The View from the Coupe and the View from the Loft

Dinner is served every night at this table in the Coupe. We have come in from the covered verandah, it is a mite chilly in the evenings now. Our view is all corn.

The  broiler chickens are nearing the end of their time here. I am pleased to report that they have grown slowly and surely on pasture. No leg problems. No obesity. Anytime the dogs come near, the chickens crowd over to see if they are edible. Only fair really.

They take about two and a half hours a day to manage with the constant shifting, though I have developed lovely arm muscles slinging the concrete blocks on and off   the tarp four times a day.  Next year I am going to design something more user friendly. Though this one is a very good size. This last shot is the ark all tucked up for the night with my strange assortment of make- shift walls, to keep out the cool breezes of the night.  I am a draft worrier.  Not a DAFT worrier, a DRAFT worrier.

The Duke of Kupa.

Do you want to see the view from the loft in the house?  I took out the ceiling in the lounge room a couple of years ago and turned the attic into a big open loft with rooms at either end. But the view is all corn and more corn sounding like the wash of the receding tide on a stony beach.

Let’s walk back through the yards on our way to the house.

Then through the little half door into  and out of the barn.

Tui and Pania.

And here we are gumboots off and at the windows of the loft in the top of  the house, up the ladder to the loft which I am cleaning and setting up for my winter studio (it is right above the wood stove).

The North view (through a screen) . Sorry.

All corn. That is Queenie sat in the middle of the Dairy Mistress field.  Hay  Makers Field – screen right. Daisy’s Field – screen left.

And now out to the South. Oh  MY! More Corn.  For miles and miles and miles.back-where-you-belong-013No screen on this window, it was blown off in a big storm last winter and as no-one noticed but me, I am not replacing it. This is the view from my winter studio. So we will be seeing more of this view. Once I get everything set back up.

Good morning. Today I start picking the apples for the apple cider crush on Saturday.  First we will be going down the road to raid their tree. They have a lovely old barn. I will show you.

Have a lovely day.

Your friend on the farm, celi

  1. Lovely photos. Thanks for that. Always fun to see the farmy in wide-view. Our Cox apples are ready. More applesauce in my future, although some apple crumble with some frozen blackberries might edge in there, too. Happy Tuesday, c! (p.s. Plasterers are here today; lots of skimming going on)

  2. An apple cider crush sounds exciting. I think that first view is beautiful. I remember in Mauritania everyone called the desert the “sea of sand.” It looks like you are living in a sea of corn!

  3. Those Hoekoes have really grown well.. maybe you need to workout one of those mechanical movers like they use for caravans… or even put wheels on it that you can raise and lower and then just push…
I love your views from the coupe and from both sides of the loft… love fields of Mielies or corn as you call them…

  4. I like the Coupe view. Pleasant view for a meal. Love the clouds you can see there. We have clouds, but don’t see them as well because we have hills and lots of trees in GA. Beautiful chicks.

  5. Good morning Celi! Just wondering if you feed the chickens in the Ark anything besides what they find in the fields as you move them? xo

    • Just feed them what you normally feed chickens but with a higher protein level. Lean chickens lay well, you want fat chickens, mine have been grown slowly as I added more wheat germ and oats to their feed. But now they are on corn and grass. Don’t forget the grit too and I always add some DE to their feed and AC vinegar to their water. c

  6. OH, I love the corn photos. I have been through Iowa once = on I-35 = passing through on the way to Minneapolis during July. The images of rolling green fields of corn show up in my dreams very regularly. Thank you for sharing your life with all of us.

  7. The Duke does look very regal! I love the table in the coupe and glasses pen and paper look very inviting. Are the salt and pepper shakers to add spice to your writing? Hahaha just could not resist and you don’t need it but their placement begs a comment. Have a wonderful day Miss C!

    • We carry our plates out there for dinner so the S&P is for dinner! Though I think my writing does need some spicing up lately, it sounds tired.. c

  8. You views certainly do have the look of the crisp fall air about them. I’m living the table you have dinner at every night, it must be lovely to sit and watch nature happen. Apply picking sounds like fun!

  9. Big Yawn! I got up late this morning! Just had some gf toast with my homemade strawberry jam from 2012! Delicious! Tree guy is here this morning. Have some trees behind the grain bins that need to be cut back. And behind our spa house. Yes Celi! Little Autumn Blaze maple trees popping up all over the place! Yikes! LOL They’re fast!!!!
My rosemary is cut and drying! My garage smells so nice! 😀 Sage too! Mmmmm….I make my own poultry seasoning! Yum!
I see some plump juicy chickens in your freezer’s future! I love chicken! Especially fresh free range. Nothing like the jelly from them for broths, soups, and gravies!
The sun is peaking over the horizon and it is supposed to be much warmer today…70s….yay!
I hate to get up when it is dark outside and then dark once again (way too early in the day) when I could be outdoors enjoying the warm sunshine. My whole system gets messed up. November 3rd we can set the clocks back and that will somewhat normalize things for a while. Where we are situated…we get up with the sun and the sun is up til around 10 pm (it never gets really dark). Then in the winter? Dark as can be upon rising and at around 4pm it starts getting dark again. Interesting!
You must be in a much warmer part of the country because my winter shop is my kitchen!!!! LOL
Where it is nice and warm and cozy! What is this coupe? And are gum boots the same as my Wellies?
The Duke of Kupa is majestic! Your highness!!! Gorgeous feathers !!! 🙂
I meant to tell you…the photo of his feathers was very beautiful! A great shot! And I am in love with that incredible antique lamp in your first photo here! Nice table too! But oh that lamp!!! Something I would be looking for! It is lovely!
Well, I got the jellies done yesterday! More Elderberry and some Elderberry Apple Jelly too! My friend Karen’s recipe from Lavender and Lovage. She makes the most wonderful jellies, jams, preserves, marmalades and chutneys!
Today I make whipped cream rosettes to freeze for gracing hot chocolate, pumpkin pie, Irish Coffee, and custards with!!!! I use one of my pastry bags and one of my very large tips and squeeze the stars out on a cookie sheet covered in wax paper or white parchment paper. Then put in the freezer and when frozen pop in a freezer container for later use! Mmmmm….I saw this on one of my fb friend’s posts and thought it was a stupendous idea!!! So today I will be doing this! LOL
Idleness is the devils workshop as my mother used to say! 😉
Well, as soon as the tree man leaves Kevin will be working up the fields and maybe this afternoon will be able to do the beans! Hopefully! I will only have to unload a few trucks today! Then tomorrow we will pick up speed! Sure will be nice to get them all in the bins!
Have a great day everyone! Oh yeah! Got three more buckets of wine working and on Friday we are supposed to get rain so will strain and get ready to put in the carboys! Busy busy!
Have fun with the apple crush! I love to pick apples! We all get together and it is quite a lot of fun! Took out some of our cider from last year…which we like to add a shot of Butterscotch Schnapps to! Yum! Tonight by the fire!
Take care Ceci! Good to see you this morning! 😀
