Periscope Pig

Sheila lives in the Corridor Paddock and sleeps in the Sun Room of the barn. But when she lays down she makes sure that her snout is poking through the gate that leads  to the corridor in the barn.  Like a short stout periscope. Her nose is always sure to get a wee scratch as I move to and fro. It is as though she watches and tastes life through her nose.

Charlotte flatly refuses to come down to the barn (I tricked her in once when it rained and she proceeded to bash her way back out) and remains in the Rat House Paddock.  She will let me in to clean her bowls but gets upset if I let the dogs follow me in. So we just leave her be down there until it is time for her to leave. As long as it is quiet she is quiet and the fights through the fence are not as frequent but still daily.

It looks like this little piglet has his eyes closed smelling the flowers.

I am developing a whole new set of muscles dragging the Chicken Ark across the fields. I shift them three times a day and they are voracious when they eat their grass, they pick out the alfalfa and clover first and even manage a few dust baths . We spent a lot of time watching them yesterday, they have a shady cool run and every single one is healthy and active.

The clean up crew is out!!

Good morning! I slept in until 6.15 this morning (horrors) so I am off out to see to my animals before they start to call out to me.  A short post. Today has dawned clear, so I hope it stays this way and the hay dries.  Though the powers that be at the weather station have taken out the threat of rain today, thunderstorms are still forecast for tomorrow. We hope to bale tomorrow. So lets hope the storms avoid us for the day.  They would if there was no hay laid out to dry.

Have a lovely day. I had better hit the ground running. I will be feeding everyone  in my nightie this morning!

Love, your friend on the farm, celi

  1. Magic thoughts flying toward you for dry and drying weather with just the right amount of dew to bale your hay. Terry is pulling beans as I type and will cut the last field of alfalfa either today or tomorrow depending on time. Our trip was nice but I’m very glad to be home. Cross your fingers for us as we need drying weather for at least two or more weeks.!!!

    • Two weeks! I will be keeping my fingers crossed for you for sure, I will have your rain, the crops around here are still green. I just need one and a half more days.. Tonight I will turn it. yikes.. c

  2. I think the dark mornings are messing me up too. Although not sleeping in that late (6:15 good heavens girl most of the day is nearly gone!) it is taking me longer to get going. It doesn’t help that can’t take the dogs to the park for their daily walk and run until around 6:15am as it is too dark. Although I have a couple of times walked around with a flash light and just thrown the ball, knowing Shelly will always find it!
Everything is looking good on the farm, and glad that things are settling down for the autumn/winter routine. Whilst I am not over keen on the winter, it does force me to take a break and reassess all the things I did through the year, and plan the next one. My farther always said “Gardeners believe in the future” which is so true!

    • Your father was absolutely right, I was thinking that as I pruned the last of the grape vines and hauled them over for the cows to eat. We have an iffy set this year, but next year might be better! c

  3. This is one, nosy post, Celi. If you look at it, all but the last photo feature snouts, beaks, and noses. The piglet taking time to smell the flowers, eyes closed no less, is my favorite. Very nice capture. I’m glad you slept in a bit. You most definitely needed it. I hope you can so the same tomorrow. 🙂 Have a great day!

  4. I love the pig periscope but wonder what happened to ViV? I read every comment every day and don’t know how I could have missed this.

    • Viv hurt her back with all that shifting house and was in hospital while they tried to figure it out, she is back home now though. This is why we have not seen her in the comments lounge lately, with her patchwork and cup of tea! c

  5. Wondering if you’ve read Michael Pollan’s “The Omnivore’s Dilemma.” There are some very interesting chapters in the middle of the book about a place called Polyface Farms. The owners have taken farming with nature instead of against it in a very efficient and friendly direction.

  6. Ms Celi ~ as we mentioned last nite – a glass of wine for you and me, a beer for Sheila and I think Ms Charlotte needs a few martinis!! She should be happy she’s a single gal and not having to nurse 10 piggies!! Or maybe she’s jealous of Ms Sheila’s few nites with a boyfriend!

  7. That is a priceless, periscope pig photo if I have ever seen one…which btw, I have not! PPP photo! Really that is one worth a frame! I haven’t been able to comment lately…have been away to apple orchard country in north, central washington…where most of the world’s apples are grown…well mostly, most of them…but anyway…grapes have taken over alot of orchard land and they net the vines…would that be something you could do with yours, in case the birds get wise to the bobble heads? I do love the looks of them alot more than netting though! 🙂 Brilliant idea! And they look so cool perched up high above the wine!!
