also feel about the prairie. Small in comparison to the wide sky and wide land.

    • Why have you never seen the mountains, in NZ we can almost always see a mountain and so I had to read that sentence more than once until it made sense. You love road trips so i am sure you will get up into the mountains one day.. hope your garden is growing well.. c
