I took a bite of an apple to see if it was ready to be picked.. not quite but still very tasty, crisp and warm from the sun. But that is not the good news.
I took all these shots yesterday before I even got the news.
The Duke of Kupa probably knew before us. He is clever that way. Here’s the news.. Tah Dah!! Drum roll!!
Daisy and Queenie are BOTH pregnant.. Isn’t that the Most Excellent News.
What do you think about that Queenie?
The average cow is pregnant 283 days. Just over nine months. They were both bred in June.
So I think Daisy is due March 14th, 2014. and Queenie is due April 4th, 2014.
I am just thrilled to bits. Now we can start next years planning.
I shall pick extra long corn stalks for our two expecting mothers this morning.

Lovely vegetable basket.
I bet you’re looking forward to some chilly calving in March. Let’s hope for a mild winter….does such a thing exist on the prairies? Love the shot of the tomatoes and aubergines in the basket.
By March the worst of the deep cold will have broken, though there will still be rain or snow and yes it will be cold. But it is preferable to calve or lamb when it is still a bit cold, the risk of infection is much lower. The flies out here are just awful. Mama did much better last year lambing in the cold. c

Fantastic news! Honey still hasn’t been bred. I think we may have to dry her up but I need a couple of goats or something! 😀 We’re starting to get tomatoes and onions and okra and a little corn. Yesterday we canned apples and applesauce. Dehydrating apples today and making peach peel jelly and canning peaches! Such a busy time of year. And it feels too much like fall already. I know a lady who always breeds her milk cow to a small beef breed evidently she has a local bull so it is easier. Apples are such a good fruit to have on the farm. I am glad to hear that you have fruit trees. I am sure that summer is coming back! I must sow my lettuce! c
And radishes and peas! I did get more green beans, beets and carrots in and we’re digging LOTS of potatoes-over 300# so far.
WOW… tremendous, i need to get in and dig some more of my potatoes too! We don;t have that many though.. c

Queenie is a Hereford, a beef cow, so she is being bred for meat. Unless of course she throws a heifer and Daisy a steer. Then we will keep the heifer. Lots of options. Early days yet.. c
