Vegetable garden gone. Frost. Blink. Frost. Gone.

Daily sweetness.  Marmalade Cat (to be – still Marmalade Kitten really) and Boo-Nanny.  Not enough yet? Let’s have a double wammy.

The Marmalade kitten creeping up on Boo Nanny. The most obvious ambush in the world.

Wee kittys .. um..toilet is becoming more normal so we are going outside three or four times a day now. This time Mean Miss C insisted that the baby should do the stairs without BooNannys help. It is character building.

Marmalade Cat was deeply unimpressed.

And just for the record Egoli is here to tell you that he is doing just fine as well and is the best hunter.. ever. He even leaves dead mice outside the pigs pen!

I have laid my walnuts on the drive, so the cars and trucks can run over them. Thank you for this trick. And I am excited with the results! Stage one! Tick!

The Duke of Kupa checking to see if the coast is clear.

sweetness-077

Not clear.

Meadow. Meadow is a good little sheep.sweetness-096

Tilly is still at the loud squawking tween stage.

Between last night and the night before all the tomatoes are stone cold dead, and the ones in the hoop house are following fast.  Ah well, it was worth a crack, Trev.   But all  the greens in the little make-shift green house  are still going strong.  As is the lettuce.

sweetness-117

Not so the eggplant though. Dead as a door nail.

I am not showing long pics of the big gardens, there is a lot of tidying up to do yet.

I hope you all have a wonderful day. So much day ahead of us!

Love your friend,

celi

  1. We’ve never been able to keep outdoor tomatoes alive past mid-October, so I’d feel very chuffed to achieve your longevity. I roasted a bunch of supermarket past-their-sell-by-date tomatoes last night. Super-cheap and super-delicious. Lovely photos this morning, c.

      • It’s getting those very small nuts out that is so difficult! And time consuming! And add to that the cracking of the very hard walnut shells. I collected buckets full out first year on our farm, found out what a big chore getting to the nuts is, and haven’t done it since. 🙂

  2. Aww, our little Marmalade is getting so strong. Cannot believe how much this little fellow has climbed into my heart! Good thing I read about your walnuts on the drive, I would probably have avoided them – haa haa.
Happy farmy day to you C.
    🙂 Mandy xo

    • I said to my neighbour i need to put up a sign, I wouldn’t worry she said, most everyone does it that way! WHO KNEW! She is thrilled that I am hulling and drying them – she hates waste too. I learn so much here.. c

      • My in-laws always had walnuts. We always drove over them too. We spent many a wintery evenings sitting at their kitchen table visiting, cracking walnuts and digging the meat out of the shell. They are both gone now…so if you need any help let me know! We always had such a good time working together…made for great memories.

  3. I already made one comment then somehow deleted it.
Love your picture of Marmalade and Boo. We don, t hear much about Egolibut he has become a really beautiful cat and deserves a mention…
Sorry about your plants but Jack Frost is a very cunning fellow and comes when least expected. My potted plants got a touch of frost but now they are all on the patio and in a few weeks will come inside… lots of love P

  4. Oh what memories I have of picking out pie plates of walnuts on Saturday mornings as part of my Saturday chores. Ugh. I absolutely hated that job and still am a bit averse to walnuts as a result. Isn’t that just silly?? Keep the Boo and Marmalade pics coming, please!

  5. I love the mountaineering kitten. How do you stop Boo from helping? Sorry about your veggie gtarden. We just planted some bulbs in troughs for the patio nect Spring, and I noticed one or two strawberries in the pot by the garage door. The sun was really hot outside, but it can’t last, and I don’t think those strawberries will ripen.

    • Poor Old Boo was told to go Down and Stay, Maybe you will have strawberries in the spring, nice that you are finally able to explore your new home, slowly.. c

  6. I am laughing so hard!!!! I truly loved these photos!!! I have a huge grin on my face! LOL
I love all the characters! You captured everyone’s personality and thoughts spot on!!!! As I see it! 😀
Sorry about the demise of your eggplants and tomatoes….it is 26 degrees here this morning. I hate to go out and see what my poor lovely petunias and marigolds look like…the last of my colorful gardens. Sigh………………………
I love that “dead as a door nail”! My mom used to say that! Now I say it too! Hee hee!
I love your tweenager Tilly! Hilarious! LOL Meadow is such a lady! 🙂
Working up the fields today and will be for quite a spell. I am winding down with the squash and pumpkins this morning. I love orange…but it is getting a little weary now. 😉
Have a great day Celi! Thank you for the bright cheery start to my day!
    (((hugs))) Mere

  7. Celi I have sent you a document that I found about processing Black Walnuts. I hope it helps! It says to use a vice, so I will need to go buy one!
Frost here too which is fine as my garden is now really only full of winter greens (Kale, Cabbage, Broccoli and Brussels), so they will appreciate the cold.
Reading a great book at the moment “The Omnivore’s Dilemma” by Michael Pollen. The first part is all about corn and the thousands of acres that now are dedicated to this. I have learned a lot from it so far (only a third through) and can appreciate what you go through being surrounded by the stuff!!

  8. No frost yet, but coming by the weekend. I stripped the last of the tomatoes and peppers yesterday, and now the counter is full, but the garden is empty…For once, I’m not sad to see it finished. Just TOO busy with other things this year…
Love today’s photos – that little guy is a trooper!

  9. So pleased Egoli’s eyes have stayed that marvellous amber colour. Perhaps BooNanny will allow Egoli to pass on some hunting tricks when Marmalade Kitty is a little bigger 🙂 Guess you will be tucking into all the deliciousness that you canned/put up fairly soon. Laura

  10. There is nothing as fun as a kitten, for sure! I must admit that I am not very sad (well, maybe just a little) to see the gardens go. All that abundance so suddenly gone it is almost shocking. We have protected a few rows of greens under hoops and cloth and have gathered in and canned and frozen all the produce we were able to. Today I am putting up jars of sliced jalapenos. The large hoophouse is still producing a few tomatoes. Soon we will clean it out and move it over the spinach and carrots planted in front of it. Now we are bringing up the wood to get the woodstove cranking soon. All part of the rhythm of the seasons. We don’t have all the animals that you do, so although I too have a clown suit, I only use it to shovel snow off the greenhouses and for snowshoeing in the woods. Soon I will get to stay inside while it’s snowing and make jewelry! Yay! You will certainly enjoy those nuts this winter in all your baked goods. We used to gather hickory nuts with our Aunt Thelma. They have a similar looking thick green casing which eventually dries up Turns black and falls off on it’s own. I loved cracking them and the flavor of those Nuts all winter. A really good childhood memory.

    • Hello maggiemehaffey! I have thought about getting snowshoes! I cross country ski! Until the temps drop. I almost didn’t make it back home one day. I kept thinking about my dad skiing down those black diamonds until he was in his mid 80s and it kept me going! Now I am much more careful and try not to let my mind wander with the beauty of it all! I get lost when I am doing something I love!!! AND I am bone weary working with all these pumpkins!!! Ahhhhhh….LOL Today is the last day for them! What kind of snowshoes do you have or recommend if you read this post?
      Mere 🙂
